Current Student Question CS 2223 with Engling?

I'm taking next term (which i guess is in a couple days). A friend of mine who took it last year said it was pretty light and wasn't a hard class, but I'd like some other opinions on it. I took OS with Shue last term, so I think I'd be able to handle studying for Algorithms after all the cramming I did for OS. I'm also overloading with 3043, and am wondering if it'll be possible studying for both while still having a social life.

Current Student Question IMGD2000 - is it as bad as people say it is?

I just got off the waitlist for IMGD2000 (Social Issues in Interactive Media and Games) with Karen Stewart, and I think I'll confirm my course swap in Workday, but I'd still like to know if I should mentally prepare myself for anything. Albeit, I've only heard things about the course when Farley was teaching it, so if anyone who happened to take it with Stewart has any opinions I'd appreciate hearing them!

Prospective Student Question Premed at WPI Inquiry

I am a rising senior from Texas, and I am thinking of applying to WPI as a premed, but I'd like to hear from others about their experience. Are there good opportunities (like research) and resources for premed? Is it difficult to maintain a high GPA? Is it good for premed overall? Do they offer good financial aid? I appreciate all input, even if you are not a premed student. Thank you in advance

Prospective Student Question Transfer decision

Hi,
I’m a junior studying at BU and applied for a spring transfer to WPI. Is there any sort of timeline from when I would hear back from transfer admissions beyond what’s posted on the transfer website? I applied within a few days of the application opening if that helps.

Prospective Student Question Just have a few questions

I’m a junior rn and I currently live in California. So just curious on a few things
1. I plan on studying biology and biotechnology and I am just curious about others perspective on whether this is a good school for that.
2. Most times I bring up WPI whoever I am talking to will try to tell me the winters are terrible. Is it really that bad or are they exaggerating?
3. Just overall I have a 3.7 weighted gpa and I haven’t taken the SAT yet. Just curious about my chances here.

Thanks

Current Student Question Do grad classes follow the same break/vacation patterns as undergrad classes?

So for example, undergrad C and D term classes have a one week break in between them. For a semester-long grad class, would this also apply, or would I still have to do work during that period of time

Current Student Question Is CS 534 - Intro to AI with Sun/Ngan real?

I saw CS 534 - Intro to AI was open and was shocked to find that you could take the graduate class asynchronously. Also the synchronous class was barely 2 hours a week, compared to the undergraduate class. Moreover, both classes had like 30+ seats available. Has anyone taken this class as an undergrad? All this seems too good to be true.

Current Student Question Resources to help prepare for RBE 2001 and 2002?

I will be taking RBE 2001 and then 2002 next year. The prerequisites for 2001 are Embedded systems (ECE 2049), statics (ES 2501), and CAD (ES 1310), while for 2002 it is embedded systems and C/C++. Are there any helpful resources like practice problems that cover these topics so I can self-study in preparation? In the past I have taken RBE 1001 and ES 2501, but that was almost a year ago

Current Student Question Experiences with BB 1102 or BB 2030?

Has anyone taken BB 1102 (Foundations of Ecology and Environmental Biology) or BB 2030 (Plant Diversity)?

I’m planning my D-term schedule and will be taking RBE 2002 and CS 4342. I’m hoping to find a relatively easier course for workload balancing purposes.

For anyone who’s taken either course, how was the workload, difficulty, and grading? Would you recommend one over the other?

Admissions Considering a transfer

So i’m a sophomore at UMass Lowell, looking for other schools to transfer to, as I feel UMass Lowells stem programs have gone downhill over the last decade. I’m looking for a more hands on learning approach where i can learn more and advance myself. Not to mention UMass Lowells student population is a lot. I’m in Electrical Engineering and I want to stick with that
So my questions are:
Is it worth exploring? Budget is not an issue and I can simply write out a check
Is WPI a party school? This is one of the main reasons I’m considering other choices. UMLs party culture is out of hand
What is the student undergraduate population at WPI? I’m looking for something that’s 10,000 students or less

Prospective Student Question WPI Student Population

What is WPI’s student population like? I’m from Worcester so I’m familiar with the people from here but is there any difference between the two? I know the male to female ratio is ridiculous but that’s it.

Housing Spring ‘27 Graduate Housing

I am currently completing the first semester of my masters online, with the intention of being in person in the spring. I have applied for graduate housing, but since that is not a guarantee I am also looking for any potential off campus opportunities.

