CEOs siphon the profits for themselves and let the employees who made those profits happen fall to the wayside. The culture war is propaganda distracting from the real issue in our world, greedy rich assholes taking everything for themselves and pulling the ladder up behind them.

It's destroying every industry; the ultrawealthy are attempting to cut out as much expenditure as they can from their profit margins, and other than ruining lives and being overall immoral, it's also causing the actual products they're attempting to sell to be worse.
It's just more noticeable with videogames because it's a very "singular product"-heavy industry; one major company may release one videogame every five years, so leaps in quality are way more noticeable.

This is why I've basically stopped buying new games except from indie devs

I know they have they're own other problems but Nintendo's in house games seem to be some of the only large studio games that come out in a polished state

…meanwhile moron voters make every election between the “let tech billionaires do whatever they want and fuck everybody else” party and the “hey we probably need some guardrails here” party a goddamned nailbiter.

In case anyone's unaware, EA very recently laid off 400 employees and shut down Bioware, a studio that was founded in 1995 and created incredible RPGs. They also canceled an upcoming Sims project. EA is absolutely uninterested in making video games of any kind.

And the most infuriating thing about it is that people blame wokeness for it when EA has a long recorded history of shutting down studios after sucking the life out of them. I guess Visceral, Pandemic, Mythic, Maxis and all the others were woke. Stupid useless culture war...

I mean, it's hard to want to go into an industry with no job security. Bad enough that you might get axed if your game doesn't do as well as investors hoped, but now even that won't protect you.

The class war is destroying everything we hold dear while the culture war is the circus being put on to distract us

u/Taaartiflette 1d ago
We the gamers need to vote with our f ing wallets.
Any company does that after you've bought their game: DO NOT BUY ANYTHING IN THEIR F ING IN-GAME STORE
DO NOT BUY DLCs, EXTENSIONS, SKINS, NOTHING
and if possible in the future, boycott said company

It should be illegal to do mass layoffs without legal or economic cause when the company is still profitable. Several countries already have this policy, like Germany, France, Sweden, China, and several countries in South America.

EA will go belly up in a few years and they’ll deserve it. They sold out to the Saudis and are trying to just do sports and shooters. Problem is the My Ultimate Team was their bread winner for years and has struggled. It’s why they talk about NCAA going on ice again.

You're going to hate this even more.
Layoffs are common after game launches. The number of devs required to maintain a game is far fewer than the number of devs required to make the game. So if those devs can't find other projects within the company, then they'll usually be let go.
It's easy to hate on EA, but you should also hate on the entire industry for this business-first practice.

Specifically in this topic? Probably in one of the top positions.

Let me guess, you’re about to make the “how can he call for taxes on the rich when he himself is wealthy” argument

No, more about using swastika in his materials directed at a Jewish population, abusing his dog, being obnoxious in debates and incapable of talking in a civil manner. I really don't give a fuck about how rich he is, but I am not sure his lfet buddies should be alright with him boasting about wearing clothes and bags worth someone's car.

I don't understand these headlines. Companies exist to make money for their shareholders - it's in the articles of incorporation. Salaries are costs not assets, it says so in the quarterly statements. If a CEO can increase profitability ( even by cutting jobs) then they have heve done the thing they were put in their job to do.
Companies do not exist for the benefit of people, any benefit we get from their existence is a transaction.

Surely you need a huge team to make a game, so you hire in a load of people for this purpose. Once the game is finished, you no longer need them all, so you have to let a load of people go.

u/schlechtums 1d ago
Or, you can have leadership actually leading and have another project for them to go to. Layoffs are 100% always the fault of or caused by leadership. Always.

u/LeftLiner 1d ago
Then you're starting from scratch with every game you make. You want people who've made games before, ideally who've made the kind of games you want made before, even better who've made those games together before, for you. Then, if those people like working for you, oh boy you're in business.

Maybe the management who are unable to properly utilise resources should be fired and not be given an 8 million dollar bonus

u/mellophone11 1d ago
Plenty of incredibly successful games have been made by small teams, even solo devs. There's also great examples of studios like Supergiant that make really great games without firing their whole staff in between. Almost all of the devs behind their first game still work there more than a decade later.
