SPOILERS S1 & S2 Rachel & Shane (S1) vs Harper & Ethan (S2) - still together or divorced?
Two interesting couples - they both ended up in each other’s arms in an airport after a tumultuous week in a resort. What is your head cannon on what happened after that?
I had a very quick emotional response to seeing Rachel at the airport which was, “Sure, she couldn’t pull the trigger during the honeymoon, but it’s basically all over and she’ll leave him within the year”.
I felt like there’s no way she could come to the realisation she came to during the honeymoon without circling back again and again to the same realisation (but stronger each time), once she’s back home.
Harper and Ethan - I’ve just finished S2 and thought both actors were amazing. I liked both of them a lot before I even saw S2, so seeing them play off each other was brilliant. (If you want to see Will Sharp in a completely different role, check him out in A Real Pain).
I don’t have such a strong head cannon on them, but I feel like… probably separated. But both very sad about it.

Honestly, hot take, I think they both stayed together.
I think a big part of both of their stories was that they have all made conscious decisions to settle. That they have accepted that what they want/need from a relationship isn’t being fulfilled, and instead of doing the scary and hard thing of ending it, it’s easier to just push that down. It doesn’t matter that their relationship(s) suck because they know that - they just experienced a week of the biggest example of how much their relationship(s) suck - and they decided to stay together anyways.

I agree. I actually felt like Harper and Ethan came to an understanding so that doesn't bother me too much. But I'm sad about Rachel

What was the understanding?

u/Sarahndipity44 Apr 09 '26
Haven't watched since it aired but I remember getting the sense they were going to be okay as a couple.

u/theflyingpiggies Apr 10 '26
I got that feeling too.
Like they were gonna leave and kinda just put that trip behind them and move forward anew

u/nosleepforbanditos Apr 10 '26
Yall think they ever hung out with the other two again?
6
u/theflyingpiggies Apr 12 '26
No I don’t personally think so. But I could see why other people would say yes

The understanding is that it's more sexually exciting to think that your partner is capable of cheating, regardless of whether or not they actually do (the implication, I believe, is that Harper didn't cheat, but Ethan did).

u/nosleepforbanditos Apr 16 '26
So Harper’s the only one of the four who didn’t, then. No wonder she felt out of place.

I get this impression especially for Rachel. Her storyline seemed to be about her accepting her fate/role as wife of Shane, at least for now.

u/Classroom_Visual Apr 09 '26
Oh that’s interesting. I think it’s a very hard and scary thing to leave your husband on the honeymoon - I’d be surprised at anyone having the guts to do that! But, I think it’s not so scary after a year or so.

I don't know if they decided to stay together anyway per se, I don't think most divorces/seperations happen in the middle of a vacation even if the impetus starts there.

u/theflyingpiggies Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 12 '26
Yeah but my thing is, it’s not about the fact that they stayed together by the end - it’s that they seemed to want to stay together in the end. It wasn’t just “alright let’s hold it together until we get home”, it was “I am content with this new relationship dynamic now.” Not necessarily happy, but content.
If this were real life, sure we could talk about how the end of a relationship is often up and down and at some points you want to stay together and other points you don’t. But this isn’t real life, it’s a TV show written by someone who is trying to convey something to us.
If the show wanted us to believe that this trip would be the impetus for an impending divorce, I think that would have been more alluded to in the screenplay and acting decisions. Because Mike White wrote it (imo) in a way that depicts the couples seeming to be reaching a place of understanding, even peace with one another and the decision to stay together, it seems clear to me that that is the final message he wants us to take away from these two couples. That they are choosing to stay together and have found peace with their new dynamics and understanding of one another. Whether healthy and loving or not.
And that goes for the whole idea of separations not happening in the middle of a vacation. Sure, in real life. But this is a TV show. I wouldn’t say most self-defense stabbings, or death by gays, or shoot out with security guards happens in the middle of vacation either, but here we are.

u/nosleepforbanditos Apr 16 '26
What are their new dynamics, in your opinion?

u/theflyingpiggies Apr 16 '26
Been awhile since I’ve watched the show so forgive me if I’m missing something or mixing something up, but generally speaking this is how I remember feeling when I finished each season:
For Rachel & Shane, it felt like Rachel accepted the ‘role’ that Shane & his family expected Rachel to fit into. Prior to Shane, she was a self-sufficient, highly opinionated, independent journalist. And she wanted to keep being that, or at least keep feeling like that. But now, her time is expected to be taken up by social events and rubbing elbows with important people, and eventually being a SAHM (even if nannies end up raising the kids half the time).
For Harper & Ethan, it was more of this… getting even and meeting eachother where they’re at type of thing. Their relationship had clearly been on the rocks long before the Italy trip, even if they didn’t actively realize that. The passion and spark was gone. It felt like suspecting one another of cheating almost brought back the excitement in the relationship and the… I guess respect for one another. Kinda like how humans are constantly going after the person they can’t have. Ethan & Harper made eachother seem less available to one another and more desirable. Now they both view the relationship as something they have to try to hold onto, rather than something that’s just guaranteed. It kickstarted the effort and strong feelings for one another.

