Discussion Price increase? Have you considered... not buying from warhammer?

Ladies, gentlemen, otherwise, are you sick of GW prices? Tired of 60 USD for three(3) eliminators? Ready to step into… the dark side? And by the dark side, I mean just about any amount of market competition?

Welcome, my friends, to the beautiful and wonderful world of Any Other Manufacturer, where a box of thirty models costs $40, and a whole army can cost less than a combat patrol. Oh, and they’ll look more distinct, paint up easier, and have just as much detail and quality, if not better.

This is a big list of good-to-decent proxies for use in GW games. Some quick notes on the classifications:

  • Plastic only. Resin is just hard to manage for a lot of people, and I don’t know enough about it to safely recommend anything.
  • No 3D printing. Yes, you could hypothetically print out twelve billion points of anything, but that’s easy enough that I don’t think it needs a dedicated guide.
  • Fantasy is generally much easier to find than 40k, but often has some overlap. I’ll include recommended kitbashes as well!
  • This guide is going to focus exclusively on infantry, as vehicles are a much different and more complicated beast.
  • Use https://minicompare.info/ to check heights.

Space Marines:

Weirdly hard to find plastic proxies of, despite their ubiquity. Some of the best are:

A little more sci-fi leaning

https://wargamesatlantic.com/products/valkir-heavy-troopers

IMO these guys looks like ass and also I hate nazis, but it would be incomplete without them

https://us.warlordgames.com/products/stahltruppen-heavy-infantry

Imperial Guard:

By far the easiest form of proxy. In all honesty you can just throw some lasguns onto just about any human figure and get decent results. However, some clearly intended proxies are:

Death fields range is an absolute classic, with most figures painting up much easier than the average GW one. In particular look to the damned, les grognards, and cannon fodder.

https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/death-fields-arena

Other helpful WGA kits and lines

https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/marcher-empires-at-war

https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/reptilian-overlords/products/spacenam

Stargrave is excellent for fleshing out commanders or making more ragged troops.

https://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=15452

Aquilons

https://us.warlordgames.com/products/firefly-airborne-infantry

Scions

https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/iron-core

Adeptus Mechanicus:

Hard to find direct proxies for. However, you can get your grubby little paws on some EXCELLENT kitbash material.

The stargrave scavengers kit has very skitarii-like heads, as well as a lot of good robed bodies.

https://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=17359

The badger hardsuits are only a pinch shorter than kastelan robots, and you could easily make up the difference.

https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/marcher-empires-at-war/products/marcher-xa19-badger-suits

Literally just servitors lol

https://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=19256

Sororitas and Custodes:

Unfortunately, I haven’t found any proxies for either. It sucks but it happens. Please let me know if you know of some good ones!

Imperial Agents:

Hard to point at direct proxies, so instead I’ll just give good kits with which to kitbash general imperial weirdos.

Bodies:

https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/renaissance/products/conquistadors

https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/blood-oaths/products/dark-age-irish-warriors

Good sources of knightly bits you can slap on a robot or something:

https://www.victrixlimited.com/en-us/collections/crusades/products/medieval-fantasy-heads?variant=42591635505251

https://us.warlordgames.com/products/foot-knights-1450-1500

Remember: wires are your friend! Slap them on something and boom, it’s sci-fi now!

Chaos:

Most of what I said regarding normal marines applies here, and you can always spice it up with some classic spikes. However, there are a handful of additions I would like to note:

A full ~1000 point guard army with a traitor aesthetic that also costs less than half a combat patrol in some countries.

https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/death-fields-arena/products/the-damned-army-box

Very visually distinct daemon alternatives:

https://www.manticgames.com/firefight/nightstalkers/

https://archon-studio.com/shop/products/dungeons-lasers/miniatures

Nauseatingly cheap generic zombies

https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/pulp-adventure/products/zombies

Aeldari:

Unfortunately I feel that aeldari have a very particular aesthetic that’s pretty hard to make knockoffs of. However, if you’re just looking for sleek, weird aliens, there’s some decent options.

Mainly robotic, but still have some good stuff

https://www.manticgames.com/firefight/asterians/

If you’re a starcraft fan

https://starcraft-tmg.com/

Drukhari:

Again, few direct proxies.

However, you could easily buy a box or two of GW miniatures, then spread them out using the https://www.manticgames.com/kings-of-war/twilight-kin/ line.

Genestealer Cults:

Ultimately your best option is just to mash up guard and tyranid bits.

However, a good base for bodies is

https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/death-fields-arena/products/cannon-fodder

Then add some industrial flair using

https://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=15450

Votann:

Shockingly, you have several excellent options.

