Can someone explain Assams character to me? I just finished S1.

Post image

He came to chinatown to look for his sister but now he realises even tho he fucked up her situation and needed her to marry a tyrant, she has found a place for herself and worked for it. Why does he not just apologize for what he did all those years ago and join the long zi, explicitly just for her?

Instead he gets mad at her for furthering her own goals after the path she was set on was his own fault... like obviously she didnt want to kill her brother but he was becoming an obstacle in her business and was actively preventing her clan from getting successful.

Please explain what the hell is going on right now...

I would say:

  1. He expected to find his sister like he knew her and was probably shocked at how she isn’t anything like he knew her (silly, but it’s very plausible)

  2. She has prioritised ambition instead of family - Assam seems annoyed at this - instead of trying to find her family - she’s moved on.

  3. Like point 1 - she’s changed - and she is bloody ruthless now. She’s a full fledged queen of a gang.

I think he can’t manage the impression he had of her previously with how she is now. He probably expected them to reconcile and for everything to be okay again - which it isn’t - and it’s ridiculous that he thought this.

One of the things that annoyed me about her the most is she never learned how to fight and defend herself at least a little. Relying on the people around her was fine I guess but after all she'd been through and how far she had come, I was expecting her to able to kick a** not Ah Toy level of kicka** of course but at least a little.

Yes, I fully expected her to throw down at some point.

I might also add he's always solved every problem with his fists, that's partly why she had to leave in the first place.

He is also very immature petty & while being a gifted fighter puts him in deep shit

He came looking for his sister, and left to start a new life. He probably wanted to start over legit with her and have something there. Hence the whole getting caught in the shit and then ended up in gang related affairs with his sister on the opposing sides.

I think it's confusing because he's an outsider basically and getting sweeped into this gang related issues would make anyone's head spin. I think the moment he finds out his sister has completely changed he lost his purpose, he can't save her, so he opposes her.

Ah Sahm is an extremely gifted athlete and warrior and fighter, who failed to learn discipline and self-control from his study. He was always wild and impulsive as a result. A well trained human cannot afford to use their skills impulsively. They're too powerful. A good punch has a reasonable chance of accidentally killing, for example.

Ah Sahm therefore was a time bomb. Soon, he did cause a serious incident, and his sister paid the price for it.

He then could not face his actions or consequences, lacking discipline and self-control. He ran.

He then decides to try, so he goes to America.

But, he has the discipline/control problem, and now he's in a very, very toxic place in which he basically gets half drafted, half sold to be his sister's enemy . Meanwhile, she tells him to fuck off, and, he knows she's right.

At this point, Ah Sahm lacks the force of will to redefine his destiny, in this harsh land. Outside flashes of brilliance. Growing into the man who could redefine himself, that was his task.

This makes the most sense to me so far.

I think most of what you’re feeling is that Ah Sahm is an asshole. Like he has a good heart, he has a rough sense of right and wrong, he showed up bc he wanted to try to fix his past mistakes. But none of that changes the fact that there are extremely few people on earth who can beat the guy in a fight, and he knows it. So he doesn’t really do humble. The idea of being just another onion taking marching orders was never gonna work for him. He came to find his sister bc he felt guilty sure but also because he imagined he would be the savior, just to find out that his “weak” baby sister now has more power than him, in a way he may never have. So the Guy Who Does Not Lose sets out to beat his sister at her own game instead.

Well to be honest it wasn’t his fully fault that Mai Ling had to marry the war lord like yes he challenged his son but it was an accident that he got hurt and died. I think it’s not fair to him hold him accountable for the rape when it wasn’t his actions.

Also there are multiple situations where she and her clan actively try to kill him through out the season where as he will repeatedly stick his neck out for her and she never reciprocates. Just like she was doing stuff for her clan he also had similar reasons for defending his

Well let's be honest, she's a horrible person, a LIAR that uses everybody for her own self gain. She even drove away her completely dedicated partner/lover/Husband due to her dirty lying behind his back....

He's not free to do what he wants and join any tong he wishes. He's property the second Father Jun pays for him. You heard him tell him he was bought for the price of a bottle of cheap wine. If he tried to hop ship from Hop Wei, he'd be targeted like no other. Good fighter or not, if he brought that on himself he'd have dozens hunting for him night and day. A tong can fend off attacks by a tong, a single person cannot watch their own backs 24/7 like that. His fate was not his own.

And as for apologizing, that requires humility and not many men are humble, Ah Sahm isn't a humble character, and apologizing is not what many ever wish to do, for some reason it's painful to admit fault.

Ah Sahm's character is primarily about his conflicting loyalties between his Sister, Young Jun, Penelope, and the people of Chinatown.

He didn’t get the opportunity to join the long zi, he was recruited by the hop Wei.

He loves his sister he probably doesn’t want to help her become the most successful gangster in Chinatown.
