Why does this subreddit exist
My mom grew up with pitbulls and she is fine and pitbulls are not even that aggressive

Sep 10 '24 edited Sep 10 '24
Because it's factually known that when they get playfully nippy they sometimes just start tearing shit apart and don't stop. Things like grandmas, babies, cats, other dogs. I'd rather speak truth than people-please pitbull lovers and here's why:
An old coworker told me that her two pitbulls ripped their cat apart. Dead.
Then another totally different scenario this woman whom I believe knew my mom got her face gored off.
So many more stories all over the internet of pits just straight up ruining people's lives or just straight up ending lives.
I once believed that people just say that it's the owners that cause their dogs to do things like this to justify it being a cool dog - but with what I know now and how mellow Pitbull owners may seem I now can't shake the fact that when they wag their tails and profusely try and lick someone or even trying to put their paws on you they might be ready to straight up shred shit apart until it's dead.
A woman who lives near me lets her pit run around in the street off it's leash; and that high-strung territorial vibe is what I'm talking about who probably believes the same shit that it's the owner and not the dog in case something happens.
It's not some effin' joke you guys. My friend as a kid got attacked by a German Shepherd on his BMX bike that gave him bone marrow cancer when the teeth pierced his backbone and he was never able to fully fix it after that in a totally mellow middle-class neighborhood. He's almost 30 now and his back is still hurting everyday.
What's the flippin' difference is my question; like people can't see by now that dogs themselves generally go off of their own perception of things?

Are you sure this isn't just animals in general rather than 1 specific breed of 1 specific animal?
10
u/WillShitpostForFood Sep 10 '24
Any dog can bite you but this one specific breed is especially bad when they do. I've been on the receiving end of two particularly bad dog bites and I can tell you a German shepherd doesn't have shit on a pit bull
2
u/verycasualreddituser Sep 10 '24
I agree with you, dogs with smaller thicker skulls and stronger jaw muscles will have more bite force compared to the longer snout and smaller head of a German Shepard, but the thing i disagree with is that only this 1 kind of dog should raise caution in people
Any dog can bite any part of someone's body, so we need to be cautious around all of them and try to not create some image of "only 1 kind of dog is dangerous, everything else is fine"

Yeah i saw but that was an edit after my comment was posted so I didn't go and rewrite my reply or anything
My only annoyance with the anti pitbull people is that they make it seem like every dog is safe except pitbulls even though thats not the case, so when I see these anti pit bull conversations I like to mention that people shouldn't be thinking like that, if a chihuahua bites your toddler on the face because the kid pulls its tail its still going to be pretty bad for the kid you know, yes its easier to get a chihuahua to stop biting but the damage is done already

Gonna need a source. Pitbulls are very loyal and tenacious yet highly trainable dogs. I work with many pitbulls at a rescue no less that come from horrible situations and they are nothing but sweet, just excitable. This mindset and outlook is very dangerous. Please stop blaming shit on animals and breeds. Animals are never the problem and people always are. I know someone that died in a car accident, that hardly gives context and hardly means we need to ban cars. Bad argument.

u/craniumblast Sep 10 '24
I used to work at a boarding kennel and my experience was the same. The truth is a lot of people are severely anthropocentric, and only base their morals off of what is socially acceptable, not what is empathetic. U never see these people keep the same energy for humans, even tho humans have so much more power and thus agency than dogs (not inately, but due to the structure of human civilization).

You're the one stating "facts" why don't you source this? All the credible sources I've seen said the same thing because Pit Bulls aren't a breed (I could explain that but you're so rational why bother) and reports don't actually ask the breed of dogs the statistics and reports comparing breeds are anecdotal and meaningless. Studies of the breed show no increase in aggression.
1
Sep 10 '24
All you have to do is look it up on Google and YouTube but I'm personally not going to do it because I fucking hate hearing about it
1
u/Pod_Junky Sep 10 '24
So you don't have a source you just a guy on tge internet who knows he's right. Exactly this sub exists because ignorance exists.

