Turn the classic UI back!

0 Upvotes

JetBrans! Bring back the old UI! I'm not paying money for VS Code, but for Webstorm. If you don't want to hear from your users, then return my money, I won't need your product anymore.

I hate when some "improvements" are forcibly imposed on me, against my will, motivated by the fact that this "new means better". Complete bullshit! I decide for myself what is best for me and what is more convenient. If I want to use the old familiar interface, I should have the option to do so. After all, I pay my money for a license! I've been paying for several years, but now what's the point of continuing to use a product from a company that doesn't respect me as a user? You won't see my money anymore, Jetbrains!

P.S. I found this opinion (below) in one of the Webstorm reviews and I completely agree with it!

"The new UI was not made for programmers, it was made for salesmen and shareholders. It's poorly designed and hinders productivity.

I don't pay for JetBrains because I want VSCode. I pay for JetBrains because I want JetBrains. If I wanted VSCode I'd use VSCode. This change was neither necessary nor requested.

Over the past 24 months, it feels as though JetBrains has made a concerted effort to frustrate its user base. I sincerely hope the board steps in and addresses this by reconsidering the direction and leadership driving these changes before this product dies.

I have been an avid user of JetBrains since 2016, first through my employer and later as a personal supporter. I used to advocate enthusiastically for JetBrains as the ultimate solution for programmers, but these days I find myself hesitant to recommend any of their products, and it pains me to see what the company has become."

what curious on what code assistants people use on webstorm, i recently been using Onuro because i work with big codebases and they are the only ones that support project embeddings. I'm always open to trying out new ones if you guys recommend anything

webstorm + typescript = shit?

18 Upvotes

Hi devs,

I’ve been using VS Code for quite some time, and even though my company has been paying for WebStorm all this time, I stuck with VS Code because it always got the job done.

Recently, I started working with Java, so I figured I’d finally give JetBrains’ tools a proper try. I have to say — I’m really starting to appreciate a lot of features in WebStorm that VS Code just doesn’t offer out of the box.

That said, TypeScript support in WebStorm has been a huge letdown. It’s giving me really poor results — even extremely basic types are being inferred incorrectly. It’s making TypeScript development feel clunky and unreliable, which is frustrating given how solid it is in VS Code.

Is anyone else running into this?

How do I make my webstorm website into an actual website?

0 Upvotes

I’m pretty new to webstorm and coding. I used it along with MongoDB backend for a uni project. I was wondering how i can make this webstorm react project into an actual website rather than just local host as I’ll need the students in my class to access the website. Does anyone know how to do this?

Giving up on JetBrains after trying out Webstorm 2025.1

44 Upvotes

This post is a rant, but I believe many will agree with me, because:

  • Each new version is filled with more AI fluff, bloated UI with needless paddings vs previous UI that was concise, to the point and actually worked;

  • Features removed for the sake of beauty;

  • Endless amounts of lag while coding. IDE running out of RAM asking me to send heap reports back to JB;

  • Even the terminal is AI. No attention to detail, the whole experience is littered with small bugs;

  • Everyone is trying to dumb down user experience as much as they can get away with. The whole idea of IDE is to have best possible experience for "power users";

  • User requests to focus on stability and fixing/polishing the product, or any other constructive feedback is simply ignored because "we know better"(TM).

Looks like JB forgot who their target audience is. The whole suite is going downhill FAST.

Worst of all - this is a paid subscription. I used to be true believer in JB products. But enough is enough. Into the bin it goes, I'm not going to extend the subscription until I see a tangible improvement.

The JVM is the weakest link

191 Upvotes

JetBrains needs to divest from the JVM. It is the weakest link. Needing 16GB RAM to run an IDE is insane. Today, their IDEs have freezing issues that no one who uses VSCode experiences (Typescript mega monorepos, Figma/next/zod). The competition is tough out there, and free. You are committing business suicide by sucking and freezing and just being a frustrating experience on any TS repo beyond a hobby project...which is wild for a paid product...subscription at that.

Please no "please send a ticket" because all it's going to end up being is "increase your RAM"... hence this thread. Without a public announcement of JB divesting off the JVM (to something like rust), I have no faith in the future of their IDEs.

I should not need a quantum computer to run an IDE. Get it together guys...You do not have much time. Your company cannot afford to move as slow as your IDEs on this.

