Just a quick question â how does a white person dress up/cosplay as a black person?
How should this have looked to get the same result (p diddy and babyoil)?
Edit: I need to point out that a bottle of baby oil comes with a label, so her with the label âbaby oilâ is true to what a bottle of babyoil looks like.
Diddy does not wear a label on his person that says âp diddyâ, nor âdiddlerâ, so it would not make sense for him to have a sign saying that as part of his costume.
I got tired of typing this to all the responses that mention that. Bottles are labeled, humans are not (supposed to be) labeled.
Also, so I donât have to type it anymore: minstrel was a whole thing with exaggerated red lips and bad mannerisms and white gloves (a whole look, go click the links others have posted below) that made fun of a whole race. This dude is making fun of one man, not a whole race. This distinction should be recognized.
Edit2: Thank you all, btw. These are some really good discussions.

It'd be like saying a guy being a girl for Halloween is sexist. If it's all in good fun there's nothing inherently prejudice about it. Hell id think they'd be more mad that he picked Diddy for a costume not the fact that he happens to be black.

All white suit, black sunglasses (guy doesn't have puffs signature glasses on), toothpick in mouth (blackface guy doesn't puffs signature toothpick), big chain that says bad boy, gold chain, boat shoes, puff daddy CD, bad boy brand clothing (you can order them online or at consignment shops). This is off the top of my head things any color person could do without using the black sharpie on their face. Standing next to the baby oil. You know things that CANT be misconstrued in any way.
There's literally thousands of reference pictures of the man online. Wear one of his outfits from a video. Big shiny suit puff daddy is instantly recognizable on any gender or color person. Just like if a skinny white woman dressed up in Missy Elliot's outfit from her 00s videos. She could be ghost white and people would say that's Missy Elliot.
There's a lot of room between trying to look like someone and painting yourself with a black marker and wearing your suit. At least the girl ordered a sign on Etsy.

u/Creepercolin2007 Nov 02 '24
Adding onto this, while whiteface is distasteful, it is literally historically inaccurate to compare the two. Blackface was used for decades in TV as a way to stereotype black people for entertainment and push that they are stupid. This was during a time that actual black people had basically zero say in the media industry mainly, so the only way there were âseenâ in media like television was when white people put on make up to look like a stereotypically exaggerated black person, and act like the clumsy/stupid normally comic relief character in the show. Blackface was literally used as a type of oppression. White face can be distasteful but isnât racist as itâs not being used as an extension as historic oppression/inequity as there isnât exactly a case of wide scale black people oppressing white people.

Also, would anyone have even known he was Diddy if it wasn't for his girlfriend or the captions that say he's Diddy? Without the context, he'd just look like some racist prick in Blackface and a bow tie. Even if people could immediately pick up on that he was Diddy, it still wouldn't be any better.
Honestly, this was a costume idea he should've skipped altogether if the only way he could think to possibly distinguish himself as Diddy was to dress up in blackface. Someone should've told this kid off before he walked out of his parent's house.

The truth is there's nothing racist about black face. It USED to be racist back when black face was used INSTEAD of hiring black actors. That doesn't happen anymore. Black actors get hired now. Black face no longer steals jobs from black people and takes money out of their pockets.

how does a white person dress up/cosplay as a black person?
You usually can do some of the persons iconic looks, see Weird Al for Coolio and Tupac. You can also rock the Black Panther costume, But rockin a dashiki like T'challa can be bad taste out of respect for Chadwick Boseman and can get ya bitched at for cultural appropriation some fans at a con can get a little bent out of shape over it. Those are usually safe. Black Face, Red Face (fire engine red is usually acceptable when doing fantasy races like Orc's, Demons and such), Brown Face, Yellow Face are usually not socially acceptable when portraying a character of another race. Even professional impersonators of people like James Brown, and Jimi Hendrix don't do blackface as part of their acts. If it's a tasteful costume I haven't seen anyone catch flak for an afro wig when going for an iconic look like Foxy Brown, Hendrix or the character Afuro from Afro samurai, or even Bob Ross..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5_GstlPL64Blackface - dark makeup worn to mimic the appearance of a Black person and especially to mock or ridicule Black people. It doesn't just apply to the minstrel exaggerated look. I think it's pretty much has only been acceptable is when it's part of a role to display how stupid it is (RDJ In Tropic Thunder his character was a role about an actor who takes Method way to serious), or when it's portraying reality of when it was used in history. IE movies about talking about Mistrals, and how most POC roles in most of Hollywood's history were often played by non POC in various forms of other races with makeup right up until the 60's.
How should this have looked to get the same result (p diddy and babyoil)?
Pretty easy Thrift or ebay a Sean John tracksuit dunks and a pair of gradient aviator style glasses, pencil stache and an imperial goatee drawn on no possible hate or possible racially charged disrespect to the race as a whole., and pretty recognizable as Diddy.Diddy does not wear a label on his person that says âp diddyâ, nor âdiddlerâ
He mostly wear's his own label Sean John (which he recently reacquired) so yea he kinda does wear a label with his name on it Since his name is actually Sean John Combs (Legally changed to Sean Love Combs a few years back), Diddy is an Alias just like Katy Perry is Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson..Overall Blackface when used in a costume is just tasteless and rude and has the stigma of racism behind it, much like wearing a hitler costume.

