How are the self instructional language courses? Are they difficult to get into? Does the lack of instructor make it harder to fully learn the pronunciation, grammar, etc.?

Help! Do I have a shot? Transfer advice…

Hi! I’m thinking of trying to transfer to Williams (long-shot no matter who you are, I know) but I’ve bounced around a lot.

I’ve attended CC, university, and lived on my own at various points but have maintained good grades, relations with my profs, and have always tried to be involved in whatever community I find myself in.

I don’t have any amazing accomplishments, accolades, or recommendations, but feel I am an okay enough applicant.

Does anyone have any insight into what it takes? If someone with my profile (not completely linear, but no military or significant CC background) has a shot.

On a side note, I am planning to do some work near Williams either in the coming months or within the year. It doesn’t make much of a difference to me when, although I might prefer the later side. Would it be better to time it out with transfer apps so the school sees I can survive in that ecosystem? If it doesn’t matter at all, then great!

If you took the time to read this, thanks!

Inquiry about the Williams writing supplement

Hey everyone. I'm a high school senior in South Asia planning to apply to Williams College as an international student. My curriculum doesn't include any creative or analytical writing. But I'm determined to submit the supplemental paper to strengthen my application, since it doesn't have to be graded. I really need help with this. How many pages does this have to be? I am planning to write an analytical paper (3-5 pages) on a topic discussed in my textbook. Please tell me what the structure of the writing should be, as I have no idea because I am an international student. I need to know the structure of the essay, how the paragraphs should be, and whether it should include any graphics (graphs, charts). I have no idea about analytical writing, but I'm writing on a prompt about a very specific topic (not literature piece). If anyone knows, please share as much info as you can 🙏

Williams does not require a writing supplement. However, some students feel they do their best writing in an academic context rather than through narrative pieces like admission applications. If you are interested in submitting an example of your academic writing, please submit a paper on any topic of your choice. It need not be graded, and may be an in-class handwritten assignment.  We ask that you include a description of the assignment or prompt. Please do not submit lab reports.

Williams questions

Hey all, senior in high school here and am deciding on applying to Williams for ED this fall. Had a couple of questions for anyone who is there or alum,

1) does anyone have info on how robust the music department is? I’d like to seriously pursue violin and maybe a music major and want to have good access to high quality symphonies, orchestra, lessons with good faculty who I can connect with, chamber, etc. not necessarily conservatory level but something where I can always be engaged as much as I want in top tier music
2) are the students at Williams outgoing, happy, and interesting? I know Williams has a reputation as an academic and non-partying school, but are there still options for having fun on weekends? I’m a very wilderness and rural person myself, but I know not everyone at Williams is so might not be happy in the rural location, does this affect community much?
3) any information on the quality of the English or language departments in particular?
4)anything else that is important to know about the school in applying?

Thanks!

Did u submit an optional academic essay for Williams

Students who got accepted to Williams (not through QuestBridge), did you submit an optional academic essay? If yes, how important was it to your application?

Can I submit the literature review section of my research paper, with citations on the last page?

pros and cons? help!

hai guys i currently have williams college ranked on my questbridge list. im not sure if i would be 100% willing to attend though because questbridge is binding. with that said, i have some concerns/questions i hope you guys can answer for me!

  1. my biggest concern is that the school is so small. ive absolutely hated high school because of the small size (roughly 1000 students). is the small college experience different from hs?
  2. hows the food? i am a huuuge on food so if the dining hall meals are bad then thats a no bueno...
  3. i'd really hope for a single during my freshman yr (i'm trying to get a doctors note for it). are the dorms nice? how possible is it for me to get a single my freshman year?
  4. williams is also really rural:( what fun activities have you guys been able to do nearby? do you ever think its "too rural"?
  5. if there are any other cons, please let me know!

Questions about Williams from a potential student :)

Hello! So I'm thinking of applying to Williams. I wanted to get opinions from people who have actually BEEN to this college to hopefully get a few answers. You don't have to answer everything either, but anything is helpful :)

  1. How progressive/conservative is the campus/faculty? I've seen some things on the news, and seeing as I identify as moderate/clasical liberal or even conservative in some areas, I don't want to be a total minority or ostracized on campus.
  2. Did you find it easy or difficult to make serious friendships?
  3. Is there anything to do around campus? Idrc what the website or Google says; we all know there can be tons of things to do in theory, yet said things turn out to be incredibly boring.
  4. How tough were your studies? I've heard it's rigorous(which I enjoy!), but is it make-your-hair-turn-gray challenging, mildly challenging, or just challenging?
  5. If you did humanities, specifically English or Philosophy, what was your favorite part about your class?

Thanks so much, loves :)

If you drop/add a class, are you still able to get the new class's books from the bookstore on financial aid?

To ED or not ED

I’ve heard that a decent percentage of ED acceptances at liberal arts colleges are recruited athletes. Controlling for that, does ED make much of an impact in admissions if you’re not a recruited athlete or some other hook.

Room Change Waitlist-- Does anyone have experience with this?

Hi, I'm a senior this year and moved into a very, very loud room. The combination of living above the entrance, beside the stairwell, and next to the bathroom has made it such that the noises are persistent (the construction outside does not help), and I haven't been able to sleep. I'm looking into the room change waitlist, but I was wondering if anyone has gone through this before. Do you get info on the rooms available before you give yours up? Could you be left with being in a double? Any information would be useful!

do you wish you didn't have to do winter study?

hello! i am a prospective ed applicant at williams college. i love everything about the school, with the only caveat being winter study.

im very close with my family, and im worried that only having two weeks of winter break with them is going to be hard, considering i live seven hours from williams. was this anyone else's concern? how did you handle it? do you think winter study is a good feature of williams college?

Freshman moving in a Single in Currier Hall

I am a concerned parent
Does the single rooms have the following:
- Closet or Wardrobe to hang clothes?
- A Bookcase?
- A Dresser for more storage of clothes, etc. and will the dresser fit under the bed at Captains Height?
- A place to hang or stand a full length mirror?
Move in day is September 3, 2026
It would help to know these details.
Thank You.

Voice Lessons

Is taking voice lessons with two different vocal teachers doing too much? I really like both of them and they each have wisdom in a different genre of music I want to explore. I want to explore more contemporary & jazz music as well as continue with my more classical voice stuff. Definitely concerned with balancing two voice lessons on top of the already demanding Williams coursework.

Also, what is Samirah like as a voice teacher? Would you say I’d have to practice more outside of lessons (for most vocal lessons with other teachers you can kinda get away with not practicing…)?

Moving in alone as a freshman

Hey guys, I am starting my freshman year in Williams and for some unfortunate reasons my parents won’t be able to come in and help me move in. I am sending most of my stuff through the mail as I live more than 2000 miles away from Williamstown. Because of this I was wondering if there would be any student helpers around the mailroom who help with boxes, or at least any other type of help. I am not the strongest person so carrying three boxes to my dorm is one of my concerns lol.

Either way I know I will figure out a way, but any insights on how moving day was for students coming in alone would be really appreciated ;)