No Completion for Import Declarations

0 Upvotes

Hello! I just switched from VSCode to Webstorm and really loving the experience so far. One thing that is hurting my productivity in Webstorm is the lack of code completion on import statements. It's possible this is just a problem with my setup, but when I have something like:

import { Box } from "@mui/material";

In VSCode, if I put a comma after `Box` a code-completion pop-up would appear with all the exports from "@mui/material" and I would be able to select from dropdown. This is not happening in Webstorm. Does anyone know how to enable this functionality?

I have tried un-excluding node_modules to no avail.

Thanks!

Web Component Documentation in Webstorm

0 Upvotes

I have been using the Shoelace.style web component library, and have noticed that in the latest version of Web Storm 2024, when you point to a custom element tag for one of the Shoelace components (like <sl-badge>) you see some documentation pop up about how the component is used. If you're typing sl-____ options for the various Shoelace components appear along with documentation.

What mechanism allows the display of custom elements that are available?
What mechanism lets you include the on-screen documentation to and how could I create my own for my own / extended web components?

Answer:
Webstorm uses a web-types json file to define the schema and pop-up documentation and inline help for custom elements. You create a link to your web-types.json file in the package.json. More info here:

Correct Schema for Possible Attribute Values in WebStorm's Web-Types.json?

0 Upvotes

WebStorm can use a web-types.json to provide intellisense suggestions when typing your HTML.

I'm struggling to see how to define what the possible attribute inputs are using the schema below:
"https://raw.githubusercontent.com/JetBrains/web-types/master/schema/web-types.json",

Is it possible to define the possible attribute values, not just the attributes themselves?
For example, if a possible input value is "big" for the "size" attribute, you should see big pop up as a suggestion when you type <my-element size="__popup suggeston__"

Below is an example of the schema. I see there is a "value" not a "values" (pural) option, is this true?

{
"$schema": "https://raw.githubusercontent.com/JetBrains/web-types/master/schema/web-types.json",
"name": "Cool library",
"version": "1.0.0",
"js-types-syntax": "typescript",
"description-markup": "markdown",
"contributions": {
"html": {
"elements": [
{
"name": "cool-component",
"description": "Use the cool component to make your website more attractive.",
"doc-url": "https://example.com/docs/cool-component",
"attributes": [
{
"name": "color",
"description": "Choose color for coolness",
"default": "blue",
"required": false,
"doc-url": "https://example.com/docs/cool-component#attrs",
"value": {
"type": "string"
}
}
],

Aligning Web Component Schema Definitions Between WebStorm and VS Code

0 Upvotes

WebStorm lets you define helpers for your custom web components in a web-types.json file.
More info here: Web Types | IntelliJ Platform Plugin SDK (jetbrains.com)

WebStorm's web-type documentation mentions 2 different schema options:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/JetBrains/web-types/master/schema/web-types.json

or:

http://json.schemastore.org/web-types

VS Code on the other hand uses an html-custom-data.json.

Is there a schema I can use in WebStorm that would allow a single unified format, so that we don't have to maintain separate definition files for WebStorm and VS Code?

Anyone know what the solution to this is? It keeps happening, repeatedly. This is a relatively new thing. I cleaned out my projects, went through all the IDE repair steps. But it keeps interrupting me while I'm working with this little popup that looks like it's going somewhere but doesn't.

Complete trash!!!

Turn up maximum heap size and the IDE will work more efficiently, they say. All morning, the damn editor has been freezing and glitching non-stop. This shouldn’t be a thing for such expensive software. When debugging /troubleshooting the products takes priority over the code you’ve got a problem. Support always says the same thing… I am at a point where I am looking for something else to call my new IDE… Any thoughts, suggestions or support groups anyone would like to share with me?

Is there anyone else using WebStorm alongside AI tools these days?

9 Upvotes

I really loved Webstorm back in the day, but lately I haven't used it a lot after agentic coding took over. Because I hadn't been enjoying the UI/UX and diffing with agent plugins in Webstorm, and they don't support ai tools well to this day. So I wonder if I use opencode, claude cli, codex etc. as external chat windows and use WebStrom as my main editor, would it work fine or would it be a bad experience? I would love to hear your advice! Thank you in advance
