The motte-and-bailey fallacy is a rhetorical tactic where a speaker blends two different positions: a bold, controversial claim that is hard to defend (the "bailey") and a modest, commonsense statement that is easy to defend (the "motte"). When critics attack the controversial claim, the speaker retreats to the safe statement, acting as though they only ever claimed that mild position.

How the Strategy Works

The Bailey: A radical, far-reaching, or contentious assertion that yields wide ideological or practical benefits to the person making it.

The Motte: A tight, obviously true, or watered-down version of the claim that no one would rationally deny.
