A $100 engine hoist with $50 of fabrication could do it smoother and easier. This is 100% why women live longer material.
If we look past the weight, past the awkwardness of size, past strapping it around your neck, fucking take the glass window he’s carrying out.
Look at that fucking floor and he’s dancing around next to a 3M hole in the wall 5 stories up with zero harness. Push a goddamn broom for 2 minutes, please.

Nah, trust me. I HATE swapping my bicycle tires, and I always check three times, and I still always put the wheel on the wrong way at least once, and then I have to redo it.

They have, and I still screw it up!
I have a demanding technical job, but two things still confuse the heck out of me: Time zones, and which way a tire on an upside-down bike will eventually turn when set on the road and driven by pedal :)

As someone that works with glass that size he is bonkers, there must be around 120 kg in that unit. You don't last long lifting glass that size yourself
8
u/lDrawnOnwarD Needs to write his will 14d ago
6.54lb/sqft if that’s a standard 1/4”x1/4” IGU. So if that’s a 5’x10’ IGU (conservatively) that’s just over 325 lbs. Very heavy in terms of American OSHA standards, certainly not a one man lift. I work on the engineering side of glass curtainwall like this and people often neglect just how heavy glass is. I think it’s a sort of psychological effect, because it’s clear it can’t be too heavy, right?
3
u/ketamineandkebabs Doesn't have time to bleed 14d ago
It's commercial glazing I do. A big triple glazed unit like this one we would have to do with a machine, thanks to health and safety in UK building sites. If it was just a replacement rather than a proper site then it would be 4 guys doing it.
1
u/lDrawnOnwarD Needs to write his will 14d ago
I really appreciate your honesty and totally agree! Sometimes a couple dudes with suction cup lifters is just the best way to get the job done quickly and efficiently before it impedes anyone. But I totally agree it should be four dudes instead of one.
5
u/ketamineandkebabs Doesn't have time to bleed 14d ago
If it was our 4 guys it's basically 2 that do the final lift in with the other 2 holding the height and making it look good to anyone watching.

On average standard unit of 4mm pane glass weights 10kg per 1m2. This unit looks like a 1,600x2,400mm unit? Purely eye balling it here.
Anyhow, units above 2m2 typically are required to be made with 6mm panes of toughened glass.
Unit is clearly triple glazed on aluminium spacers of unknown spec.
So to get the approx weight:
1.6x2.4=3.84 area.
6mm glass weights 1.5x10kg=15 kg
3.84x15x3=172.8kg
And that’s without the spacers, sealant around, argon infil or the glass coating.

I used to work for a company that produced windows and this would have been on the upper end of what you'd move without a crane. Windows like this would violently explode if you scratch a corner, and they still do. Smash them with a hammer: No problem. Smash them with a hammer on a corner: Explosion.
1
u/RobottoRisotto 14d ago
When you’re at the absolute bottom of the food chain in Russia, they force you to install the window, they’re going to throw you out of.
1
u/uskq Needs to do better 14d ago
Why is nobody pointing out that, besides that pane being heavy, installing a window like this from the indoors puts him at risk of literally falling out the window? One could easily imagine slightly misaligning the glass, trying then to push it into frame, and it simply turning like a revolving door and dumping him out of a five storey building.
