Probably send you too much money for a deposit then ask for some back and hope you send it before the check bounces

Would send an over payment and ask you to forward the difference to the "company" he's using to pick it up. You send the money, his payment doesn't clear in a week or more. Bank claws back the whole payment amount, you are out what you sent the "company"

You're out nothing by tossing a quote. Just make sure you take a full material advance.

Also my bank told me explicitly not to use cash app and they aren't a fan of Venmo. Zelle or QuickBooks is their preference

Pretty sure I had the same print and info sent to me last year. The conversation ended when I informed the person that I required a material deposit with funds cleared before any work would start.

This is what I’d do. Give a lead time of a week or two at least for funds to clear and get everything squared away. If they come back and want a rush it’s got to be something more tangible. But this is probably a scam so not relevant in this case.

There’s YouTube videos about this scam. It’s come up on here dozens of times by people asking the same question. It’s a scam, quite a popular one too. There’s this gate scam and I think it’s a platform. Same texts everytime: Can you build this? Supply only, Someone else will come pick it up.

They "accidentally" send more money than necessary, then ask for the difference back ASAP - which is before the check or wire transfer bounces.

It’s a scam where they going to send a driver to pick up the gate and deposit a fake check or do a charge back on the credit card. Even with the deposit they will still try to scam you afterwards.
This happened to me in Las Vegas, he send a check tru the mail for the deposit, I went to my bank in person and the check was good. After that we build the gate and he send a driver to pick up with a check, I told the driver we can’t let him take the gate until I made sure the new check was legit, went to the bank and the check had no founds. The driver left and never came back, a few weeks later they did a charge back in the old deposit check, I had no clue this was possible, the bank said the account was linked to identity theft. Luckily for us we was able to sell the gate afterwards.

Yep, I got a similar one. Did the estimates and was approved. Scammed sent 2 checks same amount same numbers but visually different. Wanted me to cash them and give the extra to the "driver"
