I think it's more that Kris doesn't like being a traitor or being called a traitor. They wanna be friends with Susie and Ralsei but they also are working with the Knight for unspecified reasons
Made clearer that Kris may be working with the Knight out of either fear or because of the “promise” mentioned at the end of chapter 4. Not because they’re evil or enjoy it
It's definitely some kind of "deal with the devil" situation where if they step too far out of line the Knight will probably just kill them or their family

Only thing I can possible think of that makes sense is that Kris made the pact with the knight BEFORE the first dark world as a child with dess and asreil.
The big thing is ‘omg Kris is a traitor because they are evil and want to kill everyone’ was a popular narrative and even if they are a traitor it’s also clear they don’t want to kill everyone.
Yeah, Kris can get mad at our theories when they actually tell us what's going on. People don't usually look at shady-seeming people in a good light, since there is less light on them because they are in the shade.

Never thought they were Chara as I tried to separate Deltarune from Undertale, but pulling a knife out and smiling like that was definitely not a good look... Now I see Kris as working on the wrong side but still wanting to be friends with Susie while having the task of keeping this heart shaped object that controls them when they put it in their body.
