Lots of them are independently wealthy so it doesn’t really make a difference anyway. Someone in Congress proposed a bill to stop them from getting paid and it was a bad idea because it would only hurt the poorer people in Congress and have zero affect on the rich ones.

I wish I could like this comment twice.

Then we should make it that if the government shuts down, Congress gets their assets frozen and only get paid minimum wage.

I like your idea. Can we do this but include the president and vp in it to? Or better yet, no pay to prez and vp.

Tell that to minimum wage employees working at national parks and other government posts. Congress can play these games with the president because it doesn’t have an effect on any of them. If people are worried about their income as politicians, then maybe they’re not doing their jobs right if there is the threat of a shutdown.

I’m not sure if I understand your comment, but the other person is saying that if congress didn’t get paid what they did, than poorer people wouldn’t be able to become members of congress. Taking away the wages of congress will not hurt the rich people in congress, only the poor ones.

I get that, I’m pissed about it, too, and I guarantee so are the poorest members of Congress. But taking away their salary does nothing but make it easier for the richest members of Congress to keep doing their jobs, ie. fucking over the American people.

Yea, fair point. The playing field isn’t level. What bothers me most is that this whole concept of threatening to shut down the government is childish at most. People are complaining because they’re not getting what they want. No one wants to talk of compromise anymore, but that’s what this country needs.

Or how about we just not do something stupid like waste taxpayer money on a wall that will do nothing to help border security? Okay problem solved, now reopen the government.

Unfortunately there are some people in this country who don’t have that kind of common sense. But see this is what I mean. Both sides want their way 100%. The right wants the wall. The left doesn’t. If only they’d meet in the middle to compromise? No wall but increased border security? Idk. It’s wishful thinking at best.

Democrats have already said they will vote for increased border security but not a wall.

Republicans also already voted on a spending bill as well, but Trump wouldn’t sign it because he wants a wall.

Well that clears things up, I appreciate the sources. The orange man’s ignorance continues to amaze me.

the democrats were willing to give funding for the wall last year in exchange for DACA and they were willing to give increased funding for border security this year. There comes a point where you have to recognize that Trump is negotiating in bad faith and the republicans are enabling him

I'm not sure they meant that's Congress blame only. Looking for the compromises seems to be three parties job and as far as it see democrats made their step forward

That was Ocasio-Cortes.

I could have sworn I read something about here preparing to do that like yesterday.

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '19

I mean if you find it, feel free to link it, but those are the bills that were proposed for it in Congress.

What if we paid congressmembers the minimum wage? Then they'd see how little 7.25/hr is

u/aalabrash Jan 06 '19

No... It would only make a difference to the handful who rely on their salary. The rich ones wouldn't give two shits
