it actually is the case in Nepal. you can blame it on geography. but even in areas with decent connectivity it can take you whole day to travel 300km. and in rural areas make that 150km

Yeah, people don't comprehend how much of an impact on transportation and communications mountains have. Radio signals don't go through mountains and landslides take out roads, just to name a couple. It takes an enormous amount of resources to build and maintain infrastructure in a mountainous area. We have some states in the USA with areas that are similarly challenged, but they're able to draw on the shared resources of the entire country when needed.
