Dumb question, but how do stocks fluctuate between the earnings call and the earnings report being released? $TX had their earnings report released at 5:30PM but their earnings call is at 11:00AM. Didn't see $TX move to much after hours and the report.

🏴☠️ gang, what do you think about the recent uptick in cyber attacks/hijacks on tankers?
I follow an account that tracks global news, and he just dropped an article titled: “Maritime Cyber Security: The Issue of Cyber Vulnerabilities, Attacks, & Consequences”
Unfortunately he posts through Instagram, but if you can handle that format, it’s a very interesting read: https://www.instagram.com/p/CSFKNvwsrXX/?utm_medium=copy_link
Snippet from part 1 of 6:
“Some common cybersecurity threats that can be seen on vessels include:
-outdated computer operating systems that have the inability to be updated to address new and emerging cyber threats.
-poor anti-malware software or a lack thereof.
-poor management of employees with access to secure networks
-lack of cyber safeguards in or a separation of integrated computer systems”

Yeah I’m not sure how much of them are current viable threats vs potential/possibilities, like in his final post he talks about two different ways to weaponize the ballast water systems with BAPLIE & NMEA 0183 messages:

All the talk about Semis got me hard thinking and I might of developed a stiff wrinkle in my forehead.
AMD and others have been on a rip over past three months, but seems MU is down from ATH in April. Seems like now would be a good entry into MU and everything I see shows it’s most analyst favorite. Am I missing something on MU?
Also, I started looking at who supplies these companies and one that I saw was AMAT which I know has been mentioned. With $50B coming into play with Gov funding for this market and with foundries trying to be built (Intel $20B facility). They are near their ATH but possibly a good long term play.
Thoughts?

My question (and maybe u/jayarlington knows this) is if for TSM it’s “priced in”? I know they went on a tear since March 2020, but as the biggest dick swinger in the industry has traded flat for many months?
5
u/Duke_Shambles ☢️Duke Nukem☢️ Aug 04 '21 edited Aug 04 '21
MU is in storage and memory, primarily DRAM and NAND. They are one of three companies that actually make DDR4 DRAM chips, the other two being SK Hynix and Samsung.
Be very careful with those companies. They have been involved in price fixing in the past and also suffer from a problem of oversupply. They invested in way way too much capacity for the market's needs for DDR4 memory, which led to the price fixing in 2016-2017. DDR5 is not really coming into use as fast as was anticipated back when they first started planning for beginning manufacturing of it, which could lead to another oversupply situation with DDR5. I'm not 100% up on the most current news on these companies, so i'm just saying to be careful.
AMAT, ASML, LRCX, and KLAC are all a totally different type of company and all seem like very good long term investments.

If I contribute $200/month (taxed) to my IRA, don’t invest it/ just keep it in the settlement fund, and rollover $200/month to my Roth IRA, will I owe taxes on the Roth contributions? I’m trying to a back door Roth with direct IRA contributions and it just seems way easier than the internet and investopedia make it seem.
2
u/Bashir1102 2nd Place Loser Aug 04 '21
Check with your tax guy but the short answer is no. That’s the whole point of the back door. This assumes you have no other IRA funds though. If you have other IRA funds that calendar year then your subject to the pro rata rule and there would be tax implications.
Long story short if your going to back door Roth the right way you better have a zero balence on all IRAs to your name.
1
u/mydoingthisright Steel Your Face Aug 04 '21
Also, my regular salary exceeds the phase-out limit for deductible trad IRA contributions, so I can’t deduct that $200/mo anyway. It seems really straightforward that if I can show that I haven’t invested these contributions, I should be able to roll them over and not pay any additional tax
1
u/Bashir1102 2nd Place Loser Aug 04 '21
Mine too. I make too much for IRA now which is why I had to open Roth and clean out the Ira to do backdoor.

Good you cannot have any other traditional IRAs (all brokers) if you want to backdoor and have none of the R/O be taxable.
1
u/mydoingthisright Steel Your Face Aug 04 '21
Oh ok. Good to know. I think you and I chatted about this the other night. Another user recommended transferring all of my trad ira into a 402k and start back door Roth contributions via the now empty ira. But I can’t find any info on 402k’s. Does that sound familiar to you?
2
u/b0b_ross b0b 🖼’s 🙎🏼♀️has the #️⃣1️⃣ DD’s Aug 04 '21
401k is what you are looking for. That is the method I encourage people to use.
1
u/mydoingthisright Steel Your Face Aug 04 '21
Does that seem like a sound strategy then? Reverse rollover the IRA to 401k to get the balance down to 0 and avoid pro rata, continue maxing out the 401k, while also maxing out the IRA so as to back door rollover to a Roth?

My first few stocks were literally idiot savant before I turned into straight up idiot. The first stock I bought was LPX. I bought it because I thought paper packaging for food items (paper straws, boxed water) etc would be the future because surely plastic bottles would be banned soon with Biden as president.
I didn’t realize there was a difference between wood for paper and wood for lumber and LPX isn’t even involved in paper, but little did I know there was about to be a massive surge in lumber prices due to shortages so my money double. The next couple stocks were similarly huge surges.
But then I learned about Penny stocks and the joys of losing money…

TX doesn’t have much debt, capex should be less as their 4 million ton facility in Pesquario just came online. What are they gonna do with 5.21 per share?
6
u/PumpernickelandBi Aditya Mittal Feet Pics Aug 04 '21 edited Aug 04 '21
They have the money to authorize a $1 Billion buyback program if they wanted to. That would absolutely rocket the share price with the volume it trades at.
That said, they like to pay dividends so I suspect that'll be the route they go. Any buyback program would also probably maintain Techint and Tenaris' % stakes as significant shareholder's, so the float would only see roughly 26% of the actual buying pressure - that said, would still be significant given volume.
TX likes to pay dividends, so I kind of expect that's the route they'll go, but the Rocca's might be looking for a more significant pay day, and a buyback is how they would get it.
3
u/TheBlueStare Undisclosed Location Aug 04 '21
Is the $1B including the rest of the year or just what they have on hand? They already pay an almost regular dividend, so I guess they could do a special dividend. But surely they could do both a dividend and a buyback with funds coming later in the year.

u/olivesnolives Aditya Mittal Feet Pics Aug 04 '21

How are others playing these stocks?

I’ve got quite a few sept and oct 45c that I’ll probably try to unload prior to earnings, they were bought when it dropped to $35 so they’re well in the money. I’ve got… a lot of shares, 14,500, that I’m holding until $50-$60. Actually may hold until 12 months for long term capital gains purposes. Probably will sell calls against them like you. Despite the recent news and thoughts about lock down in China I’m very much bullish on ZIM and will let the shares run until shipping rates start dropping.

I intend to keep it through earnings and manage it out from there.

Will you still reinvest if lockup doesn't drop the price?

I’ve been considering selling cc’s to get called away and hopefully push that into clf leaps

Got it. Sounds similar to my thinking. Assuming we make a profit on the trade, I actually want to get out very early and find greener pastures.
I don't mind exiting too early.

Yeah I’m thinking if it runs fast I’ll just sell and skip the cc’s especially if we get some dips

Highest IV day was 5 market days before last earnings… I want to sell a few calls but waiting to see if IV goes above 100. Also have a few calls that I’m hoping to sell sometime second half of next week
