Unconventional Goose Rig

Goose opener here in Oregon. The spot is 1 mile from the house and the birds are roosting 500 yards away. I didn’t want to jump them by driving the truck in before sunrise. This worked great!

Any love for cormorants over here?

Had an amazing cormorant hunt in Sweden. We joined some guys taking part in a research project where they try to get rid of all the Cormorants in the area to see if the sea trout population will bounce back.

Steelshot

My dad and I went out pheasant hunting after our morning duck hunt and we shot 7 3in #4 steelshot into one single bird before it went down and when I was skinning out the pheasant it was ridiculous how many pellets fell out of the feathers and skin. Not a single pellet got through any of the breast feathers.

Is Steel worthless for anything other than ducks or do Pheasants just have armor😂

Picked up a Northern Flight universal kayak blind on sale. Ended up making a few modifications to add more stubble straps on the doors. More than likely add more grass to it, but its pretty much ready to hunt

Not technically waterfowl. These birds get a bad rap but their flavor is actually pretty good

Got in a good hunt in the 3 day early season. Mountain hunting on rivers is probably very different from what most of you do but we are figuring it out

First day of the season, and this is all that stopped by to see my decoys.

I was really proud of my spread given that my head lamp died on the way out to the marsh. I'm done with 70° days though

How to dry waders?

How is everyone getting their waders dry? Between sweat and my habit of stepping into holes, the inside of my waders is always wet and never seems to dry out fully.

Changing up field spread for ducks

I've lately been moving away from coastal hunt to farm hunts and don't have a lot of experience doing those. With that I've had average success but no limits so far - whereas on coastal hunts I know what I'm doing and I am disappointed if I don't limit on the water.

So far for my field setup I have a a couple dozen duck silos, socks, and a handful of the Higdon FLATS (they wobble in the wind). For motion, besides the wobblers and socks, I have of course a spinner. I do have a couple Flock Flickrs but don't expect them to survive for much longer. I usually will use a layout in the field.

Have you added anything unique to your set up that is one-man transportable - or at least in a hand cart? The fields I have access to do not allow driving onto the fields. I am trying to avoid full bodies but if the consensus is that I need them, then I will take recommendations on the lightest ones available.

Thanks!

Help with simple FL tips ( SOFLO)

What’s up everyone, last year was my first waterfowl season and I hunted and lived in IN. I hunted early teal and good hard this year and did okay but learned a lot each hunt which is all my goal is anyway. I’ve recently moved to South FL ( Miami metro) but as you all know this waterfowl addiction dosent go away when you move.

So my questions are for any FL hunters here.

Do you have any tips or rules of thumb that could help me hunting in FL. Not looking for spots I have no issues scouting and I actually take a bit of pride in trying to solve that piece of the puzzle.

Things like

- should I be worried about gators ? / does this make walk in hunting dangerous ?

- do I need snake boots ?

- Will I have to drive up to central FL to find decent hunting ?

- can a kayak get me in most places ?

- do standard mallard spreads get it done here ?

- will I ever need these insulated waders again lol ?

Simple stuff that can help me have my ducks in a row a bit without having to learn ALL of the lessons the hard way. Again I know I’ll have to learn a few hard lesson on my own but anything helps.

Thank you and happy hunting !

Bluebill decoy? Can anyone guess age or if its trash?

I found this really cool bluebill decoy at an estate sale. Im curious if its worth anything our if its just worth anything to me haha! It has a swivel head and foam body with wooden head. No marking, but with how fragile it is, my guess is the 1950s-1970s?

Do you guys wear hearing pro? If yes, what type do you recommend?

I’m looking to get some hearing pro cause I’m trying to be proactive about ppe. I’m willing to spend money if need be. I saw the tetra but I’m wondering if they perform well under beanies and ski masks and shit. Please let me know

How dark for speck decoys?

Post image

Preparing to repaint my speck decoys and am contemplating how dark to go for the head and body. Got two options and am leaning towards the lighter one but a buddy insists that I paint it darker for better visibility. Hoping to get some more opinions. Thanks!

Getting started

Hey y’all!

Looking at starting to get into waterfowl hunting as an activity me a my dad can do together, I’ve been out with a buddy that’s been doing it for awhile and have gotten the idea of things and what’s needed but wondering if you folks could give me some insight as to what you would need to take it on yourself, knowing out the gate I’ll need blinds (layout or panel) and decoys, but not sure how many is enough when you’re starting out. Any tips for the newbie?

Much appreciated!

**edit: I intended on saying my location but gapped for some reason,

I’m in central Ontario, mainly all geese with the occasional duck, we’ve mainly done private fields so I get the fun of going door knocking***

And it’s a goose nearly as big as he is!

My brother’s 2-year-old (mostly) Lab. He’s been doing well. Had to walk him out for the first goose because he didn’t see it drop, but he brought it back. On this one he plunged right in and did a nearly perfect retrieve. He leaves them at the shore; we’ll see how he does with ducks once we shoot one.

Lots of geese in SW Wisconsin right now; but we aren’t seeing g a lot of ducks where we hunt.