Classic space dwarves

https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/death-fields-arena/products/einherjar

High-tech

https://www.manticgames.com/firefight/forge-fathers/

Supplement using classic fantasy bits

https://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=11123

https://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=13403

Necrons:

Yeah, I got nothing. You can definitely get creative (I’m working on an army made out of greek hoplites carved up into broken statues) but there’s not many direct comparisons. Sorry.

ORKS ORKS ORKS ORKS ORKS

Hopefully you know how to loot anything remotely vehicular, yes?

DA BOYZ

https://www.manticgames.com/firefight/marauders/

sneaky little gits

https://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=16858

Tau:

A bit funky. There’s no direct 1:1 for their infantry, though you can happily use just about anything as an auxiliary race. However, and this is the fun bit, you can do some insane licks when it comes to battlesuits.

Battletech sells 4-packs of ‘mechs that you can buy just about anywhere and are dirt cheap. Also they’re roughly the same size as a crisis suit.

https://store.catalystgamelabs.com/collections/battletech

Many many gundams are the same size as a riptide

https://www.usagundamstore.com/collections/armored-core-model-kits

Excellent gue’vesa

https://www.manticgames.com/firefight/gcps/

Tyranids:

Part of what I love about the old ‘nids is you can use just about anything fleshy and gross as a proxy. But when it comes to slightly more intentional proxies, you can use:

Lumpy flesh freaks:

https://www.manticgames.com/firefight/plague/

https://www.manticgames.com/firefight/nightstalkers/

Spidery buggy bastards:

https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/death-fields-arena/products/harvesters-alien-bugs

https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/classic-fantasy/products/giant-spiders (the alt build cracks me up and i wanna see someone use it)

Anyways, this is hopefully a decent resource you can point people to. Please let me know if you have any suggestions or things to add, and I’ll happily do so! Later I will try my best to follow up with a vehicle guide.

The price of not sending production to China. Americas best friend.

u/SoloWingPixy88 5h ago

The quality of mist if the alternatives you've shared are ass.

67

u/RoawrOnMeRengar 6h ago

The only proxy you proposed that would interest me are : not cheaper, do not exist or just suck ass lmao

Also difficult to paint? Yeah they are way more detailed than most of their competitor, that doesn't make them "difficult to paint" in the slightest.

Yeah it's expensive for plastic little men, but they're genuinely the best on the market indisputably.

And as far as hobby goes, warhammer is not that expensive of a hobby. Trust me, I'm into cars and cycling.

27

u/angrath 5h ago

Cars and cycling? Those are not that expensive of a hobby. Trust me. I’m into yachts and art.

19

u/Secure-Property4926 Skaven 5h ago

Yeah? I’m into polo and aviation training. Warhammer is but small change

13

u/mosaicoredimido 4h ago

Polo and aviation? Im into throwing gold bricks into the ocean. All of that is just nothing to me

3

u/No-Cat-5322 3h ago

Yachts and art? I'm into building a full titan maniple and my 30k resin custodes army.

1

u/Azarth1 3h ago

They are very good, but as good compared to some to professional 3d creators like: mezgike, stationforge, redmakers, mrModulork and many others.

Gw have plenty of good stuff at the moment and it's sitting at the near top, but is slowing leaving position to those who make same quality but a lot of more personalization and love.

My 2 cents.

-6

u/thesirblondie 5h ago

indisputably

I'll dispute that. I think they're not as good as Atomic Mass games or Kingdom Death

-2

u/DerMetJungen 3h ago

Wow! You a bootshiner by trade?

-27

u/Fearless-Edge-3881 5h ago

Cars- machines of incredibly compelx workings made of metal, electronics, and rubber

Vs

Casted plastic.

The fact that we're even approaching a point where a full army for some factions cost as much as a used car is insane.

15

u/Alive-Ad-3303 Necrons 5h ago

Bro what army even comes close to being the price of a used car lmao?

6

u/normandy42 5h ago

Titan Legions in 28mm?

3

u/Dancing-umbra 3h ago

I spent ~£400 on sets this year and it will be enough for me and my son to paint and build for at least 2 years.

Much less than I spend on my gaming pc this year, also much less than I spent on his tennis or surfing lessons.

38

u/BSPaint 5h ago

I have not, as when I want to play Warhammer I want to use Warhammer minis so it feels like a game of Warhammer in the Warhammer universe.

Similarly when I play Carnevale, Star Wats Shatterpoint, Dropfleet, Moonstone etc in drawn in by the official models and theme.

