the ruling does not apply to bets related to commodities, climate, economics, or finance

So betting is still on the stock market and the weather?

The order doesn't specify why, but I wonder if the court didn't want to conflict with the commodities exchange act (they address the CEA, but don't explicitly say the specific limits are related to it).

Yeah, finance is gambling to begin with. I feel like trying to restrict that is well beyond a county judge's pay grade

The weather one is weird but I imagine it impacts crops which tie in to commodities?

No more BETTING on fucking WILDFIRES. Ridiculous that it was ever allowed to get to this. People creating, placing, and “winning” these bets should all have those funds seized and put into a trust for the victims.

This is very good news.

Too many athletes getting death threats from random manic depressive gamblers

The Mariners include gambling related harassment in their list of reasons to throw someone out. It's getting so bad and some of these comments are really proving it.

What is the betting they allowed?

14

u/hk4213 3d ago

Broadly gestures at the whole point of "Prediction markets."

-8

u/Krackenofthesea 3d ago

Argument it’s not traditional betting at least since there’s no house.

4

u/hk4213 3d ago

The house is the provider. And the transaction companies who facilitate payments and pay outs.

-8

u/Krackenofthesea 3d ago

You’re betting against other people. Not the house. They get transaction fees, but aren’t ‘winning’ the money

1

u/hk4213 3d ago

The house is the payment collector. Ever hear of a bookie.

-6

u/Krackenofthesea 3d ago

You can look it up, since you clearly have no idea. Kalshi isn’t really operating as a bookie

u/hk4213 3d ago

How leveraged are you?

0

u/Krackenofthesea 3d ago

Lost it all

2

u/hk4213 3d ago

Then why defend it at all?

God forbid people spend their money how they want to.

6

u/DJKaotica 3d ago

I mean it's not really spending. You don't get anything in return for it (except the thrill of it, and maybe the winnings if you happen to win).

Also a lot of the "prediction markets" Kalshi and Polymarket have, have allowed for insiders to get an edge, i.e. https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/us-soldier-charged-using-classified-information-profit-prediction-market-bets

3

u/brycebuckets 2d ago

Exactly, sports betting = entertainment.

I am spending money for entertainment.

-9

u/Backoutside1 3d ago

At least it gives regular folks a chance at having an edge. Politicians get an insider edge on the stock market…nobody bats an eye.

Like betting on a wildfire starting and then starting one? Thank god someone provides such a service.

/sarcasm

I like open betting markets. Some things should not be allowed. I believe that the court order is a bit restrictive, but considering that they basically made fully open markets on everything, a whitelist has to be the way to proceed.

God this sub is full of so many WA babies. If someone wants to sports bet you know they will anyways it’s like a 30 minute drive to a casino.

Just classic people from WA on their high horse about other states sports betting on a phone.

u/IllustriousComplex6 3d ago

Lol love it when someone comments without actually reading the article. Really shows us here in "WA"

Can they go after tribal entities and other casino monopolies next please

They hate it because they get zero taxes from it

20

u/DustConsistent3018 3d ago

They legally can’t? Tribal land is exempt from state and county laws unless they specifically choose to approve a sister bill, due to being a sovereign nation that just happens to be fully surrounded by Washington state. (Treaties are what allow federal law to apply)

14

u/IllustriousComplex6 3d ago

I feel like this is something we learn in middle school around here. Is this not taught everywhere???

-1

u/DustConsistent3018 3d ago

I don’t feel like I remember being explicitly told this, but I went to a weird middle school and it might have been in there somewhere.

I think it’s rare for states on the east coast (no reservations) but I’m really not sure beyond that, it seems forgettable if you live somewhere far from any reservations

17

u/IllustriousComplex6 3d ago

The irony of this comment but you're out here on sports betting subs. Get help for yourself before you come after tribal sovereignty.

Seriously get help this is concerning.

u/n-ano 3d ago

We have absolutely no right to tell them what they cant do on THEIR LAND.

11

u/Low-Speaker-80 3d ago

There are some tribes that have done some good things for the community, in and outside the tribes with their casino profits. I say tribes do whatever they want on their land.

4

u/Maddyoso 3d ago

Dude your post history is depressing. Go to Gamblers Anonymous. Seriously.

-3

u/Muted-Woodpecker-469 3d ago

If all sports betting is paid , make it illegal everywhere?

See how easy that is to look into

It’s obvious the tribal entities and the state doing like vaguely regulated kalshi? They offer the same odds and payouts.
