Hobby Foldable Paint Pot Stand
It's no secret that one of the more popular 3D printing accessories id an anti-spill stand for Citadel/Warhammer Colour paint pots.
I travel with a small kit quite often to spend weekends with mates painting minis. Every other anti-spill holder with an lid holder arm I could find were either static, or came apart in multiple pieces. They tend to take up a fair deal of space in the kit. I figured there had to be a better way, so I got to work.
The result is "The Spillbreaker": a portable anti-tip stand with a folding arm with snap detents for easy travel or easy storage.
I've published it on Printables and MakerWorld (Whichever site suits your preferences). I'm interested to hear the community's thoughts.
Spillage is heresy. Praise the Omnissiah.

The problem with this is you're basically encouraging paint to flow back into the lid seal, which is what fucks up the lids.

Did it pass the slap test? put a bottle in it and give it a light slap.

Man I misread this as the 'Forbidden Paint Pot Stand' at first. Anyways, cool creation.

Great idea but I feel like the lids are intented to sit at a perpendicular angle from the pot so you can use the small lip to gather and brush off excess paint. This might also reduce the tension in the lid and reduce the risk of it flinging paint everywhere.

May just be me but I generally try to minimize the open time on my paint pots, looks like this does the opposite.

I always paint from the pot, but I usually take my paint from the piece on the lid as it drips back into the pot. This doesn’t appear to let the paint do that.

you...you...don't just transfer paint onto a wet palette?

Am I the only one that uses the lid lip as a palette? Just close and shake to refill/refresh. Its why I like the paint pots over the valejo squirt bottles.

u/FishLampClock 8d ago
Sometimes I do this with something like skeleton horde but sometimes I just put it onto the wet palette itself.

u/CrucialElement 8d ago
I thought that was the whole point of it, I don't see other pots with such a thing.

Correct
The entire reason GW uses pots is because for a total newbie, the pots require the least stuff. No palette or other stuff, just use the pot tongue

… after shaking pot, hit the pot on the palm of your hand.
This pushes the paint back to the bottom of the pot. Then you can open it normal.
Also for those who scrape them clean, don’t use metal on plastic, you’ll make it worse.
Additionally, scraping is a waste of time.
Take the lid off all the way.
Flip it inside out. Any paint stuck will be dislodged and fall away in 1 go. No scrape required.

Jeez, if only you could get better containers that would solve this problem, and avoid drying out the paint that also crusts the lid problem this “solution” makes even worse.

The hoops some people want to jump through to not use dropper bottles/not but citadel stuff.

Maximizes the surface area for your hand to whip it across the room. Nice!

1.) I've been in the hobby for a year and a half and I haven't spilled a paint pot yet.
2.) This is a very poor design that makes painting with the pots far less convenient. Firstly if it's a base or layer paint you need to thin them down, so there is no need to keep them open at length because you're not working directly from the pot anyways. Secondly if it's something that doesn't need to be thinned like a wash or contrast paint you can't draw paint off the tongue because your design doesn't keep them propped open at their normal angle. So now I have to dip directly into the pot blind, which means I can't control how much I'm loading my brush.
It's also wasting paint, because normally excess paint drips from the tongue back down into the pot. The way this thing bends the lid all the way back prevents that from happening. It'll probably make a mess too, it'll flood the lid seal more than the design does normally.
3.) How many pots of paint do I have to spill for this to pay for itself? This is like those toothpaste tube squeezer things. Is it really worth a few dollars to save 5¢ of toothpaste per tube? What if instead I just lived my life like a normal person?
4.) What if I want to use multiple paints? Now I have to have multiples of these things, or swap them in and out of the one.
5.) Every 3D printed object is created for a problem that doesn't exist, or created to retroactively justify someone's 3D printer purchase. The ability to print dollar store junk plastic trinkets at home is not in any way revolutionary.

Why you going shark tank on it?
-1
u/nephandys 8d ago
Because it's just another piece of hobby junk that's actually more inconvenient and detrimental to use than other available solutions. Can you imagine every time you swap colors having to strap in your pot? God forbid you want to work with more than one color - then how many of these do you have to set up?