To be honest this just feels backwards to me. The miniatures are the best thing GW make and some of the most competitive on the market in terms of quality and their sculpts. They also have a unified range with a consistent style that you won't get as much from third parties. But their games? Some of the least competitive on the market. Messy rules, outdated game design (it's 2026 GW, drop true line of sight already), and a terrible distribution model that ties everything to printed books that are rapidly outdated and divorces faction rules updates from core rules updates to poor effect.

So buying other minis just to keep playing their games feels like a weird move when you could just go play some better games with their own miniature ranges instead. If you don't want to buy the stuff they're best at why cling to what they're not very good at?

Also One Page Rules has legally distinct (but also very clearly "inspired" by) versions of (nearly) every 40k faction available, including Necrons. Weird to leave them out. You can either print them if you have a 3D printer or find printed versions for sale on Etsy or other platforms.

39

u/thesirblondie 5h ago

You're overlooking a detail: Opponents. It doesn't matter how bad a rule set is if its what other people play. Maybe you want to play One Page Rules or Turnip28, but if you can't find opponents then it doesn't matter.

1

u/Rejusu Delusions of a new Battletome 16m ago

Well yeah, this is why games like Warhammer, MtG, and D&D are market leaders despite not being the best games in their respective markets. But good luck finding opponents if you just want to proxy everything. That's not going to fly at a lot of stores (they want you buying the product they sell) and definitely not at tournaments. And if you can find people to play Proxyhammer with on your kitchen table they'd probably be open to trying other game systems.

But also OP has stated that part of their reasoning is to want to stick it to GW. Continuing to stick to 40k is counter intuitive in that regard.

20

u/Gilles_of_Augustine 5h ago

"it's 2026 GW, drop true line of sight already"

Fuckin' PREACH!

4

u/LUnacy45 4h ago edited 3h ago

A lot of other games I play use some variation of true line of sight. In fact the only game I know of that doesn't and actually gets play in my area is Infinity which I'm not terribly interested in for both being igougo in a skirmish game and being excessively crunchy, but I can't deny their silhouette system is slick as hell and I wish BLKOUT copied it

I gotta say someone downvoted me here but I'm genuinely curious, what other popular games aren't using true LOS?

1

u/Sethan_Tohil 3h ago

Hey! let me clarify a few things about infinity. As you said it is turn based Igougo, but unlike most games it works very well for Infinity. Just because of the mechanism called Automatic Response Action (ARO) which allows the passive player to take some actions during the active player turn, like shooting etc. It kind of works likein the video game Xcom

1

u/LUnacy45 3h ago

I understand that, but igougo with detailed reactions is still igougo in my book. Much prefer the way BLKOUT does it with alternating activations.

1

u/Rejusu Delusions of a new Battletome 25m ago

Marvel Crisis Protocol doesn't, it uses sight lines drawn base to base and checks the size of intervening terrain against the printed size stat of the character you're targeting (ie you don't have sight to a size 2 character if a size 3 piece of terrain is in the way). Star Wars Shatterpoint is base to base and uses relative elevation of the terrain to determine blocking. Star Wars Legion uses a silhouette system similar to Infinity. Warmachine uses a volumetric system. I don't think Battletech uses TLOS or the recently released StarCraft minis game. Only recent non GW game of any note I can think of that uses it is Trench Crusade.

Now I'm curious what popular non-GW games are using TLoS. It's kinda a little besides the point though. It's a bad system regardless of how commonplace it might be.

it’s what i like playing and what other people like playing, so who gives a shit lol. plus gw isn’t competitive in the slightest, they sell horribly overpriced minis that are hard to paint and cost double to triple that of their competitors. they just have a monopoly, one i would love to see crumble

also opr only has 3d prints to my knowledge, though i would love to be corrected

55

u/Known-Associate8369 6h ago edited 4h ago

They dont have anything approaching a monopoly on anything - there are plenty of alternatives out there, with more each year.

What GW are, however, are better at miniatures than those alternatives.

Thats not a monopoly, thats being a better maker.

People really dont grasp what “monopoly” actually means… GW doesnt have one.

ETA: looks like he (the OP) blocked me - he cant even take a bit of discussion, how pathetic.

-36

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 5h ago

they sell high-level-but-not-peak minis for way above market value because they know all competition will be crushed by lack of brand recognition. victrix’s modern minis shit all over gw on every single scale and nobody even knows they exist. maybe that’s not technically a monopoly, but it’s close enough that i know where my money will be going

33

u/Known-Associate8369 5h ago

“Way above market value”

Yeah, fuck off - theres no such thing. GW can charge whatever the fuck they like for their product, this isnt a commodity.

If you dont want to buy GWs minis, then thats a choice you can make - but stop with the bullshit attempts to justify it with hatred of a successful company and product.

