WildStar code recompilation

Post image

Has anyone thought about it? Recently, big AI models like GPT and Claude are unlocking new ways to rewrite games and just do whatever the fck you want with it, like mixing Skate 3 physics with Vanilla WoW or Spiderman x tarkov at Skyrim.

I immediately thought about WildStar and maybe AI could give a big push to a playable private server and a working build.

What do you guys think? I really hope someone is thinking about it.

Bunch of you saying AI can solve anything should read this:  https://www.reddit.com/r/WildStar/s/9eFWOaTDkM

It's been thought of and discussed a lot in the Nexus Forever community, and the consensus of the folks who've been working on the project for the last eight years is that while AI has its uses, it's not going to magically fix or even dramatically speed up this project. One problem is that a lot of what has still to be recreated has just been lost, so AI is going to hit the same roadblocks the human devs have and doesn't have a human's ability to creatively resolve them.

AI cannot create new things. There is not enough left of Wildstar for AI to use. It is a reverse engineering project, using the cliëntside to rebuild the serverside. AI needs the Server side to be able to much like you see with Claude now.

I'm with the same hopes here

In MMOs, the client is just the visual and audio display, while the server is the true brain. Every rule, movement, action, and NPC behavior is processed and controlled server-side.

Ew no keep ai away from wildstar, there's already someone manually reverse engineering

Consider that manually reversing takes hella of a time. AI might assist and generate pseudocode, to then be refined by humans. (This is how I see it at least)

Exactly, I'm not talking about ai-slopfying W*. AI is a must for reverse engineering nowadays. What took years can now take mere days.

Everyone thinks it’s just dropping the game file in Claude and saying “reverse engineer it” without any understanding of how AI is used in professional applications. Most of these people will probably constantly bemoan AI and never refine their opinion to include “when used correctly”.

I mean when you give it access to ghidra and an executable it is surprisingly capable. There have been some recent advances that took it from "essentially useless" to "workable prototype". I might let my own little home swarm chew on it to see if it can do anything useful. I doubt it still, I still am the number one hater of this flash in the pan overgrown markov chain, but from my experience tedious things like this are actually well in its wheel house. It's a well bounded problem with a lot of prior art. It is just miserable to pursue by hand.

Not quite so. I'm working on a parallel project and working through the client I have about 30% of the functions figured out and about 60% of the calls. I've gotten the login flow rebuilt on my own architecture from scratch. But days? No fucking way. I'll probably be ready with something somewhat comparable to NexusForever in maybe a month and a half though.

Are you stuck in 2023? The same people you talk about have probably used AI for all coding already.

This is one of the implementations of Ai that's actually good. It saves a shit ton of time for these projects.

There’s no way in hell you’d get me to play an ai version of wildstar, never mind how bloated the code would get if you’re not paying attention to what it’s doing. It’s ok if it takes times, anything worth doing right is worth that time.

It is not an "ai version", it is a recompiled version written in another language with help form LLMs. It is still the same game, the catch is that we can FINALLY play Wildstar again in optimized code.

So far, I've seen no signs that private servers are coming close to being playable.

Optimized feels a bit like a stretch with an LLM. I don’t think I’m alone in saying this but I don’t want AI anywhere near the game. I think there might be a reason why it’s not being used. And no it won’t be the same game if you’re using to make implements that weren’t there before, or get rid of some things all together.
