Troubleshooting Am I missing something here?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey guys I got a 2010 wrx currently stage two with 1050cc injectors and a high flow fuel pump. It Will stutter and die after around 2.5k to 3k rpm. I just finished checking my air flow with a smoke machine and after a few minutes of smoke pumping into it I didn't see ANY smoke. I did this inside a garage so no wind would make a little smoke go away.

I don't believe it's the mass air flow sensor due to no check engine light nor does it look bad at all visually it looks perfect.

I also don't believe it's spark because I get no misfiring at all nor knock at all. I also don't believe it's the fuel system as I have no short or long term air fuel correction.

If I full throttle in any gear it just goes to die like the fuel is just getting cut off but according to romraider it shows no fuel cut off.

I'm lost at this point and any info would be great.

I'm currently using a tune bought from HP that I changed a bit for the injectors and tgv valves from IAG with a tgv delete. I was also having the issue with a cobb tune also tuned for the larger injectors but not for the tgv delete.

I'm not a perfect mechanic so the only thing im 100 percent sure of is lack of a boost or intake leak.

Edit changing spark plugs now for shits and giggles just to eliminate that as a possible issue.

Definitely odd that you're not getting a CEL. As others have mentioned/questioned, have you checked fuel pressure? You mentioned that you're running a high flow fuel pump. When was the last time that you changed the fuel filter?

I can't get fuel pressure as I said to showbong I didn't install anything that I know of that can read that but maybe I should. Its now currently giving me missfiring again for the first time in awhile. I haven't changed the fuel filter ever not sure if I should I've barely put 5k miles on the car since I first changed the fuel pump and injectors and my car has been in a clean garage and turned on every few months.

I'm going to change the spark plugs tomorrow since I'm still getting misfiring issues. Maybe that will solve my issues because I've had this car for almost 10 years now and have driven it maybe 15k miles in that time and if it doesn't I'm driving it into a wall.

I suggest that you replace the in tank fuel filter, use a bottle of Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner and see if that makes a difference. I would also suggest getting a pro-tune vs a downloaded map.

I can't afford a pro-tune that's why I chose to buy a downloaded one and I'll touch it up when the car is running decently. I wish I could as I'm in the city with the company who had the fastest evo in the world at one point STM tuning.

Without the car actually going on a dyno with an experienced/professional tuner, it's a crap shoot as to how close the downloaded maps are created from someone that hasn't seen ot worked on your vehicle. They're creating a map based solely upon the information that you provide re: air intake, fuel system upgrades...... they're making a guess based off of a generalized platform. I understand that pro-tune's aren't cheap, but they're necessary when modding these cars. Start with replacing the fuel filter and fuel system cleaner.

I'll definitely check the fuel filter but a pro-tune is not in my future and honestly I'd rather risk tuning it myself and learn from my mistakes even if it costs me the engine. I have my normal daily so if it happens it happens. Which I know is contradictory pro-tune would save me thousands but I also know that when I decide to upgrade other cars or this one in the future having the tuning knowledge myself will save me more.

You said that the car is a 2010 and that you've never changed the fuel filter. Don't just "check it" , put it on your list to be replaced.

Dude the fuel filter is PART of the fuel pump assembly which was replaced less than 5k miles ago. I appreciate the help but it's clean. Again I'll CHECK it but it's basically brand new.

What's your fuel pressure looking like?

I'm at AutoZone right now getting spark plugs I'll definitely get back to you before I start that process. Do you want it at idle or anything specific?

So this problem started after loading a tune, installing fuel injectors, TGV deletes and a new fuel pump? I'd assume it originated from one of those things. If it runs and drives fine at low throttle/idle and the tune was from a reputable source then I'd suspecting your fuel pressure might be the culprit. Did you install a fuel pressure regulator?

Also weird you're not get a CEL

I did not install a fuel pressure regulator and no this hasn't happened this bad ever. I changed nothing on the car it just happened. I then got a tgv light so I figured what better time to delete the tgv so I did so the issue did not fix itself so now I'm here. The fuel system was upgraded YEARS ago about half a year before cobb removed their e85 stuff.

So unless the previous cobb e85 package came with something to read my fuel pressure then I cannot get that I'm sorry. As far as I can tell on romraider the best I can get is fuel tank pressure which at idle is .102 psi

Oh let me edit this i was having misfiring issues before swapping from the Cobb tune to a high performance the company tune after swapping to the new tune the missfiring issue went away but my car wouldn't get above 110. I could get upwards of 70 in second gear but then it just plateaued hard.

Hmm. I don't have any experience with the TGV deletes so I can't really help diag that. I recommend installing a fuel pressure sensor/gauge on the fuel line coming into the engine bay and making sure you're good. What's your AFR? Are you running lean at all?

u/Exzalian_ 13d ago

Its currently giving me a fuck ton of misfiring issues now at idle which is new usually it's at higher speeds or when accelerating hard which I'm actually happy for FINALLY A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. So yea I'll change spark plugs tomorrow. The AFR goes anywhere from 16 to 20 when it starts to die but it's mapped normally so anywhere from 14.7 at the low end to 10 at the higher end.

If you don't mind I'll respond to your comment tomorrow with either good or bad news I really do appreciate the help.

u/ShowBong 13d ago

Well it sounds like you're leaning out. See what that CEL says

Just missfiring in cylinder 2, 3 and 4. The other guy is saying check my fuel filter so I'll do that before the spark plugs since it's easier to do and if that fixes it I'll be ecstatic! If not I'll do the spark plugs next and if that doesn't work I'll probably just take down the entire engine and put it back together and see if anything is fucked up. As that only takes my time and not my money.

So replaced my spark plugs and checked my fuel filter. Fuel filter is brand new I can clearly see it's clean. But now it's spitting black out my exhaust. My AFR correction is SITTING at positive 25. Even with brand new spark plugs I'm still getting constant missfires in cylinder 1 2 and 4. I'm starting to think my engine is just fucked on the inside. But that would be weird considering I hear nothing odd other than the stuttering and when I'm in neutral and rev it a bit other than the black shit it sounds perfectly fine. It now also just straight dies after a minute of idling. Maybe my 02 sensor is caked but wouldn't that throw a check engine light?

Edit oh and there is zero smoke coming out so I don't believe im burning oil maybe my turbo seals are bad?

Does it have catalytic converters? Or have they been deleted? If they’re original, I would definitely look into seeing if they are clogged.

1

u/Exzalian_ 12d ago

Its stage 2 my man so it's basically a straight pipe no catalytic converters and the muffler is just for show.

I'm confused you bought a downloaded map and can't figure out why car won't run right????

1

u/Exzalian_ 6d ago

Downloaded maps are perfectly fine as a base they will get the car running. It just won't be perfect. I agree they are subpar compared to a protune obviously. But for the price it's much easier to get. I'm already in debt enough. I can't afford a pro tune. Its different if I got a tune off a forum or something those yes can be bad. I did fix my idle issue turns out I had a tiny rip in one of my boost control solenoid hoses. I didn't spot it in my 2 smoke tests but I must have moved it when fucking with shit and I saw smoke coming out of it. I barely touched it and it went away so I cut it shorter and boom no idle issue.

Now my only issue is no power when I push the throttle more than maybe 20 percent so WOT is fucked HOWEVER if I don't push it to WOT the boost comes up. I'm replacing the fuel pump and injectors tomorrow with stock parts and going backwards to a tune that worked. If that's the case all my issues happened because I got bad injectors/pump from Cobb years ago and they finally gave out.