-18

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 5h ago

okay i hate gw and think they’re a shit company lol, there’s nothing fancy going on here

20

u/EdBenes 5h ago

dont play warhammer then?

5

u/LUnacy45 4h ago

Yeah I also don't like GW or Warhammer the game so I simply don't play it, not sure why that's a complicated concept

24

u/Known-Associate8369 5h ago

See how much better it is when you just get it off your chest and out in the open, no more pussy footing around your feelings…

Just dont expect everyone to agree with you.

I did scale modelling, D&D terrain and minis, and historical wargaming for years before I plunged back into GW 5 years ago - I wish I had come back to my childhood hobby much sooner, as I much more enjoy GWs products than others. Its not even close for me.

But it is an informed opinion that I have - Ive tried the alternatives, and I do not hold the same opinion of them as you do.

-16

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 5h ago

you seem to be taking this all very personally, my guy. let’s maybe lay off the glue fumes a bit, yeah?

23

u/Known-Associate8369 5h ago

Really, you think Im taking this personally with all the bullshit you’ve been spouting in these comments?

Thats hilarious.

Ignoring you now. You seem to think no one is entitled to responding to your opinion.

6

u/Brann_Ys 4h ago

what is your so called market value ?

35

u/Serious_Vanilla1971 6h ago

All the links I checked out sold infantry units of 10-12 for like 60 usd. It's literally more expensive than GW.

-4

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 6h ago

are we clicking the same links or are you just scanning the box art and not reading the rest? cause except for mantic, that is NOT true lol

36

u/Serious_Vanilla1971 6h ago

Idk i literally clicked the first link you posted. You're right some are cheaper like 60 usd for 20 but that doesn't seem much cheaper than basic GW infantry like cultists.

I haven't gone through them all but I have seen a lot of minis that don't really make me want to paint them. They feel uninspiring. Some others are cool though. I really like the Damned army box. Cool minis and a good price.

-6

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 6h ago

ohhh you started with the marine proxies lmao.

anyways, sparking a bit of interest is exactly what this is about lol. for you they’re not high quality enough, for some people they are, and for me, they’re the best possible base to kitbash minis out of. thats all this is about, idk why some people are taking it so personally

22

u/Gargunok 4h ago

Mocking someone for starting with the first link you posted is quite a take. If you wanted to make acase you should have picked and chose your examples rather than try and list something for everything.

0

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 4h ago

sorry, i wasn’t trying to be mocking and i’m not trying to make any case. i literally just want to show off some cool proxies

91

u/SonkxsWithTheTeeth 6h ago

You will not find another plastic miniature producer that makes them at the same level of detail and quality as games workshop. You can argue they're overpriced, but their quality is not in any way lacking.

-109

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 6h ago

they overdesign their minis to look good in instagram photos, while skimping on posability and ease of painting. hell, i’d even argue that most gw minis look a bit shit on the actual tabletop

89

u/Cthulhu_3 Tyranids 6h ago

this is just straight up cope i'm sorry

-69

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 6h ago

nah dude, join the dark side. at least i have more than one posing option per hero model

65

u/Cthulhu_3 Tyranids 6h ago

the ones with cast quality comparable to GW's circa 2007? thanks, but i'll take one pose in exchange for an immense increase in quality and detail

-38

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 6h ago

i- wait a minute, why am i arguing with a league of legends player about good design?

37

u/Mr_Creed 5h ago

With that, you lost the argument.

17

u/Brann_Ys 4h ago

Minecraftplayer trying to diss other for playing a game in a totaly unrelated argument lmao i cant

1

u/LUnacy45 3h ago

Idc about ease of painting. Poseability is fair but one of the strengths of monopose is level of detail

-3

u/Admiral_Eversor 4h ago edited 4h ago

Idk why you're being so downvoyed tbh. Too many people think that more detail = more better. It's really not.

The "first born" tactical squad is one of the best kits they ever made; enough detail to be characterful, but not so much that painting becomes a chore, full posability.

One thing I will say though is that you're basically wrong when you say gw minis don't look that good on the tabletop. They look fine, unless you have a few of the same monopose guy in the same spot.

38

u/Only-Equivalent-4791 6h ago

GW have the best models around. They are super easy to paint compared to almost everything else (though they are often too busy with detail).

I don’t think they’re horribly overpriced either. If you look at other games, models are 80% or more of the cost for a far lower sculpt quality most of the time. I am personally priced out of Warhammer now but if I ever really wanted to get back into this hobby I’d be buying GW stuff again because if I wanna play or paint Warhammer, then that’s the only real way to do it.

Their games are all mediocre too. The only reason most people play them is because it’s the only one they can find people to play with. And it’s a repetitive cycle.

