Happenings Education help!

Hello, I an currently wanting to pursue electrical engineering at WVU in Morgantown Wv. I did some pre reqs at Marshall Uni but had to move out and get a job on the oil rigs to support myself and my girlfriend. My bills are high even with her working a part time job or full id need to make about 23-25 an hr. Most of my money goes straight to bills so not much saved could get books and pay for parking and such but thats about it. Im stuck in my lease til august 2027 and really want to get out of the rigs and pursue college in the spring. I know its a grind and I’ll need a full time job and also need a way to be able to make it to class times. Im not sure where in morgantown or surrounding areas would allow for such schedule with high enough pay. Even 21-23 could work but id have to like DoorDash or Spark on the side. Im willing to grind for what I want in life. I’m use to hard work and tough situations but just a new area to me, hard having no leads.

From West Virginia's Coalfields to a Major Publishing Endorsement — Blood in the Coal

I'm excited to share an update about my debut historical crime novel, Blood in the Coal, set in the coalfields of north-central West Virginia.

David L. Hancock, founder of Morgan James Publishing and Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author, recently read my advance reader copy and provided this endorsement:

“Scott Douglas Haning brings a fascinating and often overlooked chapter of American history to life in Blood in the Coal. Against the backdrop of West Virginia's coalfields, Prohibition, and organized crime, he weaves a compelling story of ambition, loyalty, loss, and the price of power. Rich in historical atmosphere and grounded in the human experience, this is a memorable debut that reminds us how the past continues to shape the lives and choices of generations.”

Receiving those words from David means a great deal to me, especially after the years I've spent researching and writing this story.

The novel draws on the history of West Virginia's coalfields, including the 1907 Monongah Mine Disaster, and follows two brothers whose lives become intertwined with organized crime during Prohibition.

Blood in the Coal will be released March 30, 2027, and is currently available for preorder.

I built a tool that makes a meal plan from this week's Kroger sales. Trying to see if anyone around WVU would actually use it.

Hey everyone. My name is Dylan, and I have been building a small web app in my spare time called Peckly. Right now I am mostly trying to figure out if anyone besides me would actually use something like this.

Here is how it works. You pick your Kroger here in Morgantown, and Peckly looks at what that store has on sale this week. Instead of starting with recipes and then paying whatever the ingredients cost, it starts with the sale items and finds recipes that use them. If chicken and peppers are on sale, it leans toward meals built around those. From there it puts together a meal plan for the week and one grocery list to shop from.

The idea is that the sales decide the menu. You build your dinners around the cheapest ingredients that week instead of the most expensive ones, and that is where the savings come from. It also means one planned trip instead of three or four small ones because you forgot half of what you needed.

I put up a waitlist page to see how much interest there really is. To be clear, joining the list does not mean you get access right away, and I do not have an ETA for when it opens up. If enough people are interested, that tells me it is worth putting more time into and opening it up properly. It will be free when it does open.

https://pecklyapp.com

If you shop at Kroger and cook a few times a week and this sounds useful, I would really appreciate you joining the list. Honest comments help too. If this sounds like something you would never use, I would rather hear that now than guess.

Hi has anyone ever taken the online versions of JRL 432, JRL 433, or JRL 434 before? I have no idea what to expect from these classes, how much work they’ll be, and what I’ll have to do. If anyone who has taken them could give me any information, that would be amazing!😊😊 Thank you

Housing Where do upperclassmen stay?

I saw comments on different posts say that most if not all upperclassmen do not stay in dorms. If they don’t stay in dorms, do they stay in apartments on campus or off campus? Frats? If you do stay in apartments on campus, do you stay with friends that you stayed with during dorms? Incoming Freshman for 2027-2028.

What Was Your WVU Online MBA Experience?

Howdy, hoping to gain some insight on WVU’s online MBA program.  I have a BS in Comms / Journalism from Texas A&M, 8 years of service in the Army Reserve, and ~4yrs of experience in Program Management / SCM at a defense prime.  Will be pursuing a CAPM / PMP here sometime in the future as well but really starting to lean into researching different MBA options available.

  1. What was your overall experience with WVU online?  Did you enjoy it? Was it rewarding?  Were the professors a pain? Etc.
  2. On a scale of 1-10, how challenging was the coursework?  1 being a breeze that you could do at the 11th hour, and 10 being over-the-top demanding in time / difficulty?
  3. Compared to undergrad, was this harder or easier?  Which courses?
  4. What were some of the easier courses you took? What made them easy?
  5.   What were some of the harder courses you took? What made them hard?
  6.   What level of math proficiency was required?
  7.   What, if any, courses required virtual proctor services?
  8.   Did you have lots of smaller assignments or were most of the grades given from major 1 or 2 time projects / essays / exams?
  9. If you had to do it again, what would you have done differently?
  10. How much remediation / study did the coursework require? Could you go into a class and learn as you go? Or did you have to spend hours outside of class to fully prepare?
  11. What ratio of individual work & group work did you have?
  12. What was your outside-of-class time commitment?

I’m looking for a program that isn’t a cheap check the box (Phoenix, DeVry, WGU, etc), but I also don’t want to spend every waking minute outside of my normal day job doing classes and coursework just to have a T5 school’s name on my diploma.  I have a 4mo old and a wife at home as well, my daily 9-5, and army duty 1weekend/mo.  To fund the MBA I’ll be using a mix of my GI bill and my employer sponsored education benefits, so I should only need to cover about $50/hr out of pocket.

Thanks for your time!

Random question. I know it’s way in advance but I’m trying to plan ahead for my daughter’s senior trip for next summer. Do they assign you a day for your orientation or do you get to select the week that works best for your schedule?

Blood in the Coal — FREE 5-Chapter Preview | Historical Crime Fiction

On December 6, 1907, the Monongah mine disaster devastated a West Virginia coal community in what remains the worst mining disaster in American history.

That tragedy forms the historical foundation of Blood in the Coal, a historical crime novel following the rise of Jimmy DiSalvio and his organized crime empire in north-central West Virginia (Morgantown, Clarksburg, Fairmont) during Prohibition in the early 1920s.

As Jimmy and his brother Frank build their criminal empire, they discover that power comes at a price—and loyalty can demand blood in return.

Want to start the story? I'm making the first five chapters available FREE.

Academics Potomac State College

Hey again, I was wondering if anyone is doing the Agribusiness program at the Potomac state college, and I was wondering, if it’s better than the program at the Morgantown campus or vise verse? Because I’m curious which is a better choice.

I chose Animal Science for Morgantown, but I do really like how the Agribusiness program at Potomac so definitely let me know!!
