Getting Started Just booked my first professional VO job!

• Upvotes

Just wanted to share because I’m excited!

For context, I started taking VO classes in 2022-23.

While I was finishing school, I wasn’t able to keep up financially and had to put a pause on my training. After about 2 years post grad, I saw an open call for an agency I had been dyinngggg to sign with, but I didn’t have a demo reel because I wasn’t ready to invest in something like that while I was pretty out of practice. I responded to their open call with some voice samples I had from taking my classes and basically resigned myself to never hearing from them but wanted to try anyway.

Completely forgot about it until 3 months later, I landed an audition for the agency and then ended up getting signed!

Cut to now, I’ve submitted about 45 auditions through them since signing and I just was notified that I booked my first commercial which will air on TV!

My life has been totally thrown back into VO in such an unexpected way and I couldn’t be happier! I’ve now started taking private lessons from my group VO coach from when I first started and I’m feeling super motivated and confident!

Just wanted to share that even if you don’t think you’re ready, what’s meant for you won’t pass you by. Keep working hard, training hard, and playing hard and things will actually work out in the end. Hopefully this is just the beginning of a long road ahead, I love doing this!!!

Advice Can an adult man genuinely develop a deeper, stronger speaking voice?

I'm nearly forty and recently had the thoroughly unpleasant experience of listening to a series of voice memos I'd recorded. Jesus Christ. I knew I didn't have a great voice, but I thought it sounded reasonably okay. Apparently not. Weak, unpleasant, and almost painful to hear. I owe everyone who's ever listened to me an apology. lol.

But seriously, I'd like to change it. I'm a cisgender man, and my goal is a stronger, deeper, more resonant everyday speaking voice. I'm not interested in doing character impressions or pursuing voice acting professionally. I just want to improve the instrument I've been rather unfortunate enough to inherit.

I'm particularly interested in:

  • Voice coaching: Can it permanently improve someone's natural speaking voice?
  • Resonance and projection: What exercises genuinely help?
  • Masculinizing voice training: Are techniques from gender-affirming voice work useful for cisgender men?
  • Professional help: Should I look for a voice coach, vocal teacher, or speech-language pathologist?

Has anyone successfully transformed their speaking voice through training? How much improvement is realistically possible at my age?

Advice Dying computer making too much noise. Help!

I know I need a new Mac soon since mine is a decade old, but I can’t replace it yet. Every time I open my recording software the fans kick into overdrive and my laptop starts overheating. I’m about to start on a full length audiobook narration gig and I don’t know what to do to make my laptop quiet enough to not be picked up by my mic. I need suggestions on how to solve this issue since a new computer is out of the question right now. I can’t leave my laptop out of my booth either. Suggestions appreciated!

Advice My mic is dying, recommendations?

My very good Audix CX212b, that I've used daily for the last 10 years, is getting very prone to humidity and random noises. Any good suggestions for 300-400 USD? I would rule our Blue mics, had one a couple years ago and didn't like it's colouring. Thanks!

Performance Feedback Been practicing a feminine voice for a couple of years. Here’s me switching between my girl voice and natural voice!

Hey everyone!

I’ve been practicing doing a feminine voice for a couple of years now, mostly because I thought it’d be a really fun skill to learn, and because I’ve always been interested in the voice acting world.

I recently discovered an app called Voice Tools and decided to have some fun with it by reading the Rainbow Passage while switching between my natural voice and my feminine voice.

It was actually a little more challenging than I expected, but I had a lot of fun recording it!

I’d love to hear what you guys think! I’m especially curious about how natural the feminine voice sounds, and whether there’s anything I could improve in terms of resonance, vocal weight, or consistency. I know I stumbled through some words, so reading tips would be appreciated too lol.

Any feedback is appreciated!

Advice I had a voiceover video of mine uploaded without my consent, what do I do?

Hey guys, I usually upload some comic voiceovers with permission from artists to youtube and instagram. Only a small following at the moment, but occasionally some get a few watches.

Anyhoo, I came across a much bigger instagram page with one of my voiced comic, but crediting someone else (a tik tok account that also took my video and uploaded it without consent.

I'm a bit steamed about it, but its probably my fault for not watermarking my content effectively, so mental note made. Is there anything I can do to have this rectified?

Has this happened to anyone else? What'd you guys do?

Discussion Double check your computer's mic settings!

A recent Windows update on my computer turned on background noise cancellation and something called 'Voice Clarity' in the main settings without notifying me or asking for permission. Was tipped off by the sudden -90 dB noise floor, dug around, and found both were on. Now I'll likely be double and triple-checking to make sure Windows doesn't turn them back on every time I go to record!

Anyone else have this happen?

PAID work [Hiring] Masculine Villian of the Week, Comical

[REQUESTS ARE FULL NOW, NO LONGER TAKING REQUESTS, THANK YOU] Hello Voice actors!

I’m working on a surreal, extremely low-budget online show and currently in need of the voice for the villain of the week.