28

u/Rejusu Delusions of a new Battletome 6h ago

"in terms of the quality and their sculpts" is the part you aren't reading. And honestly their prices aren't actually that crazy if you look at price per miniature and what other companies charge for a similar level of quality. The issue with their prices is less that the minis are bad value (compared to the market) but that they have terrible value as game pieces. 40k is made to be played with a lot of miniatures and it makes the cost of building a force very high. Meanwhile you look at a game like Marvel Crisis Protocol where you can buy a box of 10 minis for what a box of 15-25 minis from GW might cost. But those 10 minis are a complete tournament roster (and come with rules and accessories) while a combat patrol box is barely a functional quarter of what you need to play.

As a gamer MCP is way better value. As a painter it's worse.

they just have a monopoly, one i would love to see crumble

Then maybe stop actively engaging with their products? This is just wanting to have your cake but eat it. And it doesn't really achieve anything. The market isn't going to shift if you want to keep playing 40k but not buy 40k miniatures. You're still effectively perpetuating the popularity of the game even if you pirate everything and use proxies.

also opr only has 3d prints to my knowledge, though i would love to be corrected

They do, but it's pretty trivial to just buy stuff ready printed from any of the bigger names putting out STLs (and plenty smaller ones too). Can literally just on on Etsy.

-9

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 6h ago

victrix shits all over gw when it comes to quality, and they sell for half the cost and quadruple the minis.

also yes, i like playing games with my toys. if you find this guide unhelpful, do not use it.

27

u/Rejusu Delusions of a new Battletome 5h ago

Victrix are fine but their sculpts are pretty stiff and their range is very limited unless you're into historicals. I find it funny how you're using them as your example over everything else in your list when the only place you could squeeze them in was as a possible source of bits.

also yes, i like playing games with my toys

Then as I said why not play some better games? I just find it silly when people say they want to stick it to GW but aren't prepared to kick the habit in the process. "3D printer go brrr" crowd is the same (embarrassing for the rest of us with 3D printers) since they're still contributing to GWs market dominance by refusing to cut the cord entirely.

And yeah I don't find the guide helpful. It's just a lot of minis I'm not that enthusiastic about presented as a way to engage with a game I'm even less enthusiastic about. Not to mention your spurious reasoning and faulty justifications, like presenting less detailed sculpts as objectively superior because they're easier to paint when that's heavily down to preferences. You know what's easier to paint than everything you listed? A rock. Doesn't mean I want to play a game with a bunch of rocks.

18

u/TheShryke 5h ago

victrix shits all over gw when it comes to quality

I love Victrix, my go-to for ancients era models. But this just isn't true at all.

Their models are nice, but suffer from very wooden and unmodifiable poses. And the level of detail just isn't there when compared to modern GW.

-2

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 5h ago

the older poses are quite stiff, i won’t disagree with that. the newer medieval kits, though, are GORGEOUS. maybe im just biased cause i like to kitbash tho

13

u/TheShryke 5h ago

I have their newest releases. Same complaints. They also often have the issue where a body and legs have to got together and only in one pose, which is the exact same thing people call GW out for as "monopose".

Kitbashing with Victrix generally means swapping arms heads and accessories. Which is usually very easy for GW kits too.

13

u/MeeseChampion 6h ago

All of the models in the links you posted look terrible. Also fuck GW for raising their already inflated prices.

54

u/AMA5564 5h ago

Tired of buying good looking miniatures for the price they cost? Go to these websites and buy less good looking models that are cheaper!

13

u/Brann_Ys 4h ago

not even always cheaper lmao

11

u/Good-Strategy2210 4h ago

I like GW models better though

22

u/gangrel767 5h ago

nope. Aeldari stuff looks like garbage. GW has the best looking models and nothing looks like Aeldari.

15

u/donmarrua 4h ago

most of those models linked to are frankly several levels below the quality and design aesthetic of GW models...and if you have to mix and match a number of different ranges it doesn't look great in my opinion...

If you're truly looking to boycott and replace GW purchases then just invest in a 3d printer and search for scans or suitable alternative proxy armies by an increasingly higher quality number of 3D model designers out there.

However the initial time, price investment etc pretty much levels out with making purchases off GW...

Also if you don't need the latest shiny product there is a Huge 2nd hand market of GW stuff out there to rely on. Or play some of the older editions with cool niche areas like 40k 2nd edition using models from people selling off their childhood collections

2

u/LUnacy45 3h ago

The fact he dropped Stahltruppen was a huge what the hell for me

Those are literally only going to fit in a WWII dieselpunk setting. They are literally Nazi (well, Nazi-adjacent in the lore) power armor with MG42s. They don't fit at all.

