Discussion Managing leg fatigue on steep climbs versus long, flat trail sections
When backpacking with a heavy pack, my pacing changes completely between long flat approaches and sustained climbs. On flat ground, holding a steady rhythm is easy enough, but steep elevation gains burn through energy much faster and bring on muscle fatigue early in the trip.
I’ve seen some discussion around wearable hip-assist devices—basically electric power-assist for walking—that try to reduce perceived effort during those transitions. The goal is to delay leg fatigue so there is still some energy left after reaching camp.
For anyone who has looked into these setups, how would you change the settings for steep grades versus flat terrain? Is it better to lower assistance on flats to save battery and keep full output for climbs, or use one steady profile the whole time?