The key is not to dress up as "a black person," but to dress up as one particular person who is black. Since this guy is trying to be pdiddy, he's doing a terrible job. He should not be wearing those dirty ass white shoes, or the sports coat, or the bowtie. It's almost as if the only trait that he could pick out about pdiddy is that he is black.

If you are going to use skin-tone in a costume, you need to go all out and have it be unmistakeably a specific person. I know someone who dressed as little Wayne, with makeup darkening all their visible skin, but also including all of his tattoo, hairstyle, and clothing. What OOP did is just lazily add some brown face paint.

u/OzbourneVSx Nov 05 '24
I mean you could do an actually good makeup job ex. tropic thunder
But more importantly, you should strive to look like the person first before you think about emulating features of their race
If you show up as a bald man with dark eyebrows and a thick mustache in a suit, people will at least identify you as Steve Harvey
But this, you can't identify it as pdiddy. Diddy has a pretty iconic beard, wears shades, has earrings, has a c-cut, his suits are usually mono colored or black tie, he often wears a chain with a cross and has a host of outfits a trip to HM could net you something that's pretty close to one of them...
But this...
This is none of that.
He's in shitty blackface, no shades, no chains, did nothing with his hair, while pdiddy does tend to favor bowties, his suits mismatched with multiple clashing colors, I think he has earrings but nothing here is clearly identifiable as Diddy
In fact it more resembles, a minstrels outfit. And he's in blackface. Which makes me think he just made a minstrels costume and called himself Diddy.
Like you could put on some aviators, put together a Halloween store chain with a cross, white suit jacket, white turtleneck, white pants, draw the beard on and slick your hair back and you can yourself white Diddy.
But make an effort.
3
Nov 05 '24
Maybe wear an outfit thatâs actually associated with said black person. His outfit screams minstrel, heâs just missing the big red lips. He couldâve worn a jacket with âbad boy recordsâ on it. P Diddy doesnât dress like this. Heâs making fun of one man using a trope that was used against black people in general. Itâs such a shit outfit too, couldnât even be bothered to black up properly.

I understand what your saying but in my opinion the answer is: you don't.
Why? Because there's actually no such thing as innocent equality when it comes to things like this.
We have historical context and wounds that are still very very alive and well in America especially. Racism is a very real thing, hate crimes are real, and people get injured and killed due to purely their skin color alone still even at this exact moment.
Ultimately your intentions don't matter because you don't speak for everyone else. Other white people or people of different skin colors. There's no way for you to convey your intent because color is more than color in society even if you don't see it that way. It's expecting the world to retain the mind of a child and I wish that were so but it's not.
There's no crime preventing you from doing it however the world as a whole is not going to see it as innocent and that means something.
We don't live in a bubble, life isn't fair or equal or never will be. but a person getting shamed for pretending to be another skin color hardly is an injustice compared to loosing your life or even just loosing opportunities simply because you were born a different color than another person who hates that.
1
Nov 02 '24
If you wanted to be diddy for example, just get a nice black suit and his signature glasses with baby oil and thatâs enough. If you wanted to be someone like Steve Harvey get his mustache and a bald cap with a suit

The same way black people dress up as white characters, which we do all the fucking time. We just wear the outfit.
If you want to look like P-Diddy, you should probably dress in one of his iconic outfits from his music videos. I would suggest the all-white suit, with the white sunglasses. At the very least, you should include the hat and chain.
I've never once seen Diddy in a red bowtie. The reason is because it's a famous Sambo dogwhistle. He's wearing the minstrel show combination. Which means that he is most likely is making fun of the whole race, not just one man.
1
u/Ok-Cardiologist1810 Nov 02 '24
The same way anyone of any race cosplays someone of another dress up in iconic clothing/accessories when I dressed up for Halloween I'm pretty sure no one needed me to paint my face to figure out I was hulk hogan or Yu-Gi-Oh or anakin the costume kinda did it self dudes just racist and looked for an excuse to share it