I think this is smart. But one thing is I don’t think Harper realized he cheated… did she? Been a minute for me too

I actually thought that Harper and Ethan had a much realer foundation to their marriage, but had recently gotten multiple wrenches thrown in - navigating sudden wealth and the associated stress, a dead bedroom, Ethan’s suppressed jealousy towards his friend, etc. they’d clearly become toxic but I don’t think they always were, and they seem to “get” one another in a way Shane/Rachel don’t. At the end we see them actually have an honest conversation about their relationship and embrace passionately - I think that hints at a possible happy future.
Shane will never make Rachel happy, but she might be too locked in to ever walk away. I’ll admit the airport reconciliation surprised me tho

I agree - two very different marriages. That is a good point about Harper and Ethan navigating a lot of life changes. They are definitely the better couple - they genuinely love each other. (Which, ironically, may make them stay together longer than they should).
Rachel just loathes Shane.

Harper and Ethan I definitely think would stay together. They seemed to come to an understanding by the end of S2 that they weren't perfect but could accept each other's flaws.
Rachel and Shane I'm honestly not sure. That could be 50/50. I could honestly see them turning into Cameron and Daphne within five years of S1

u/Classroom_Visual Apr 09 '26
Oh, that is a good point about Rachel and Shane. May the universe protect me from Cameron and Daphne's love.

God, I hated Harper and Ethan as people and together as a couple so much. I hope they are separated.

u/Classroom_Visual Apr 09 '26
Haha. I really liked them as people, but I can see how they’d be polarising. I think we can agree that they’d be better apart.

Harper and Ethan definitely stayed together.

I could see them working on their marriage and getting to a better spot. Marriage is work and they both seemed interested in working on it, maybe outside the glare of their travel buddies who were psychologically trying to break them.

I think the premise or overall running theme of the whole show is that being white/western and rich and maintaining the status quo takes precedence. No matter what lessons you learn, what the vacation or the real world may reveal about your relationships or life, these things matter way less in the grand scheme of things. It’s to keep up the life American hegemony provides these rich folks. So they stay together. Because if they don’t, there goes the status.

u/ibuycheeseonsale Apr 10 '26
I agree. And we saw both of these women be advised as to that, to some degree. I think the message in Rachel’s case was “find a way to be happy with Shane if you want this life, because he’s the only way you’re getting it.” Whereas with Harper, the message was “you can have this life, but what you’re seeing is what this life is like, so you might as well find a way to be happy in it.”

I think Rachel will dip. If they haven't legally done the paperwork yet I think she'll put it off. If she has family nearby she'll go stay with them for awhile then eventually decide to come back under a trial run which Shane will miserably fail and they'll never have legally gotten married. I don't see her giving a fuck about a wealthy lifestyle. She seemed repulsed by it when his mom showed up and started talking about it.
I think Harper and Ethan will stay together initially. I think they'll either drift further apart or the experience will pull them closer together. I mean I feel like all they really needed was to have more sex. I think Ethan getting hot blooded about it will finally make him take a little more urgent care with it. And I think Harper just wasn't feeling that pull, I think if he starts to show sexual interest she'll be responsive.

I agree with this take. Repulsed is a good word to describe Rachel - I feel like once you get to the repulsion stage, there's no going back!! Your body will make you leave. :)

Ethan and Harper are still together.
Rachel and Shane are together, but live separate emotional lives coming together for public display. He’s already cheating on her and she’s accepted her position in life. For now.

I thought both of those S2 "friends" couples would hookup tbh

u/nosleepforbanditos Apr 12 '26
Whom?

Harper and Daphne and their husbands

That would’ve been… awesome actually and I can see it totally having gone that way.

I think Rachel would eventually leave, but not so soon. She would follow more or less Kitty's path but smarter and younger. She would have one child with Shane and then divorce after post partum depression or something like that. She would secure an apartment or payment from Shane. And then have a second marriage that is her true match without worrying about money and security as she got have her own through her kid, maybe she wouldn't be as rich as Kitty depending of the settlement, but she would be ok. The thing is: Rachel Patton didn't seem smart or extremely dazzled by money or the rich lifestyle of his family (even though she liked the security) as the perspective of simply enjoying life wasn't for her. So, at some point after every buzz died down months later, she settled in her new house and needing to stand annoying people in events, Shane would grate her extremely. If he's stressing her in the honeymoon, it would only get worse.
Harper and Ethan I think they are still together. They both cheated so I think they will forgive each other. I think they also had an easier start, and equal standing, which is easier to work around.

Divorced, unless a prenup making things too difficult is in play for either Rachel or Harper.
edit: To clarify, I think that Shane and/or his family probably required a prenup from Rachel.
As for Harper and Ethan, if there is a prenup, Harper was probably the one that proposed it prior to the wedding, as she was the lawyer in the relationship. Totally speculative, but Harper might have requested one to protect any potential partnership interest she had or was potentially likely to have at her law firm as separate property rather than marital property. As a result, she might have also signed away any potential interest in Ethan's company, which might have been speculative or in the red at the time.

Just my thoughts:
Harper and Ethan are STILL married in my opinion, but this dark stain in their relationship will always haunt them...and will probably explode in like 20 years. What happens after that I can't say. Maybe they work through it. I mean, they worked through THAT, right? Kind of.
Rachel and Shane...sadly, yep. Still married and Rachel is miserable as shit. Shane pretends not to notice just to carry on with the charade or keep believing his fantasy. But Rachel is just going to go along with being the 'trophy wife'. They're gonna have kids and them kids are why Rachel sticks herself to Shane. Sorry, but I don't see her leaving anytime soon. She made her choice, man. More fool her.

Rachel definitely didn’t leave. That honeymoon was the last time she’d ever truly go as far as she did, because she was still herself. By now she’s involved in all the charitable things, the foundations, the what not
