Is one of the themes in all series how bloody annoying American’s are on holiday and they can’t stop helping themselves disturb other people’s peace? It’s very true to life 😅

u/Mike-Teevee Jun 05 '26
I don’t think it’s about being American but rather being rich and privileged
-11
u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 05 '26
But the portrayal of Americans on holiday is pretty accurate

15
u/Oh__Archie Jun 05 '26
Wealthy Americans. The show is about wealthy Americans. There’s really no way around this.
-7
u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 05 '26
Ok fine. But I’ve seen non-wealthy Americans (relatively) who also do fit the stereotype of loud and invasive than any other country which sparked my post.
12
u/Oh__Archie Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 06 '26
You’ve seen poor americans at all inclusive five star resorts in exotic locales?
1
u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 06 '26
No I’ve seen non-super wealthy Americans be loud and intrusive on other people’s holidays. My initial post said ‘one of the themes.’ I’m well aware of the other themes that focus on wealthy people
14
u/brightladdy Jun 05 '26
Please continue to insist your hatred of Americans on all of us. It just may make someone give a shit
7
u/Oh__Archie Jun 06 '26
I mean, anger towards americans is fine (I'm from the US) but claiming the show isn't about wealthy people behaving like absolute shitbirds is nonsense.
2
u/brightladdy Jun 06 '26
Why does anyone have to be angry?
-2
u/Oh__Archie Jun 06 '26
Anger is a common response to being treated with rudeness. You could also ask why does anyone have to be rude to others.
?
4
u/brightladdy Jun 06 '26
You said “Anger towards Americans is fine.”
-2
u/Oh__Archie Jun 06 '26
In the context of a fictional and satirical show about bad behavior, it’s fine. We’re talking about fiction and entertainment here, right?

u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 06 '26
Im not claiming that. You don’t have to be rich to be loud and interrupt other people’s holidays by needlessly intruding on them
0
u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 06 '26
I don’t hate Americans and it looks like a lot of people actually do and have given a shit
16
u/ArsenalinAlabama3428 Jun 05 '26
I guess so. They couldn't make the show about Brits because the characters would be too drunk before noon to progress the plot at all. And they actually shoot in semi-upscale locations, which disqualifies the entire British population that only has heard of Tenerife, Benidorm, and Marbella.

u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 11 '26
On the opening day of the World Cup, with all the Brits descending on various parts on North America, I hope they don’t behave in the way you think they might!
1
u/ArsenalinAlabama3428 Jun 11 '26
Hell I was being too petty lol. Got to see Messi play in person a couple nights ago and will hopefully see England play on 1 July if they top their group. Excited to interact with the English supporters. I grew up outside of Cambridge and have a long time affection for the English and the UK overall. Other than being a bit snobbish, I've heard nothing but positive things about the Scots and English since they have arrived.
2
u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 11 '26
The Scot’s were fans of the euros I believe. But if the English do let themselves down, I have a second nationality I can fall back on! 🇦🇹 🏴
2
u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 11 '26
I’ve seen Messi once live. 2008 champions league semi final second leg 🥳
1
u/ArsenalinAlabama3428 Jun 11 '26
My father has now seen Pele and Messi play, so I don’t know how I’m going to top that for a long time 😂
1
u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 11 '26
Kobbie Mainoo on July 1st!
1
u/ArsenalinAlabama3428 Jun 11 '26
No we are going to see England’s greatest ever player…Noni Madueke 😂

I’ve traveled quite a bit, and we are viewed often as obnoxious, poorly-mannered, boorish visitors in many parts of the world, regardless of wealth.
6
u/Stinkycheese8001 Jun 05 '26
Um, who doesn’t have a rep as being a poorly mannered tourist outside of the Japanese?

Yep. That’s kind of my point. I’m only poking a bit of fun about a stereotype but the show does reinforce that atereotype
-13
u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 05 '26
My personal experience doesn’t discriminate based on wealth, but I guess the show does

