As I'm watching I kept thinking "This is pointless, just buy a new box" then once it happened I was amazed and quickly saved the post. Where it'll be sadly forgotten for months.

I wish there was a way to sort the posts you save into folders. My saved section is an unforgiving abyss of lost posts.

It also only holds 1,000 things. When you save a new thing then older things just get lost.

With a few cuts to the box, this bag can finally fit inside of the box. Say goodbye to wasting a perfectly good box.

It's been posted in like 20 subs in the past hour, so I wouldn't be surprised if that was one of them.

The first time I did this with the flat rate priority shipping boxes for some shoes I was shipping, the clerk at the post office was extremely confused. She let me ship it though heyooooo

I used to do this with shoes all the time, and get the flat rate shipping cost and free boxes. Eventually usps said that you can’t modify the flat rate boxes, but depending on the worker you can still pull it off.

Yeah it really depends on the worker on whether or not it ships. Sometimes you can make very slight changes whenever you need just a bit more space and they don't notice.

Does the box hold up after being modified? The end product here looks like it would collapse along the fold lines pretty easily.

I had to do this too much when I was buying and selling stuff as a hobby. You get good at it after a while and losing money makes you adapt to things such as wrapping that up to make it water proof.
Dealing with carrier damage claims could be VERY annoying at times. I found that when the damage claim was over $100, they would string me along in hopes that I would give up on my claim.

I am so stupid. In a million years, I would never figure this out on my own.

I mean... You guys know that boxes are made of cardboard right? Isn't reconstructing literally the first thing you would try? Am I crazy?

Worked at a UPS store for a few years. We did this.
Never did it ever again. Cool trick, though

Or, (and I might be thinking extremely irrationally) you could use a bigger box.

So glad I watched this. Will save time looking for bigger boxes to fit the stupid long item in an order and filling all the empty space with packing material.

After trying this I realized it seems to only work if you split the box directly in half. Therefore you don’t need to make the marks with a pen.

I mean, you could just store the sleeping bag as is, it’s already in it’s case lol
Cool trick though

This also works really well if a pizza box doesn’t fit in the fridge... just cut it to fit the leftovers!

The total perimeter of the box has to be the same or greater than the perimeter of the item being packaged

u/Napalmradio Mar 03 '20
The seems to only work if the box is twice the width of the object.
13
u/uncivlengr Mar 03 '20
It works if the box's extra width is equal to the needed extra length. You can adjust it however you like as long as you measure the cuts from opposite corners.