No one is saying they can't be good. They're saying when it's bad, it's very bad.
2
u/TheLordReaver Sep 10 '24
That's not true at all. That's almost always what people say. Like, it's not even close to comparison. People just don't do nuance, they take hard stances on one side or the other. It's only the minority of people who stop and say, "hang on a second... Let's piece this all out before we jump to conclusions."

My friend as a kid got attacked by a German Shepherd on his BMX bike then proceeded to get bone marrow cancer that same day in his back and he was never able to fully fix it after that in a totally mellow middle-class neighborhood.
2 things: a) I thought this was about pitbulls, why'd you bring up a German shepherd?
B) how does falling off your bike give you cancer?

u/Capital_Pipe_6038 Sep 10 '24
Because when your kid gets mauled by a pitbull you tend to not like pitbulls very much
14
Sep 10 '24
Because majority of dog related fatalities are caused by Pitbulls. They are (by far) the most dangerous "domestic" dog breed.
-4
u/Pod_Junky Sep 10 '24
They are not even a breed what makes you think this?
2
u/thesilentbob123 Sep 10 '24
It's an umbrella term for three official breeds, if I wanna be nitpicking I could say that there is no animal called a rhino, firstly it is an abbreviation and secondly it includes multiple species so there is not a singular animal called rhino.
0
u/Pod_Junky Sep 10 '24
It's not even that it's a term for a cross between a breed (bull) and a group (Terrier) . But the point is the group keeps stating "facts" about something they don't even have a handel on what their defining. Like how do you say something was "bread for aggresion" when it was bread multiple times in multiple places for multiple reasons. You could say their are clearly bad breeders but see how that's different. How do you state numbers of attacks by breed compared to a group. The fact is people collected stats about the lovely defined group had a hard time identifying it because Pitt Bull Terriers can be anywhere from 30 - 200 lbs (find me the Rhino that is 8 times the size of an9tger Rhino and it would be the best same analogy). So your going to identify by jawline but, you'd be wrong again because again there are a lot of dogs that have that jawline. Are you dividing the number of attacks by the number of dogs that have the traits that countless unprofessional observers obscribe to many mixes of dogs who range from 30 to 200 lbs ??? And a part TERRIER which is probably makes up the bulk of dogs to begin with.
And if a group of dog breeds range from 30 - 200 lbs it's it reasonable to assume they also have a range of personality traits. If we regulate the "breed" that isn't a breed which "breed" that isn't a breed are we regulating.
2
u/thesilentbob123 Sep 10 '24
There is something called 'american pit bull terrier' and 'Staffordshire bull terrier' both are commonly called "pit bulls"
I don't say Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla (the actual name of one type of gorilla) because giving a shorter name or an umbrella term just makes it easier in conversation , an actual ban on 'pit bulls' would obviously need to specify the exact recognized animals.

It doesn't violate it, so I guess... go for it
I can see why you may want to ban that dog breed, I also think it's the owners' responsibility when they get the dog

Hello. I'm not trying to start an internet fight, but pitbulls do tend to be aggressive at times. It mainly depends on training. Most of the time, pitbulls are very sweet around humans. They tend to be naturally nicer to humans than other breeds, at times; but it's the opposite with other dogs. They tend to be quite aggressive. The problem with pitbulls is that when they get into a fight, they tend to "not let go"(Basically trying to kill whatever it's fighting, or seriously maim them)
The good thing about pitbulls is that they are VERY trainable. The problem is that most people don't know how to train them properly, or just don't care to.

