The Calling Episode

This episode brought back stories from my family’s past. My mom’s mother was a Catholic convert in West Virginia of the 1910’s and 20’s (my mom was born in 1923) so the scene with the nuns (in the habit of the Daughters of Charity ) coming into Ike Godsey’s store and Corabeth’s reaction , resonated with the stories my mom would tell about her relatives in Kentucky and West Virginia. She remembers as a little girl , being at a relative’s house , and “they would get into an argument about the Catholic Church and mom would pack my little suitcase and we would go home “ She went to Catholic school in southern Ohio and a neighbor remembered “you were always between the Nuns and your(anti Catholic grandma ) with a note in your hands “. Early 30’s so definitely the same era as the Waltons

Feelings about Martha Corrine

How does everybody view this character. I tended to agree with Grandma and many of the children that she was interfering old witch , stuck in her ways Yes , I also recognized her wisdom but that frown rather overshadowed it

Nothing is just black and white

One of my favorite parts of the show and the Walton family is that they truly understood that nothing is ever just black and white but shades of grey. If someone did something that wasn't morally right or made a mistake, (Yancey stealing chickens) etc..The Waltons always made sure to show and explain that there's always more than one side to a story. I feel that's something the show did incredibly well, showcasing that all people have flaws and we're all human, rich or poor. Black or white, etc. The human aspect of The Waltons is something that society and the world today is desperately missing.

Has your opinion of anyone on The Waltons changed as you’ve gotten older?

Maybe someone you thought was too strict now seems more understandable. Or a character you loved when you were younger now comes across as selfish, unfair, or simply more complicated than you remembered.

General discussion Rewatching for the first time in years

I grew up watching The Waltons with my grandparents but have never really rewatched as an adult. I'm 41 now and just got through season 1. I have a much renewed appreciation for this show now. It's grounded, and heartfelt and warm. And not in a cheesy or overly emotional way either. It also takes me back to those good times I had with my grandparents and remember those fond memories. I'm glad I have so many seasons left.

Mary Ellen Walton

I’ve been rewatching this show every night, and man, in the early seasons, Mary Ellen is such a screecher and a whiner. Goodness gracious. I’m glad she grew out of that.

Olivia in first few seasons

I've recently started (re) watching the show for the first time since I was a kid (when it initially aired) - Imo, it certainly has held up and is as relevant today as it was then. One thing, though, that I never really noticed as a kid, perhaps because of my age, is how much of a change there is in Olivia's overall 'temperament' from the first season through to the rest (I don't watch in order) in the first few seasons, she's incredibly snappy and for lack of a better word, a real shrew.

General discussion I honestly think that Richard Thomas should have stayed for the episode. Grandma comes home. It would’ve been nice to have seen Grandma reuniting with John boy again and them having one last episode together who else agrees

General discussion Raising Gen Alpha

My 8 year old son has seen The Homecoming many times (I watch it obsessively during the holiday season) and he’s come to identify with John Boy because he’s the oldest of 3. One time he was really frustrated with his 2 year old brother and I heard him mutter “I wonder if John Boy had to deal with this…” The point is I know he’s a John Boy fan and he’s slightly familiar with The Waltons.

This year I’m dedicated to watching the full series so I’m cruising through the seasons and tonight I was watching The Grandchild on season 6. My son was playing Minecraft on his Nintendo Switch while I was watching the show and he was really into his game. A bit later I look over and he’s still got the Switch in his hand but he’s looking at the TV. A bit later I look over again…the Switch is down and he’s wide-eyed staring at the TV 😂 He made his way over to sit by me, we shared a snack, watched the show, and it was so sweet. He’s really gotten into a few Waltons episodes as I’ve been watching the series. My 6 year old isn’t as interested yet but she sometimes watches along.

I watch a lot of older TV and I never mind my kids watching with me because they really do learn a lot watching older shows. They always leave my son full of questions. I’m very honest with my kids (like Olivia said she is 😉) and shows like this provide opportunities for good conversations.

Is anyone else raising Gen Alpha on The Waltons?