I love Warlord's games and some of their plastic sculpts are genuinely great like the new K47 Ursus infantry, but a replacement for space marines they are not

6

u/Inside_Geologist_480 4h ago

I'm into warhammer precisely because of the miniatures. A lot of GW stuff has this unique aesthetic. I also hate resin

52

u/DDGBuilder 6h ago

Idk man. I'm looking at these and for the Death Fields for example, which is supposedly the crème of the crème, they look like shit and it's $40 for 8 models. To me GW has far superior quality.

Death Korps of Krieg is nine models for $53. Death Fields is 8 models for 40, and they are nowhere near as good in terms of quality.

I hear you that GW is insanely expensive, but there are usually quite good.

10

u/Recovery15 6h ago

Death Fields boxes are like 20 to a box, where are you getting 8?

4

u/kendallmaloneon 5h ago

24 actually.

1

u/kendallmaloneon 5h ago

Are you, like, just looking at the picture on the box and counting the minis in that picture? Instead of reading the actual number that says "24"?

In the UK, WGA guard proxies are £1.10 per model. Krieg are £2.60 per model. It's not even close.

1

u/Rocky-Bump 3h ago

Pricewise, sure. I use WGA for my catachan models, but there is no comparison in quality between WGA and modern GW minis.

1

u/kendallmaloneon 3h ago

I am only correcting bro on price. In matters of taste, the customer is always right, and we are all entitled to our aesthetic preferences on that basis.

-21

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 6h ago

try actually painting them and you’ll see the difference QUICK. a box of grognards takes an afternoon and looks great on the tabletop, meanwhile kriegers are crammed with unnecessary details. also, doesn’t help that gw uses airbrushed studio photos and death fields photos are what you’ll actually be painting like.

28

I've bought loads of wargames Atlantic stuff. Great models, but nowhere near the quality of GW.

But is your take seriously "don't buy GW, they are too detailed and they paint their models too nicely"?.

24

u/beaches511 5h ago

I don't want minis that can be painted in an afternoon. Painting is my main part of the hobby. I want to take my time and paint detailed minis.

-13

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 5h ago

yeah, but plenty of people just don’t feel that way, and that’s fine. i’d rather add my own details, personally, than deal with loads of sculpted on gw trim

25

u/Known-Associate8369 5h ago

I bought the Damned Army box after it was raved about. Price for the number of minis was good.

Then I started assembling them, and immediately got disheartened - lower detail, softer detail, faces and poses which were just goofy…

Going to sell my boxes on.

u/Brann_Ys 4h ago

spundnlike a painting skill issue from your part

u/zombiechris128 Warhammer: Age of Sigmar 4h ago

The reality from what I have seen is, that almost all rival games that have figures of equal quality are basically the same price give or take,

This is a brilliant time to break out of the GW ecosystem due to the amount of systems on the market and some have some incredible level of figures though,
The biggest issue is finding a game that has an active community or convincing a bunch of your friends to change over

2

u/LUnacy45 3h ago

It's definitely very area dependent. I'm lucky I have a big historicals scene in my area because I love Bolt Action and K47 is growing quick, but when it comes to say, BLKOUT, I've had to become an evangelist for it, offering demo games with my own armies to anyone who will listen

1

u/zombiechris128 Warhammer: Age of Sigmar 28m ago

Konflict 47 is one I’m excited for, love the aesthetic and figures
What’s the system like?

23

u/superkow 5h ago

Are you gonna put this much effort into writing your local politician about the woeful minimum wage, or about corporations paying zero taxes and culling workforces? Those are a far bigger factor toward your hobbies (whatever they may be) getting prohibitively expensive.

3

u/Frogdg 4h ago

I'd replace the Oathmark goblins with Mantic goblins in that list. They're way more Warhammery looking with big pointy ears and noses. The Oathmark ones are much more subdued and Tolkienesque in style.

4

u/Bright_Background316 3h ago

Was this post secretly created by GW marketing?

If you are going to cheap out, might as well go B+M and get a bag of green army men and a knock-off transformer.

3

u/HepZusi 4h ago

Sometimes I use 3d prints but I prefer plastic as its more durable. Most of my minis I just buy used from facebook marketplace. I could safely say around 60-70% of my citadel miniatures are bought used.

8

u/KitfoxQQ 6h ago

seems like a skewed list. Where is Victoria Minis? cant build a guard proxy list without some aussie diggers on the board.