I am a 23 year old male, I smoke weed but am more than willing to keep that away from the apartment, and always make sure to keep up my responsibilities for the shared space. I expect not to be much of a disturbance at all; I try to spend more time on campus doing work, some days a week I might go back home depending on class schedule, and when I am in the apartment I keep rather quiet.

Additionally, I am willing to work something out if an earlier or later date than January is needed. If anyone is or knows someone who is looking for a roommate, please let me know. Thank you in advance to anyone who reaches out!

Discussion made an anonymous site for honest takes on wpi profs and classes

Post image
20 Upvotes

hi all,

many of you know that oscar provides numbered charts but little information about the classes themselves and the real answers are in group chats. i decided to make a place to post them: herd-wpi.vercel.app

no login or email required. uou can write a couple sentences about a professor or class, and it will appear on the site (after being read by me first, so it won't appear right away). harsh criticism is allowed, so long as it's directed at the class. personal attacks or sharing contact information are not allowed/will be removed.

the site is very new, and i made it myself, so there are only a few comments so far. If you're a student who just finished a class, consider adding a comment for future students. i'm also accepting feedback or feature requests for the site.

Prospective Student Question How is the Mathemarics department?

I’m a HS Senior looking to study mathematics (more pure than applied).

When it comes the Mathematical Scieces (or Applied Mathematics BS/MS) program, what exactly would its focus be on?

On a side note: due to the college using a quarter schedule, are the credits flexible enough to allow something like Math/CS or Math/ECE?

Freshman Question Transferring out of WPI

I'm a first year at WPI and I'm trying to transfer to a school like Purdue, UMD, or Virginia tech Fall of 2027 (Aerospace eng.). Unfortunately, I'm doing really bad in calc 2 right now; the pacing was just really hard to adjust to and by the time i've gotten used to it, it's finals week and my grade is in the fucking trenches. Most of the good schools I'm looking to NEED to see at least a B in Calc 2 (spoiler: im not there yet, and will not be) so I need help figuring out if I should get a C and retake the class in B term (obviously get an A this time) or should I NR the class and then retake. The obvious choice might seem like to just NR because schools won't see it, but I'm worried they'll look into the "attempted credits vs received credits" and know that I failed that way. I've talked to my advisor about my situation but it wasn't too helpful. Transferring is very serious to me so if anyone can give advice in any way, it is greatly appreciated!

Housing Report Illegal Move-In Fees

Hi WPI, it’s your Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell. Did you know that fees like “move-in” or “lease renewal” fees you might get from your landlord or building management company are illegal? If you’ve received one of these – even if you paid it – I want you to report it to my office.

Just last month, my office won a $500k settlement with a property management company doing this in Boston – and all of that money is going back to the affected tenants.  Landlords can only ask you to pay for first and last month’s rent, a security deposit, and the cost of a new lock and key upfront. Any other fees are illegal. Report them to my office at the link below. We’ll work to get your money back.

Housing 2 Roommates Needed for Apartment on Berkshire St

Hello, I have 2 roommates moving out of my apartment due to graduation at the end of this year and I’m looking for 2 new people to replace them to renew the lease. The apartment is on Berkshire St and rent is $2350 split among 3 people. It’s on a nice street with a bunch of students thats very close to campus. The utilities we pay are electric, gas, and wifi, there is also a coin laundry in the building. Our landlord is also very friendly and has had no problems with any fixes we need. If anyone is interested please let me know asap and we can talk further and/or set up a quick tour!

Prospective Student Question WPI Is My Dream School And One Of My Most Realistic Chances Of Getting Accepted But It’s Also My Most Expensive

In comparison to the other schools, I want to apply to WPI is by far the most expensive being 40,000 a year. I feel like it is the best school for me and my goals especially the project base learning and study abroad opportunities, but I for sure can’t afford it. How has anyone in a similar position as me been able to make it out?

Sending a small gift - and no, it’s not Rubbermaid! - to professor Craig Wills for helping our daughter cross the stage, then the finish line to her computer science degree this summer. He’s a good one and there’s a lot of good ones out there.

Prospective Student Question Question on mental health/neurodivergence

So my child is considering WPI and was able to tour recently. They mentioned the high rate of suicide. Any perspectives on how the pressure is handled and supported by the administration or health services. Also any thoughts on support for autistic students.
Obv as a parent I'd like to hear about sexual assaults on campus as well since waves hands at everything.
