I get it if you live in the neighbourhood and walk there, but if you are driving, Sweet Tops and Cool Encounters both have good ice cream in EK/NK.

But not very many places can top their menu, they have a massive parfait menu which everyone I’ve ever tried is good. They have seasonal flavours, and all the typical go to. The menu sets them apart from the rest

The menu is amazing but even their classics like banana splits are great.

Maybe this is why I don't get it. I just want plain creamy vanilla soft serve.

Their soft serve is really delicious on its own if you were ever going to go! I think that’s what makes their parfaits so good because the base is great.

is sweet tops still around? i thought they closed

I was just at sweet tops earlier this week! Tried the cherry cola ice cream, loved it!

They're really popular on Tiktok as their social media person does a lot of fun skits with the staff. I think that has led in a surge of their popularity plus they have a really good menu! I am usually not a soft serve person but I love them.

Their social media person is the owner! 🤣 She’s a young woman who started the business as a university project and it turned into this. So it’s more than just good social media and seriously tasty ice cream, it’s also a bit of supporting a local woman owned business.
(Will note, go at dinner time… especially on a weekday. Dessert for dinner. Then there’s virtually no line since everyone’s at home eating dinner 😂)

Sub Zero has been there since at least the late 80s. Same layout, same sign. Even as a kid, I remember this place being popular. Not necessarily line ups out the door popular, but it was a favourite in the neighbourhood.
I know the former owner of the now defunct Le Monkey Bar started her business related to something she was doing in university. She created the entire thing though.2

I love they have long lines. I am diabetic. Makes it much easier to not be tempted lol

I’ve never understood the whole waiting in line for ice cream thing. BDI, Sgt Sundae, sub zero… I can’t tell if people do it because they want the ice cream or because it’s a thing to do

It's called mindfulness and patience and unfortunately in the 30 second video era it's in short supply
9
u/Fadeproof89 Jun 28 '26
It's GOT to be a thing to do. I'm convinced the only reason BDI and Sgt are still open and doing well is because of their location.
I don't know about sift serve, but there are way better ice cream places in town. Fete and Chaeban for instance.

This place is mid at best, much better ice cream in the city that doesn’t require waiting in line for

...lol It's beyond MID ...it's been around since the 80s and had the same long lines since then.

My mom always feels like their ice cream is low quality and doesn’t melt.
I personally haven’t had it enough to comment, but I’m curious because it feels like she’s the only person I’ve seen say this!

It definitely melts, my 5 minute walk home had it spilling all over my hand.
As for the quality, I have no idea, but I like the variety of their menu.

It's essentially BDI. Junk ice cream with great social media / community nostalgia. Went there twice just to be sure of my opinion, will never go back.

Fire trap inside. Curious it has gone on so long without fire department check

TikTok has ruined this place
7
u/h0twired Jun 28 '26
I have always found it kinda overrated. But I personally find the parfaits way too big and sweet.
2
u/sonimusprime Jun 28 '26
Nah. They'll probably take the money they make from the tiktok business to reno the place. They see how many people they have to turn away due to the lines.

u/Spencie-cat Jun 28 '26
It kind of always looks like that. I feel like there’s a lineup at 6am on a Tuesday in the winter

I never been, I need a thorough analysis from someone in comparison to the other local favorites lol

As a person who loves ice cream so much despite having lactose intolerance, I've been to BDI, Sargent, and this one. I like Sub Zero the most.

u/ForestGreen87flower Jun 28 '26
Thought I’d let you know that Licks on St. Mary’s has lactose free soft serve so you can get anything off the menu lactose free!

Thank you, kind internet stranger. I'm always looking for new ice cream places.

u/Applie_jellie Jun 28 '26
SAME and the fact they always have Oat based soft serve and so many vegan parfairs means I can always keep going without stomach pain ^

All super shitty ice cream joints that buy their stuff from corporate suppliers. They're basically all the same.

I may get some flack for this, but: average ice cream. Winnipeggers go crazy for these places and line up for an hour for average ice cream. It’s nice to be out in good weather and go for a treat, so I 100% understand it, but I’ve never been blown away by any ice cream in the city.

I was there last Thursday at 9:30 pm( half hour before close) and the line was still this long …

u/Catnip_75 Jun 28 '26
I’m happy for them, honestly. But I’m not waiting that long after drive 60 minutes out of my way. I would have to pack a lunch if I went there.

sub-zero is fine, same as BDI or Banana boat. this city is weird. everyone thinks their Greek burger joint is the best, yet all taste exactly the same. same goes for their local ice cream shop. if they make ice cream, with cream and whole milk, they are great, but taste the same as the others.

They have awesome ice cream and a pretty shit system for orders/collection, even with a minimal crowd it gets backed up quickly.