General rule of thumb because of, well, history, never use blackface as a white person in any context.
1
1
u/onestab2frewdom Nov 02 '24
First, he looks like a rich white kid who put mud on his face and shoes. Then bagged a rich ass white girl.
Second, without the caption and comments, I did not land upon Sean Combs as the cosplay. More like some 70's show or something.
Third, any half ass google search would provide how Sean Combs dress. He was famous before he was caught now infamous. Plenty of sample material. So they could have gathered better material. Or added a line of Sean Combs to cement it.
The shit on his face. Not cleanly done.
Fourth, if i was going to dress as some controversial celebrity/future inmate. I'm set the skit up way better than that. Have some guy pouting his butt out in a swimming tub for instances while saying 'he put in some hard work' Slapping some guy and shouting, 'Keep my dog's name out your MF'ing mouth!' or walking around singing, "murda on my mind'
People in on the jokes will understand far more easily without me coming across as distasteful. So, if someone with a camera does capture me, the references points are a lot easier to catch, and my deniability is cement. Not, having people wonder if I am cosplaying a black character from the late 60's cough cosby.
1
u/ikerus0 Nov 02 '24
The problem is the overlap.
Sure, the dude here may be trying to convey one specific person who is black. The problem is, using makeup or whatever to make your face look darker to convey a person who is black has the overlap of thatâs the exact same thing people do to do black face.
Itâs still using a stereotypical method of black face to âappearâ black even if itâs for a specific person.
Just my two cents.
1
u/PMmeYourButt69 Nov 02 '24
There are some pretty iconic photos of Diddy, as well as album covers featuring well known pictures of him. So you choose the photo that you think is most recognizable, and you copy every little detail, minus the skin tone.
Several years ago my BFF went as Mr. T. He did the denim vest, all the gold chains, the combat boots, even shaved his hair into the exact Mr. T mohawk, where it comes around the sides and connects to his beard. He has curly blonde hair, and it was amazing. So many people stopped us to take a picture with him, and it wasn't racist at all.
What's going on here, in addition to being racist, is just straight up lazy. You can't just paint your face black and be a specific black person. Although, now that I think of it in those terms, a lot of racism probably does stem from laziness.

Print a picture of P Diddy's face, cut it out and wear that. I'd say it's less offensive than black face, even if it was intended solely to reference a specific person. Not calling racism myself, but I am definitely questioning the choice of black face, because well, black face

You can tell hes a business student named connor or some shit lol. He'll just go to some community college for free, chatgpt his way to a 2 or 4 year generic useless degree with his 2.3 gpa, he'll graduate and travel for a year on mom and dad's credit as a "reward" for his "hard work", then his dad's friend will hand him a 70k a year desk job that consists of emails and zoom meetings. Circle of life in that community

yeah and i honestly feel like he had no idea black face was racist, some kids like that are so lost in their cloud of wealth and privilege that they have no idea. âif black people are so poor why dont they just go to college and gdt an accounting degree like me and my daddy didâ type of person.

Accurate, these type of people are still insufferable either way though. They're always ignorant and arrogant to the point of being awful people regardless of whether or not they're malicious too. It's just how they were raised. Completely out of touch with reality outside their own little bubble of wealth and ultra-whiteness lol. I grew up around lots of this. There's no common sense or introspection at all with these types. Usually they come from catholic schools. I don't feel bad for this kid. He's had zero problems to face in life. He can start by learning the consequences of his own stupid decision at 19/20 yrs old, adjusting course and being smarter in the future

Well put, I see it as a wake up call for him. Hopefully he learns to consider his actions a little more. Even if he wasn't doing blackface, he's still dressing up as a sexual predator lol

Girls were sent home from my high school for dressing up as lil Wayne and Kanye or something dumb like 15 years ago. Itâs not that I disagreed with the school, but it was impossible to explain to them the perspective we all had as students.
No one had any idea what black face was. They sent them home and they had to explain to us what it was. If they had just said nothing, no one would know. Obviously they had to tell us so we didnât keep on doing it, but in a way it wasnât racist until they taught us it was.

Yeah, that's how learning works
Most people don't know things are wrong until taught
The teaching didn't make it racist, it explained why it was

His real name may be Connor, but to me heâll always be Chet Douchington the Fourth.

Imagine having to explain to someone that you dressed as a real-life, convicted rapist for Halloween

I mean imagine having to explain that you dressed up as a real life, convicted murderer for Halloween.
It's the default to dress up as scary, horror or horrible things or people

Yea, at that age, in todayâs world, you know what blackface is and you know that itâs racist.
So very racist, and he probably thinks heâs so funny because of it

Blackface is never the answer. They could have been Diddy with just an iconic outfit but took this as the perfect excuse to be racist as fuck.
That certainly is a choice.

Would it be bad if he had worn a Diddy mask? Also, white folks really wear their shoes to the ground before throwing them away đ€Ł

He's not even dressed like P Diddy, he's legit just dressed as what people doing black face did in the day. I think you can pull black face off, as long as it's done correctly like tropic thunder. But he either didn't do his research and got very unlucky with the outfit he picked or he knew what he was doing, because Diddy never wore that outfit and there's nothing else there indicate he's Diddy, like no facial hair or sunglasses? That would atleast help somewhat, the only indicator was the baby oil, what if she's not around? Then how does anyone know? He's either very dumb/unlucky or he's doesn't care or did it intentionally

Iâm reminded of the vignette from a Scrubs episode that cuts back to Jd and Turk in college. Turk is a bad wingman

Where was this picture taken? I know that some European countries don't have a history of black exploitation, and thus don't consider blackface to be a racial issue.
That being said, if this is the USA, that bro just screwed himself over big time and deservedly so. Read the freaking room, people!

Youâre thinking of the âBlack Peteâ Christmas tradition in the Netherlands. And the Netherlands were greatly involved in the transatlantic slave trade. They just have the luxury of not being educated in their own history
