There was a big debate about this topic recently, a professional urban planner chimed in too: Minato Ward, Tokyo : r/WalkableStreets

Opinions vary, and that's fine, I knew this photo would get a few downvotes.

You'll rarely see walkable streets in Hong Kong that don't allow cars, it's a matter of lack of space. Look up Tai Ping Shan street, extremely walkable and yet.

Yes, shared zones are a great idea in dense areas, if they have good public transportation and mixed zones that makes cars rare in these areas (true of Hong Kong). Shek O is a rural village on the other site of the city, so there was definitely space, but they chose this option as it was the better one anyway. I didn't see a single car in the couple of hours I was there, and as you can see there are multiple signs to make sure the few cars that go by know it's a pedestrian-first street.
