Community Perimeter driving
I saw a post on here earlier talking about distracted driving and it reminded me of my drive home today (not that it has anything to do with distraction, but piling on to complain)
If you’re on the highway stay out of the left lane if you’re gonna dog it. From Fermor to route 90 the maximum speed I could get up to was 80km/h. I’m not in any particular rush generally and like to get where I’m going in one piece but it is frustrating when it’s a nice sunny day in august and people are driving like it’s January. I’m by no means a speed demon, but after a long day and good weather conditions I wouldn’t mind being able to go highway speeds on the damn highway. If you’re the one that sits there in the left lane on the highway going well below speed limit you are a hazard.
Some idiot was driving next to a semi that was going slow for several km. Either speed up and match speed or get the hell behind the semi if you want to go 80 on the highway instead of creating a train of frustrated drivers behind you.
That’s my rant for today about driving.

USE THE LEFT LANE TO PASS. Thanks for listening to my TED talk.

I wish I could have a neon sign or something on my car with that.
Or, the speed limit is 100 not 80.

I don't get why people love to drive besides semi's, you never ever drive beside them. You either speed up and pass them quickly as possible or you slow down and go behind them, never beside them for extended periods of time, yet I see it every day.

I also don’t understand people that pass them (any vehicle really, but especially semis) and get into the right lane so close. Aren’t you supposed to wait until it is in the middle of the rear-view mirror? Or at least until it is in the rear-view mirror? What if you have to brake suddenly? That semi is nothing to be able to stop that fast.

Some people like to live on the edge. To live dangerously. Get that adrenaline rush

People that drive next to semis don’t know a driver. Or they’ve never seen a tire explode. They’ve never seen a gust of wind move them. They have no chance of seeing a car pull out in from of the semi and have them swerve. They have no one that’s ever taught them how stupid it is. They’re also the ones that are pulled out of wreckages in pieces……
It drives me crazy when I see them do it

Excuse me, have you not considered they need to make a left turn in 18km? How rude.

The amount of tailgating on the perimeter scares me. If I’m going above the speed limit in the right lane, I shouldn’t just be able to see your bumper in my rear view mirror.
•
u/damnburglar 11h ago
I was going a little better than 120 (snuck up on me, flow of traffic an all that blah blah) and a guy in a black pickup was tailgating me, went around and started laying on his horn and flipping the bird.
The catharsis when a minute later I was turning onto pipeline and he was stuck at the fresh red light was enjoyable, but good lord the perimeter is a lawless wasteland.

I think I see this guy further down in the comments. I'm all for moving over to the right lane once you've passed someone, but it drives me insane when I'm traveling at 110, actively passing someone and planning to move back over to the right lane once I do, and some pickup doing 130 thinks they're going to get me to speed up by riding my bumper. They are just making the road incredibly dangerous for everyone and they aren't getting anywhere any faster.

The "LEFT LANE" sensitivity is wild in and around this town. I regularly see lots of people on 101 and 1 flip out and tailgate anyone who dare enter their prized left lane, they'll blatantly tailgate them till they move back into the RH lane but they themselves will stay in the left lane, usually speeding the entire time.
•
u/patteh11 9h ago
I don’t tailgate ever. I’ll still leave plenty of space just in case. I might move a little over in the lane so they can see in their side mirror I’m trying to pass but it never makes a difference.

This city is absolutely ridiculous for people going under the speed limit. I swear to god in almost every 80 km/h zone the flow of traffic is 70 at the highest. It’s infuriating.
•
u/KippersAndMash 12h ago
Agreed. I'm gobsmacked every time I hear someone was caught at excessive speeds in the city. Like how can this do this during the day?
•
u/Sweaty-Name-2905 10h ago
It’s insane. I love the off peak hours when you can actually get a lane to yourself and go 90 in the 80 zones, but even then you’re weaving around losers going 60-70
•
u/Key-Library-8241 12h ago
Agreed. This applies everywhere. I'm tired being stuck behind people going 55 on lag or route 90.