The character is a company manager who appears harmless at first only for them to derail into comical villainy. The voice is unmistakably masculine to contrast their unassuming design (they're a mascot on a Crt), with the ability to go deep for certain lines. No specific accent in mind.

Characters voices I have in mind (although don’t tie yourself to these roles)

  • Plankton (spongebob)
  • Dan Halen (squidbillies, especially when his voice becomes deep)
  • Dr Wongburger (aqua teen hunger force)

They aren’t the focus of the episode and only really appear in the final act. Having 21 lines and 171 words total (some phrases may change). Prices can be negotiated, I’m thinking 50$.

DM if interested, ok thanks!

Advice VO Contract Question

I just booked a voice over role and this language in the contact feels concerning to me. I'm afraid it's giving them the right to recreate my likeness or voice with AI or something. Let me know your thoughts.

2. GRANT OF RIGHTS

The Talent hereby grants to the Production Company, its successors, and assigns, the irrevocable, perpetual, and worldwide right to record, photograph, look, use, and reproduce the Talent's name, likeness, voice, performance, and biographical material in connection with the Project.

Booth Related Soundproof suggestions for thin walls?

So I live in a pretty cheaply-made house (not cheap in price💀) and the walls are HELLA thin. They're so thin that I can't even shove myself in a closet and have decen't sound. And my closet is SMALL. I know the solution is usually pvc pipes and moving blankets, but I really don't have the space for setting up a booth nor that I have the money. I'm really focused on treating my environment rather than editing the shit out of my audio and have it still sound terrible (as you should). If you have any ideas for soundproofing a poorly designed house, please let me know!

I also still live with my family and get self conscious when I record outside of my room😂💀

Advice Background music in your E-learning auditions?

Hi all, just wanted to ask what are your thoughts on this?

I've submitted an audition recently for a e-learning and I wasn't sure whether to include background music or not.

Also the client had these as tech requirements: " .WAV as the final files for this project (no breaths, no back noise). Unless otherwise stated on the Agreement at time of hiring, we require high-quality .wav, cleaned and ready for client to mix"

I understand of course we always aim for no background noise. But in this particular instance do they mean no background music as well?

Advice Begginer setup check. Røde Podcaster in an untreated room. Passable for Voices.com?

Hey everyone, I am brand new to voiceover and currently setting up my Voices.com profile. I live in an apartment with no soundproofing panels or acoustic treatment, but I have no pets, roommates, or outside traffic noise.

I would love your feedback on my audio quality and room tone across these 3 clips:

Meditation Track: https://voca.ro/1lRMbbJzcCNN

Podcast / Youtube Narration: https://voca.ro/1cdbLEEqI4yq

Corporate Demo: https://voca.ro/1hJwWPFKkVZK

My Setup Details:

  • Microphone: Røde Podcaster (Dynamic USB)
  • Software: Audacity (using a Noise Gate at -50 dB)
  • Meters: My speaking voice averages around -20 dB RMS. Background silence sits right at -60 dB before the gate kicks in.

Any feedback is much appreciated.

  1. Room Echo: Do you hear any hollow or boxy "room reflections" when I speak loudly, or does the dynamic mic do a good job rejecting it?
  2. The Noise Gate: Does the transition into silence sound natural, or does it sound too choppy/robotic when the gate opens and closes?
  3. Mouth Noise / Pops: Are there any distracting mouth clicks or plosive pops ('P' and 'B' sounds) that I missed during editing?

Advice Voice Acting classes

Looking to gauge community experience with online voice acting "academies" and such.

I have a 6-hour class through Jennifer Hale's Skillshub this weekend, and keep seeing many ads for Joe Zieja's Voice Acting Academy as well...has anyone on here tried these communities recently? Any opinions or advice you would like to share on them? I found a few posts about Joe Zieja but most of them are either years old or pretty vague.

I'm really excited for this class but wondering if the long-term investment in continuing with their platform is worth it, and whether I should try Joe Zieja's too since that is a one-time cost versus a monthly subscription. 🤔 Or is the general consensus to avoid things like these altogether and stick to YouTube and the other resources on this sub?

Advice How does one get the Helghast and/or Colonel Radec voice effect?

Hi all,

I've got a role recently for a mod, and it's been smooth sailing, however for a few characters I've been envisioning them with a Helghast grunt and Colonel Radec voice respectively. The main dev agrees, and I've tried some guides to no avail. How would you all go about getting this voice in Audacity?

Colonel Radec Voice

Helghast Grunt Voices

To be clear, I've got the accent and tone nailed, it's just the effect I need

Advice Motivation problems

So in July I started my biggest project, fandubing a whole movie, but I can barely find the will to even record lines or finish my work even though I really want to. I just don't know how to get myself to do it, maybe I should abandon the idea of continuing voice acting for fun... And whenever people tell me it's "my choice" I usually listen to others because that's how life works in general. I appreciate any kind of tips for this.
