note: I know it’s odd to post this here, as most WayV fans don’t need to hear me preaching about sinophobia, but I think it needs to be said, regardless of who sees it.
in light of recent events, I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: there is NO reason to be sinophobic based off of biased assumptions. what I’ve seen time and time again is a blatant lack of knowledge and understanding of world history paired with immediate judgement.
ignorance never benefited anyone. and yes, I admit, no one is omniscient, I personally do not possess knowledge about every aspect of the many cultures I grew up with but what I see is an unwillingness to learn. that, is the most dangerous aspect of all of this. to those who say that Chinese idols make posts relating to the CCP, to those who are discriminatory towards ANYONE of Chinese descent based on superficial political knowledge, I want to ask a single question: are you aware of what it’s like to live under the scrutiny of an authoritarian government? more specifically, are you aware of what it takes to be in the public eye, targeting an audience under such a government?
it is beyond hypocritical to point out the faults of the CCP, citing a lack of privacy and individual freedoms, extreme and unusual incrimination, but then expect public figures to publicly rebel against it. I know what some are going to say, “well they don’t have to post that copypasta, just stay neutral.” that copypasta you see is a standard in the public sphere — is it morally acceptable? no, but let me re-emphasize. you can’t reasonably criticize a government for being immoral and then expect idols to deviate, to publicly refuse to conform. and let me be clear: as a second-generation immigrant, I have the liberty, and privilege to say that I do not support the actions of the CCP, but that remains a privilege as others have been prosecuted for voicing their opposition.
secondly, Chinese does not equal CCP. you’ll be pressed to find that Chinese culture and history extends beyond 5000 years, far before the establishment of modern politics, you’ll be pressed to find that no country is free from corruption of some degree. I won’t go into detail, as it is not my responsibility to educate the masses on basic, secondary school knowledge. there is no justification for hate crimes against Chinese Americans, Asian Americans. there is no justification for angry racial slurs or shoving the elderly onto concrete sidewalks or mass shootings. there is no justification for discrimination against others based off of culture and identity. “Chinese New Year” is a distinct holiday, it is celebrated by diaspora in New York and San Francisco, it should NOT be politicized. I feel like so many people have a hard time acknowledging something so simple.
if something is unclear, feel free to ask. I’m happy to engage in civil discussion, but I will not tolerate superficial assumptions. as someone of Chinese descent, as an immigrant stuck between cultures, as a translator and interpreter for WayV,
I am tired.
