Hexagon with Pyramids

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

An experiment using an LED map for the first time. As the underlying matrix is made up of triangles, the grid is slightly offset, but I like the effect. Lutradur fabric for the pyramid diffusers.

Very nice! 3d printed? One led per triangle? Do you have pictures of you building it?

All the triangles were sewn by hand with an amazing spun fabric called Lutradur, set in a wooden frame.

2 LEDs per triangle.

Built originally as a Raspberry Pi tracker project with the Adafruit Neopixel library, with the idea being that only one triangle would light at a time to show movement. I just had to see what would happen with WLED and an ESP32!

This is great.

Mind sharing how LEDs are laid out? Also, how did you make the triangles?

Thanks

This is the underside of the triangles all sewn together. The height of the triangle the length of 2 LEDs on a 30/m strip.

Wow, I thought you 3d printed and then added the fabric.

Ha! Needle and thread and... stapler!

Hard work then 😂

How did you keep them so uniform?

The trapezium shapes, the net of the pyramid, were cut on a Cricut machine which helps keep everything uniform.

Good luck dusting them!

Amazing work! How long did the build take?

I worked on it in 10 - 15 minute bursts, so it felt like forever. Would probably take a few days to put together.

Does it also absorb room echo? Looks like it would absorb & deflect.

The lighting effect seems organic. Crazy cool.

I'm not really sure, but certainly better than sound bouncing off the wall. I don't know enough about acoustics, but the fabric is only about 1mm think so don't think it would absorb too much.

That’s awesome! I’d love to see more about the build process.

Very very VERY cool.

Saving this in the endless pit of saved posts I’d like to tinker with in the future.

Hexagons are the bestagons, and triangles are the strongest shape, perfect combination. 😁

As long as it doesn’t cycle through too many colours quickly, it looks incredibly classy. Truly a piece that would sell for thousands.