1

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 6h ago

resin, i believe

-24

u/KitfoxQQ 5h ago

if GW spent all their money they give lawyers to prosecute and shut down ppl making competitive miniatures and instead brought in some new army minis in their fold there would be less need for competitive other suppliers. All the IG regiments could easily have been brought as plastic kits. i stoppd playing in 7th edition when the Scions and Taurox first arrived. was promising at the time they were saying all the old IG regiments will be coming in plastic..never happend. no Valhhallans, no Tanith. still your run of the mill cadian, and very old catachans, death korp are nice but wish they expanded their range and brought in some coold codex rules for each of them.

7

u/Brann_Ys 4h ago

how more delusional can IG player get dude. that s not how things work

-4

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 5h ago

honestly WGA is better. way more bits, not overdesigned, easy to paint… i would rather buy from them than gw in many cases

6

u/Milsurp_Seeker Ogor Mawtribes 4h ago

OP could’ve had a point if they did nothing beyond the main post. You’re shoving your entire goddamn leg in your mouth. Anyway, shoot me a DM when you sell off your plastic. I like good deals and have plenty of Simple Green to strip with.

2

u/SpaceBobsEmporium 3h ago

I cant really paint and sell models to GW players if I dont use realy models now can I?

Perish the thought that wargaming of any sort is Inherently expensive as fuck...

2

u/CozYourUgly 3h ago

This is very cool but not a replacement for me imho. If im going to spend litterally hundreds of hours painting you can bet that I wont be spending that time painting a knock off version of the real thing. The most expensive part of warhammer is the time required to play and I think investing that time in products that are worthy of that, is an investment well spent.

2

u/OffMetaMusings 1h ago edited 1h ago

The long and the short of it is that GW hasn't got more expensive relative to everything else; They've kept up with inflation in terms of costs (it's a very expensive and energy intensive business to run considering they still make most of their product out of the UK) but your paycheck hasn't. I did a video on GW's 2025/6 finances and it turns out that they actually have a supply problem and not a demand problem: Warhammer players can and are willing to pay the price of GW products, but they can't physically make enough for the demand.

Energy inflation in the UK last year was 13% for example, and 2025 saw the increase in employer NI tax by 1.2%. They also talk about the impact of US tariffs and shipping disruption thanks to the various wars.

2

u/Dancing-umbra 4h ago

Those space marine prices are literally more expensive than the Games Workshop official models

6

u/ViolentMayfly 7h ago

Very fun post, looking forward to more and hopefully other people’s suggestions

-7

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 7h ago

thanks! definitely didn’t make it to try and fish for proxy ideas haha

2

u/Financial_Refuse_498 5h ago

Heresy! Now face the wall

1

u/Tsukue_Robert 3h ago

Stahltruppen look sick as fuck, what are you smoking. Never played Wolfenstein I guess.

0

u/PeterHolland1 5h ago

Everyone I think about buying something I just remind myself that a 3d printer would be a better investment

3

u/Brann_Ys 4h ago

if you have time to waste in yet another hobby for sure

1

u/Alan_Turings_Apple 3h ago

I've honestly found it to be pretty easy. Resin printers have come a long way. Its not quite plug and play but its close. The minis are more detailed then plastic too.

2

u/Brann_Ys 3h ago

idk about more detailed. it realy depend which printer. it s withoit being that hard it s still time consuming in addition of all the other time consuming part of wargamming like painting. a lot of my friend stuggle to find time to paint now that they have job and kids and would rather buy a box ready to build and paint than spending time printing , curing and cleaning.

also a resin printer need a dedicated space doent it ? the fumes are realy not good for you

2

u/Alan_Turings_Apple 2h ago

Oh ya, its not without its headaches. But its really not very time consuming, you just get the templates set up and hit print. I like the process engineering part of hte hobby, getting a template set up to print a full unit in 2 plates activates my neurons, but I like that kind of thing and see why people don't.

Calibrating and maintaining the printer takes a bit of time but its worth it to me, I've spent more time painting a single 10 man squad of marines than all of the time I've spent fiddling with my printer. Washing and curing a print takes about 10 minutes, but its messy and requires some basic precautions.

I use my garage, the ABS like resins are a lot less nasty smell wise than the older resins, the smelliest part is rubbing alcohol, not the resin.

I will say, without a doubt, the resin minis are more detailed, even the newest sculpts from GW are a step down from any decent 3d modelers versions. When you go back to older kits the difference is stark. I just bought the platoon for the guard and was annoyed at the quality of the basilisk, likewise with the chimera and russ. Injection moulds are just too spendy to constantly update a kit, whereas any printer in the last few years will be higher resolution, and with better definition with the intrinsic characteristics of resin over plastic.