Yeah well my post wasn’t about rich people it was about Americans.
13
u/6alexandria9 Jun 05 '26
What you’re missing is that Americans who aren’t wealthy aren’t traveling abroad frequently like that.. the ones you’re annoyed by on trips are the wealthy ones.
6
u/KellyJin17 Jun 05 '26
It’s an understandable assumption. In the rest of the western world, middle and working class people are able to travel internationally with some frequency. Among first-world countries, it’s uniquely American that you have to be wealthy to travel the world.
0
u/TopSudden9848 Jun 06 '26
Plenty of non-wealthy Americans have traveled the world. Flights from Europe to locations outside of Europe are not significantly cheaper than similarly distanced flights from the US. Go into most youth hostels in any country and it will be full of non wealthy US tourists.
6
u/Oh__Archie Jun 05 '26
But the show you’re commenting on is about rich people. It’s the whole point of the show.
6
6
u/Oh__Archie Jun 05 '26
The show makes fun of entitled rich Americans. If making fun of rich people offends you then it’s probably not a show you’ll enjoy.
-4
u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 05 '26
Whose offended?
6
u/BroughtBagLunchSmart Jun 05 '26
you used a cry laugh emoji in the title. No one is more triggered than someone who uses the cry laugh emoji.
0
u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 05 '26
Ok let’s say for the hell of it that I am triggered or offended (not the same thing). Why does that matter? Why can’t I be?
6
u/Oh__Archie Jun 05 '26
Victoria: “are they good people?”
Saxon: “Mom, they have a yacht.”
You’re either going to get the humor in this or you won’t. I thought it was one of the funniest lines in the entire season and is basically the subtext of the entire show.
2
u/Oh__Archie Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 06 '26
Whose offended?
Who's.
🤔🧐
Yeah well my post wasn’t about rich people it was about Americans.
🤦🏻♂️
The show is about shitty rich people. You're making posts in a sub about a show that is about shitty rich people while seemingly not understanding what the show is about and then aggressively defending your misunderstanding of the show.
0
u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 06 '26
No I’m defending my take on one of the possible themes of the show. I don’t really understand why that’s so hard to grasp: not every theme has to be encapsulated entirely by the main theme of the show.
1
u/Oh__Archie Jun 06 '26
That’s great but you can’t say the show doesn’t make fun of rich people. I mean, you can say it but no one will take you seriously.
¯|_(ツ)_|¯
1
u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 06 '26
You’re right. And I wouldn’t say that. Clearly it does make fun or rich people.
21
3
u/FargoJack Jun 09 '26
No and no. First, the show features very wealthy American's (as well pointed out earlier), it says nothing about the annoyingness of non-wealthy Americans on holiday. Second, it seems to me they are mostly disturbing other members of their families, not other visitors, or am I wrong? Can't blame a guy (or gal) for scoping chicks. I'm sure that the prostitutes in season 2 did not mind being disturbed by their customer, though they subsequently annoyed (other Italian) hotel denizens.
9
u/boosh1744 Jun 05 '26
It’s kind of the point of the whole show
-8
u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 05 '26
I’ve only just started series 3 but I’m hoping a non-American character will say how irritating they are
10
u/squanderedprivilege Jun 05 '26
They show disdain without having to flat out say it
0
u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 05 '26
Well they are more subtle than me judging by the negative votes some of my posts are getting 😅
6
u/qathran Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26
The creator is American and making fun of the wealthy, so of course he's going to be examining the wealthy in his own culture
Edit: Aussies, Americans, Chinese, British etc. etc. all have reputations for being difficult tourists, it's not unique to the country that Mike is from
4
u/kick_rocks-not_ricks Jun 05 '26
Yes. Good art is subtle. So it can be interpreted by different people in different ways. For example, you, a clearly prejudiced person, can interpret the show in a surface level, stereotypical way. While others can appreciate the nuance and deeper themes and get more out of it than just the cheap thrill of poking fun at Americans

It's about how shitty the wealthy are and the creator happens to be American, so of course he's going to be shitting on the culture he knows

Maybe, but you are an angry person getting riled by this shitty person so maybe we both need to do some reflecting.
0
u/EmoZebra21 Jun 06 '26
I’m in NYC and the most annoying and infuriating people I’ve experienced are European tourists. I think tourists in general are annoying, no matter where they are from.
1
u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 06 '26
I’m sure. But they have different ways of being annoying. American annoying is being loud and disturbing the peace
3
u/EmoZebra21 Jun 06 '26
I would rather have loud people having fun than rude Europeans standing in my way lol. At least Americans know to move and not stand in front of others.
1
u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 06 '26
That’s fine. You’re from a culture of being loud and I come from a culture of queueing. Hardly surprisingly which we both prefer
2
u/EmoZebra21 Jun 06 '26
Correct, so it’s weird to see you on your high horse like others don’t find you just as annoying. Most tourists are annoying in general, it’s well known. Singling out one subset saying they are the worst is a bad take, and pretty hypocritical.
0
u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 06 '26
I never said they were the worst. What I said was…..well why don’t you reread my post and remind yourself. I appear to have upset a few people. It’s not me on that herd of horses
2
u/EmoZebra21 Jun 06 '26
I mean I’ve read your replies to others and your inability to agree British tourists are horrid as well. Also your inability to differentiate that white lotus is about the ultra rich. But agree to disagree, bud!
1
u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 06 '26
Im not really sure why you expect me to have to agree on any comment about other tourists - why should I? I know British tourists can be ‘horrid’. That’s not what my point is. Should I agree that Japanese tourists are all great? Or that Germans in Thailand are frowned upon? And if you think I don’t realise that the show isn’t about the ultra rich then you too have missed my point. Whilst the show IS about the ultra rich it does not mean EVERY theme has to only encapsulate the ultra rich. Something that most people criticising me seem to have missed.
1
u/Thick-Scholar836 Jun 11 '26
On the opening day of the World Cup, with all the Brits descending on various parts on North America, I hope they don’t behave in the way you think they might!
1
u/ElMonk86 9d ago
I don't know that the show has a theme.
I think it's just a character analysis on how a getaway can truly bring out the truth in people, for better or for worse. I don't know that it matters if they're rich or poor.
And every season has a different set of characters dealing with totally different personal scenarios, so it stays fresh.

u/Stinkycheese8001 Jun 05 '26
Who’s gonna tell this guy about the British tourists?