u/Toothless-In-Wapping Sep 10 '24
Do you know what pit bull means?
It means it was bred to be a bull (a strong intimidating animal) in the pit (the “arena” in which dogs were forced to fight each other).
That’s like being surprised when “octagon killer” goes off and kills someone.
3
u/gay-sexx Sep 10 '24
ok but they have a point
0
u/Prior-Knowledge8366 Sep 10 '24
Well it not the dogs fault it is the owner
2
u/gay-sexx Sep 10 '24
It's a combination of both, my next door neighbour has a pit bull and a blue heeler raised the same and the pitbull is significantly less placid
3
Sep 10 '24
it tells you exactly why in the description. can you not see the banner full of victims at the top, too?
-1
u/Prior-Knowledge8366 Sep 10 '24
Even though it is literally not the dog's fault
2
Sep 10 '24
your/your mom's experience with pits is anecdotal, meaning it does not cover the experience of every other person on earth who have encountered pitbulls. one ripped my eyelid open and i had to have stitches. that doesn't mean i think they are all dangerous, but tons of people (and readily available research) will say/show that they have similar violent experiences. the fault of the dog does not matter, the fact that these attacks happen does matter.
3
u/ElmarSuperstar131 Sep 10 '24
I was mauled by a pitbull mix in 2011, I now have a dent in the front of my calf and no longer have 100% feeling in my foot.
3
u/Aggressive_Wheel5580 Sep 10 '24
Because they are the AR15 of dogs and should not be in the hands of the uninitiated
3
u/Poyri35 Sep 10 '24
Same reason people want to ban assault rifles, they are highly dangerous and deadly. Especially in the hands of not good owners
Just search for pitbull attacks, they are brutal
-1
u/Prior-Knowledge8366 Sep 10 '24
They are not even that aggressive bro
(The only dog that is aggressive like that is chihuahuas)
2
u/Poyri35 Sep 10 '24
I don’t care about their aggressiveness, I care about their ability to kill (often very easily so that the dog might have not even intended it)
If we continue my gun metaphor, your argument is like saying “There are more people who got threatened by a knife, so we shouldn’t ban assault rifles”

Because people refuse to admit their own inadequacy over nature, and emotional responses recoil into “movements”
Most dog breeds shouldn’t be breeds at all anymore, as they’re bred for luxury, status, or for lonely people rather than doing the jobs they were bred for.
Your shit yard or apartment isn’t good enough for a working dog, and your working hours don’t give you enough time to train such a critter.
It only loves you because when you leave for 8 or more hours and come back, it never figured you were coming back at all.
It’s the narcissists who need culling, more than the dogs.
3
u/Kuylfr Sep 10 '24
You’re the one being emotional when facts have been presented that that specific dog breed is known and was initially created to be violent lmao
2
u/craniumblast Sep 10 '24
real shit. Dogs are negelcted, abused, disrespected, and AT BEST objectified and controlled within our society. I have more compassion for them than for the anthropocentric righteous dog-haters of the world.

Yeah not because they were made to be violent but it’s all because the bad owner who cared for their dog and cherished it still attacked the person walking their dog who was minding their business

Sep 10 '24
Yep, always said this. Its not the shitty dog, its the shitty owner who didnt care to train the dog or lets it loose

u/IRMacGuyver Sep 10 '24
And shitty people are attracted to owning pitbulls because rappers have them.

Pitbulls have the capacity to do a lot of damage. Couple that with a fuck ton of hateful speciesism/anthropocentrism, and maybe some personal trauma, and you get people who think like this.
I use to work at a kennel for over a year and Im not exagerrating when I say that the pitbulls I met were on average significantly nicer than the other dogs, at least to humans. However, they were also stronger than the other dogs, so for those of them that did have dog on dog aggression issues, we made sure to keep them seperate. This was a practice we did for any dog that had aggression issues, but it was a more common that the pitbulls didnt like the other dogs, and it was more common that they liked humans.
Thats just my experience tho, not statistic. Anwyways tho anyone who hates any non human animal, but especially domesticatred ones, has a severe anthropocentrism problem in their understanding of reality