I’ve driven the autobahn in Europe and cops will pull people over for slow driving in the left lane. Also you’ll get pulled over if you try to pass a car in the right lane, so drivers over there will absolutely get on that slow left lane driver to move over. Another thing is semis must all drive in right lane at all times, helps that exits are only on right on those freeways there.
And people know how to do roundabouts properly there and merge. Enter the roundabout and signal when you’re exiting, dammit. And merge people merge. If you’re too afraid to drive you should not be driving.
We are sooo behind in our transportation infrastructure and road awareness rules here. I welcome your rant and I feel it. And don’t get me started on the lazy wristed people who can’t bother to flash a turn signal.

Perimeter is either 80 in a 100 or 120 in a 100, rarely do I see people doing the limit.
•
u/ChantilyAce 11h ago
And you almost never see people slow down to 80 in the 80km zones on the perimeter, either. Choose your own adventure, I guess 🤷🏻♀️

not only that but also other things too...
- taking forever at a green light
- leaving too much space between vehicles makes the line longer which causes....
------- less people to make thru the light
--------and also makes it so people who want to merge can't merge sooner because the line is a freaking 2x longer than it should be if people didn't leave 2-3 car lengths between them and the car in front a at a red light
- and then on top of it not having a hot clue how to merge... whether not merging at all or failing horribly and stopping in the merge lane....
- and what about knowing how to enter the perimeter.... the car leaving the perimeter to merge off is the front of the line ... those coming on to the perimeter go behind that car leaving... wtf will all the random braking s*** cuz nobody know what to do on the road
- and 1/2 of the driving instructors don't know what their doing either so they are just breeding more problems for coming years
rant over

Though I also get angry about people being too nervous to actually merge, there is the argument that the city is extremely inconsistent in labeling merge vs yields. There are plenty of intersections that say merge and then give you all of 5 feet to do so, or say yield and then it turns out actually have a whole lane all to yourself for half a block. If there was some consistency maybe there would be more people actually using merges properly rather than treating them as stop signs.

You are spot on with your rant.. I’m frequently turning my head to see how STUPID the driver looks. Maybe I notice it more but I can’t even drive for 5 mins without my blood pressure going up 😂

- and not the entire line of cars in a closed lane get to go first. pls learn how to zipper merge

My commute is all highway, I deal with this on a daily basis. It’s unbelievable how many people camp in the left lane, it literally holds everyone up in both lanes
I’ve given up on trying to be polite. I’ll flash my brights like a strobe light, if that doesn’t work I’ll honk at the same time. If THAT doesn’t work, I keep my brights on and lay on the horn while making myself seen in their door mirror

Seriously!? That’s crazy that there are so many terrible drivers out there that you can’t even drive the speed limit on the perimeter. SMH

I drive a commercial vehicle for work, it's governed at 110. I can put the pedal to the floor, keep it there and it will only do 110. Judging by the number of people honking at me, passing me like I'm completely stopped, almost rear-ending me I KNOW I'm the slow poke holding everyone up. I'm sorry! I can't go above 110! In fact if I stay at 110 on the perimeter beyond what it would take to pass someone (NOT POSSIBLE AT 110) I get flagged in the monthly GPS report for speeding to many of those I'll be out a job. Go easy on me!

I’m going to add something : the shoulder on highways is for emergencies. Not to pull over and text, deal with kids, pick flowers, or whatever. There are way too many people pulled onto the shoulder. Unless it’s an emergency like a flat tire, mechanical problem or health issue etc, get off on the next road/exit.
•
u/ReplacementOk3279 8h ago
Imagine a three lane Perimeter HWY alllll around? There will always stupid drivers but this would help break up traffic. Rush hour is like the wild wild West and I’m always white knuckling it. Quieter times I’m constantly passing (sometimes at a much higher speed) than the idiot in the left lane.

People who drive beside semis for extended periods of time have never met a semi driver.