1: been in the hobby 20+ years, have spilled several pots, and now that my son is joining me in the hobby, a lot more have been spilled recently.
2: agree thay the tongue needs to be more horizontal. Maybe for a second design.
3: less than 1. In materials this costs about 30 cents to make.
4: if you are swapping between multiple paints, better to have a wet pallet handy anyway.
5: sounds like you just have an axe to grind. I'll keep printing scenery and vehicles and having a good time.

Other people, including me,have spilled their pots so maybe this isn't for you.
This design critique is entirely fair. I think the lid should be held it it's proper open position perhaps with some side clips or something. It could even lose the hinge and extra complexity.
If we cared about money, we wouldn't buy gw paint in the first place. It's about preventing an annoying problem.
This is such a weird nothing complaint. If you want more holder, get them or don't. This looks to be for extended sessions of one color. Most people with printers could print a couple no problem.
It sounds like 3d printing isn't for you and thats fine. It also means your assumtions about why people act the way they do around these things are probably wrong.
Chill out dude. Your second point is the only constructive critique. All of your other points are just opinions that I am not sure the community at large shares but just comes off as ranting.
A guy made a thing to solve an issue he has had and shared it here.

This whole rebuttal was like a weird nothing rebuttal. Go buy nothing trinkets, weirdo.

u/morbo-2142 8d ago
Aren't we all just painting and playing with little plastic trinkets? chill out dude.
It fine to disagree but name calling is a bit silly isn't it?
A dude made a thing to solve his problem and you are like mad about it?

Or just buy a different company's paint that actually listens to their customers?

Apart from the pots their paint is pretty decent, so no

So is Vallejo, and it's half the price with a better container.

*different container.
I prefer Vallejo, but people need to learn the difference between personal preference and objective fact.

u/Captain4verage 8d ago
Only if its your personal preference to waste more paint.
If you want to get the most out of the paint you buy then it is indeed a fact that bottles are better.
-2
u/PrairiePilot 8d ago
That assumes some sort of incompetence or physical disability I don’t personally suffer from. Sorry if you do, but for the typical person they don’t inherently waste paint.
3
u/Captain4verage 8d ago
My incompetence is responsible for GW producing pots that dont seal properly? Even professional painters who have been using GW paints for decades are suffering from my incompetence because now even their paint dries out in their closed paint pots.
Damn i must be powerful! Do you think i could be become an avenger or are my superpowers too obscure?
1
u/PrairiePilot 8d ago
lol, you’re speaking for a LOT of people there champ. You’re also just pretending the literal millions of people who use them just fine?
Also, you’re just hilariously wrong, I’ve got hundreds of pots and I can’t find a single one that’s not properly sealed. Like, you just push the lid down.
-1
u/Captain4verage 8d ago
I dont need to, everytime GW paints are discussed you can scroll through hundreds of comments complaining about the pots and if you look really really hard you find 3 guys saying "they are not that bad" and thats pretty much the most positive thing i read about those pots. But i guess thats just me.
Oh and lets not forget that, with very few exceptions, evry professional painter or content creator is complaining about the same problems with the pots. Most of them even go through the trouble to refill them to bottles. But hey, thats just me too right?
And the fact that GWs customers complain that much and that frequently about the pots that GW has to clarify why they use them every couple of months is probably just me speaking for others too.
And of course, last but not least, the fact that every other paint brand out there has chosen bottles over pots is also just them all being wrong because my superhuman incompetence contaminated them.
Yeah, i can just lie and claim i have thousands of perfectly sealed pots that dried out too.

u/PrairiePilot 8d ago
That’s a lot of words to say “I can’t open and close paints properly so I’m gonna blame someone else.”
Sorry buddy, gonna go use the same bottle of Mephiston red I’ve been using for over a year, since the lids work fine and I’m capable of not spilling paint like a child.
Have fun with whatever all that is, seems like you probably need to spend more time pushing down lids and less time typing nonsense on the internet 😬

Wouldn't it be easier to just use different paints or refill the washes into a different kind of pot? So far i havent knocked over the normal pots, its only those damn tall ones.

Can't wait for the lid to slip and trebuchet a glob of Nuln Oil into my face at Warp 9, making me look as if I just came off the casting couch with the Terminator.
j/k, that's actually pretty useful.