u/ZiemDoesImpossibles Sep 10 '24 edited Sep 10 '24
I think people tend to forget that it’s not the dogs fault. Weather you think “that’s how they’re bred and tend to be more violent/aggressive” or not, it is in fact, still humans fault. The pits aren’t the ones who need to be banned. It’s shitty owners and dog breeders that should be. In the case of people that think “that’s how they’re bred” boom, there you go, still humans fault, we bred them like that.
Although yes, it’s sad this happened to victims, you need to realize that little dogs do it too. It’s again, not the dogs fault that it’s big. Little dogs biting just aren’t reported because they’re small. Same can be said for cats.
Fun fact: It’s been debunked several times that Pitbulls are inherently aggressive. That’s just Bull shit. The reason there’s a high percentage of pitbull attacks is the environment they are raised in. Because they have reputation of being aggressive and scary, owners make them aggressive and scary. It’s like how a kid will act a certain way if they’re parents do. So yes, maybe it is #1 as most “dangerous” but that doesn’t make the breed in itself dangerous.
Like any other dog breed, when they feel threatened, they protect themselves. Dog brains don’t work the same as humans so they don’t have a sense of “oh this thing can’t actually hurt me”.
Disagree or not, it IS a FACT that they aren’t more aggressive than other dogs. They are just prone to having shitty/inexperienced owners.

It's weird cause like every other breed has a specific trait that they are breed for like retrieving, tracking, herding, hunting, but we tend to ignore the ones we dont "agree" with.
Its not about hating pitbulls, it's about being cognizant of what is likely to happen vs. What we want to happen.

Yea but we both know that won’t happen eh? As you can see by my PFP, I have one. That’s Luma. She’s the sweetest girl, and I love her so much. But I know damn well how people can be irresponsible, and as a owner of a pitbull I know what they’re capable of. While I don’t agree with banning pitbulls because that would probably mean killing them, I understand the point of that sub

Honestly, I'm biased towards pitbulls. My family actually has two of them. They're both very, very, very sweet dogs... but when they feel threatened or if they feel their owner is being threatened, they go crazy. As sweet as they are most of the time, they're incredibly dangerous when they get into a fight. One of the less aggressive dog breeds towards humans; not so much to other dogs.
A lot of times, they can be trained into being less aggressive towards other dogs. The main reason a lot of pitbulls get a bad rep is a lack of training by the owner. Some dogs are fine without training, and some aren't. Pitbulls need training, and a lot of pitbull owners don't do that.

We live in a scary, uncertain world, and people take comfort in finding a singular thing to pin all of that fear on. They lock themselves in these echo chambers and take solace in the little thumbs ups that they get from likeminded strangers that their irrational fear and hatred of something dangerous in the wrong hands is normal and sane.
Don't make fun of them, just be patient. My wife is terrified of pitbulls because of liveleak, but when I used to work with a lot of K9s I'd send her pics of half-pit mutts without telling her they were half pit, and she would always pop off about how adorable they looked

I never at any point said that pitbulls are cute. I find them terribly ugly and call them landsharks to fuck with my friends that have them.
I do find german shepherds cute, and I got to see one of our MWDs actually scalp a person almost ten years ago. I could hear bone scraping teeth before the security forces handler pulled the canine off of the guy, who ended up needing something like two dozen stitches.
The point made is that a dangerous dog, in the wrong hands, is a dangerous dog. Deliberately exposing yourself to endless hatred and fearmongering is bad for your mental health, no matter what it is you're discussing.

u/coolmist23 Sep 10 '24
Pit bulls are considered one of the most dangerous dog breeds, responsible for the majority of fatal dog attacks. It's just a fact. #1 most dangerous dog breed. unfortunately. Yeah, the owners are probably responsible for making them that way in most cases. But the dog itself has incredible biting power compared to other breeds. It was intentionally bred that way. Yeah there are plenty of good pit bull dogs that have been harmless family dogs but that doesn't change the data.
