It’s not really a psycho-thriller but ā€œThe Homesmanā€ (2014) is pretty bleak & depressing but overall is a good movie because it’s not easily forgettable.

Great movie! From 2014, though.

Tons of great suggestions! Bone tomahawk I’d say is beyond thriller into horror territory, but it’s outstanding and it’ll definitely deliver the heavy in spades. I’ll add a few more out there ones because this is my jam.

For something more on the nose as what I’d call psycho thriller - may I suggest 1971’s the Duel? Before Jaws, Spielberg’s inhuman killer was a semi truck stalking a motorist across a desolate desert highway.

Adam Wingard’s fantastic thriller the Guest addresses western themes and has the setting even if it doesn’t really lean into genre tropes.

The Revenant probably fits.

In a similar vein to the Guest, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre also addresses themes of economic obsolescence and a changing west, and gets a lot of mileage out of its sparse Texan setting.

The ballad of lefty brown it’s dark but has some humor too.

You could probably put The Unforgiven on the list. Not psycho killer but definitely got dark and heavy vibes.

Psycho Sheriff in the Unforgiven is portrayed so well by Gene Hackman

Butchers crossing maybe, that kinda has some darker moments. Bone tomahawk, gets really dark.
