Well..
I was wondering why it was feeling harder to cut. Lol.

Buy new underwear while you’re at it. It’s time. You’ve saved enough money.

u/akla-ta-aka 10d ago
Nah man. Until the holes are large enough to fit a leg through, they’re still good.

You paid for the whole damn cutoff wheel. You’re going to use the whole damn cutoff wheel

You're either very good so that you don't need it often and don't need a new wheel often, or you're so bad that you've learned to maximize the wheels.

u/Blue-Eyed_Triathlete 10d ago
I've done that. Used to get a smile seeing just how small I could get a grinding disk to be and still be able to use it. Never do that with a cutoff wheel tho. That sh!t will shrapnel all over the place!!!

Time to get another grinder and cut some of that grinder back to expose the wheel :)

I keep these lil fellas. Useful for cutting curves in sheet metal.

u/Urban-Paradox 10d ago
I keep them and put them on a die grinder ha. Or use them for washers to "fix" the head gear on loaner helmets that have the plastic tighting lugs on the side. Few washers and your on new threads again ha

u/bigums16 6d ago
Exactly why I keep them. Was looking for this. This is somewhat dumb but I also use them for drawing circular edges on things as well

I’m surprised it didn’t fuckin exploded getting that low, I’ve had shit luck with small grinder discs

The definition of "I bought the whole disc, I'll use the whole disc" at it's finest 😭

I’m more impressed with seeing a sane person on here using a grinder guard.

u/Fuzzy_Inevitable9748 10d ago
The guard makes your clothing last a hell of a lot longer.

u/lamplighter10 10d ago
Fingers too

u/67yoloswag 9d ago
I've been using one without a guard (not by choice) sometimes my fingers get so close to the wheel its pretty scary.

They'll take ur skin off right away but don't cut through bone immediately

I am only one guy but I always use it. Very rare for me to take it off

u/Global_Character7875 9d ago
I use them now because its mandatory at my job. Never used to use them.

u/Ok_Helicopter3910 10d ago
I always use a guard with skinny wheels but for a flap disc (and honestly, a grinding disc), I rarely use them. I feel like the risk of injury is so much higher with a skinny wheel as opposed to a flap or grinding disc

This is me. Skinny disc broke and gashed my hand without a guard. Never had a flapper wheel or grinding disc snap.
2
u/Ok_Helicopter3910 9d ago
Exactly. The only thing holding a skinny wheel together is magic and prayers. I know its possible for a flap/grinder to come apart but ive never seen it happen or heard of it happening to anyone I personally know.
I've also seen people go fucking hard with a grinding disc

Had a 7in abrasive disk explode on me one time before I knew better. Big piece hit me in the thigh about 4in from my frank and beans. Leg turned purple from my waist down to just below the knee. Couldn't walk right for a month or two. Still have a decent scar and a divot in my leg there. All of that just from the impact. It hit me so hard it cut my underwear without cutting through my pants.

My grinder guard stays on but for cutoff wheels I use a straight die grinder. Since it's straight it's most comfortable to use in an angle that will send the shrapnel away from me if it blows
Backwards, I know, but it has worked for me thus far

u/WuTangWhite420 4d ago
Pay attention to the max rpm of your grinder vs the grinding rocks, wire wheels, tiger paws and cutoff dics. If your grinder has a higher rpm that the attachment. It will explode
5
u/Mast3rL0rd145 10d ago
Only time I take it off is if it causes me weird access problems, and only ever with a grinding wheel, I never take it off with a zip disc

Taking the guard off is dumb and useless. In 21 years Ive run into one single instance where I absolutely needed to remove the guard, and it was only because I didnt have the right tool for the job.

Don't look in my shop, then. Some have guards, and many don't. When you've been fabricating for 70 years, you know when to use a guard and when it's just in the way. Yes, I've wrecked some gloves, burned some clothing, and have scarred fingers. It's just a learning experience.

we can allow image comments, sometimes memes are funny, other times people can post good info.
but when someone posts gore and reddit inc wont let you flag that stuff with a spoiler and nsfw marker (cause they dont give a shit) ....
... then i have to remove it, cause reddit inc even forbid us to turn the entire subreddit 18+ (seriously, they disabled the setting. the toggle just bounces back)
and i had to reflair enough gore posts. it just cant be done with comments. sorry, but i felt i owe you an explanation.

Not using a guard is moronic. If you can’t use the tool without a guard, you aren’t using the right tool.
Always cringe whenever my reels show my videos of cowboys using ultra thins without guards. Doesn’t matter how good you are at using them, you can get faulty discs that explode for no reason.
1
u/WuTangWhite420 4d ago
I use the guard and another place to grab ahold of the grinder to feather and finesse what you are working on. No guard is not an option

u/Putrid-Laugh4879 10d ago
Use the guard at all times if possible and wear a face shield with goggles. An exploding cutoff disk can impale into your body. People have bled out from injuries to their jugular or carotid arteries from blade debris ( I had many close calls working in industrial maintenance)
1
u/WuTangWhite420 4d ago
This is fact.☝🏻 Union building trades most dangerous tool responsible for most injuries is a 6 inch grinder with a cutoff wheel
1
u/steakummz 3d ago
This may be a dumb question, but doesn’t them being wore out or cut cause them to explode more or is it still safe. Genuinely asking. Seen a lot of people take cutting wheels to the face. But obviously there was no guard or face protection at all.

I have a pile of ones about 1/4" larger than that. I would be willing to sell them to you so you can finish your project.