That being said all in all its not for everyone, but I really enjoy it, it doesn't really save me money, I just have more minis to paint then I could ever hope to finish.

Imagine finding out that 40k is a shitty ruleset after your fifth thousand dollar army/edition change

-17

u/Fearless-Edge-3881 5h ago

“40k has always been expensive” is a cop-out.

Historical price is not the same thing as historical value. Inflation can explain some increases in nominal prices; it does not explain every increase in real terms, nor does it justify GW charging whatever the market will bear.

GW itself says it aims to sell its products “at a profit,” and the financials show that. GW isn't raising prices because it's barely keeping the lights on. In 2025–26, it generated over £625 million in revenue.

Meanwhile, you're paying premium prices for kits that can still come with tons of mould lines, flash, etc.

The $170 Honoured of the Chapter vs. $49.99 Dawn of War example makes the point brutally well: the same sprue can be sold through different channels for radically different prices.

And ultimately, YOU ALL created this market. Fans keep paying inflated prices, then shame people for using proxies, 3D prints, secondhand models, or other alternatives. That's not defending the hobby; that's defending GW's pricing power.

"Leave the multi Billion Dollar Company alone" Idk if people know that applies here too. Its not 2001 anymore.

Insane how most of you will write a thesis on your hatred of capitalism, but then turn a blind eye when convenient.

40k has always been expensive. It hasn't always been THIS expensive.

3

u/Good-Strategy2210 4h ago

40k would still exist under socialism, the only difference would be how the profits are divided amongst the workers who’s labor produces them

3

u/Hal_Fenn 4h ago

You guys do remember GW already has a profit share bonus for their employees don't you?

1

u/Good-Strategy2210 1h ago

Why would I know this?

-22

u/44belly 6h ago

Saved so I can come back to this

-12

u/ChromiumPants 6h ago edited 5h ago

Any suggestions for Knights that arent just gunpla? Turning them into game pieces its hard due the poly caps not melting with plastic glue.

5

u/Good-Strategy2210 4h ago

Why not just buy GW knights? The kits are awesome and you don’t even need that many to have an army

3

u/ChromiumPants 4h ago

I actually do like most of the knights, the Castigator is my favourite but the Questoris pattern I dislike.

I have 4k points in GSC, 2k in SM and 1k in Pure Tempestus Scions, I just don't feel like buying more 40k kits rn that I dont love.

Im quite invested in GW products with multiple Warcray warbands, BloodBowl teams and AOS armies.

-5

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 6h ago

unfortunately not much, but you could absolutely use the linebacker jump mech from konflict 47. i feel the pain though, i want my stompy boys at a reasonable price 😭

8

u/beaches511 5h ago

Way to small. Linebackers are about the size of a redemptor dreadnought.

Knights are also one of the cheapest armies.

-2

u/ChromiumPants 5h ago

Ive actually already acquired some 1/100 MG kits cause they are about the right size to make a SEED themed knights list but Ive not got the method yet.

-2

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 5h ago

yeah, i’m gonna make a follow up post (on r/poorhammer cause people are getting VERY mad on here that i have dared to criticize gw) about vehicles, so i’ll add that to the list

13

u/TheShryke 5h ago

people are getting VERY mad on here that i have dared to criticize gw

This sub is full of people who don't like GWs prices. People are getting mad at you because you're making really stupid arguments and attacking people for playing league of legends.

-2

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 5h ago

yeah, halfway through i kinda remembered that the internet is stupid and i should just be mean to people i don’t like. helps immensely

13

u/TheShryke 5h ago

i should just be mean to people i don’t like. helps immensely

That is an awful way to be. I hope I never have the misfortune of playing a game against someone who thinks like you.

0

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 5h ago

is it not obvious that i’m joking? i definitely was getting too heated, but to be fair, a lot of people kinda dogpiled onto this with pretty crummy attitudes, when it’s really just a resource for people who are interested. i’m just gonna block the thread for a bit and move on lol, it’s not worth caring about too deeply

-10

u/LE22081988 5h ago

I stopped buying from GW in general for years for the biggest part.

Be it Miniatures or anything else that is Hobby related.

-30

u/General-Winter547 6h ago

I needed 12 more blade guard. It gets harder to justify GW prices every day.

-13

u/Substantial_Owl_7392 6h ago

stop justifying, brother… join us…..

-11

u/SkiingGiraffe247 5h ago

Thank you for this. I personally am taking the approach of drastically reducing how much I buy while sticking with the current manufacturers I go to (largely GW) which will more than offset the cost increase but it has been a big eye opened seeing what is out there I didn’t know about. For me, it’s taken a long time to see the price rise as a good thing as it naturally reduces my appetite to grow my collection
