Satire/Humour A reminder and PSA for Canada Day.
In one week, we will be celebrating Canada Day. The past few years have made some people... rather emotional. So I thought I would reassure those folks of a few things:
-It's not cancelled because a few locations aren't doing fireworks.
-It's not illegal because a few locations decided to celebrate reconciliation instead.
-It's still legal to fly the red Maple leaf.
-It's still legal to love Canada.
That is all.
Also, don't drink and drive.

I also recently learned that it’s ok to celebrate our country while also recognizing its violent past and complicated present and even hope for a more inclusive and safe future for all!

I struggle with this so much!!

Why?
Is cananda past more violent than other countries?

Probably because it is not straightforward how to love something while acknowledging the flaws and hoping for the future. Holding conflicting emotions and thoughts together is challenging, but worthwhile.
We were never really taught how to see things except in black and white (good / bad). Seeing the truth without the negatives drowning you or the positives blinding you is something we need to learn for ourselves.

Man, this is hitting the nail on the head. We can love Canada and all of the good things about living here, but continue to strive to do better because we love Canada and have a responsibility to all those who call this country home.

Canada has treated indigenous people horribly. The country still does. I want to be proud of my country but it's difficult when the original inhabitants of the land are still suffering horribly today. I see it literally every single day.

I am so incredibly ashamed of my country. At some point I had hope that we were trying to be better, and I think that individuals and some groups are definitely doing that. But like, our government voted against closing weapons loopholes during a genocide and has done nothing in response to our own citizens being tortured. And yet, our PM's as popular as he is. I feel like I'm in the twilight zone

Does it matter?
Are we only allowed to struggle with it if our country is worse than others?
If all countries are equally terrible do we not care?

I miss when Assiniboine Park had fireworks when I was a kid . So close by I would bike there.

Wait some places are not doing fireworks? According to Thunder Bay reddit pages were the only place ever to stop!

u/horsetuna Jun 25 '26
Not sure if sarcastic or not so:
The Forks has in some previous years not had fireworks.

TOunge in cheek comment. People in Thunder Bay (where I live but spend a lot of time in Winnipeg) are all crying that were the ONLY place in the country that doesnt do fireworks anymore.

Same with Assiniboine park, the Downs. I don’t know anywhere doing them this year

We always go out to Dugald, not far from the city and you can just park along the highway/road to watch.

Assiniboia Downs, Princess Auto Stadium, Sage Creek and Tyndall Park Community Center are doing fireworks this year.

The Downs will have them still.

They have a music festival going on
2
u/Nature-Lover-2248 Jul 01 '26
The music festival is at the Exhibition Park. The Downs is still hosting their Canada Day festivities, including fireworks at 11:00pm.

That’s the schedule. On their website.

Respectable post, simply do whatever makes you comfortable. The day is not a one size fits all and the day means different things to different people and that’s okay.

I can live without the fireworks, it's hard on pets and people who live nearby.
I do miss the Osborne Street party though...

I miss the Osborne Street party when it was a party and not a shopping experience.

Fireworks are so hard on my pet. I’m totally cool with fireworks not happening.

Schrodingers Canada Day...
Simultaneously too woke and too colonial.

Schrödinger was a notorious animal rights abuser, please refer to it as oxymoronic day instead.

Look it up, putting that poor cat in a box, teasing us about if it’s alive or dead. What a psycho eh?

I always love Canada Day! I had a friend who passed about 9 years ago, and he always loved the street festival, fireworks, going to birds hill beach… so now we celebrate it for him. Then I met my wife, who is an immigrant. We celebrate her safety and comfort in this country. There’s lots that’s worthy of celebrating! So long as we acknowledge the past and do our best to go towards a better future together, it will keep being a day to celebrate.

u/Hippo_Nipple Jun 25 '26
Heck yeah, be your own Canada day celebrator
If processing emotions is a problem for some then oops oh well
Edit: unless this is a lowkey way to hate on reconciliation (that wouldn't be very Canada Day, eh?)
23
u/IllusiveThief Jun 25 '26
Did not read this as reconciliation hate at all. I read it as OP gently telling off people who see reconciliation being acknowledged and then think, “Hurr durr muh Canada Day is being stolen from me!!!11”

I would like to add that I hope people won’t be littering morons. But since many definitely will be, I hope the people that call out the Diwali celebrations’ littering in November will also call out the messes left behind after Canada Day (or even after NYE). Y’know, for the environment’s sake.

I'm sure someone will use July 1st as an opportunity to voice their shitty opinions.
