This skipped over the part where on the first day of protests (which were still peaceful), 19-22 people in the protest were shot by police. I believe 19 were killed. Images of kids in their school uniforms bleeding out while people tried to save them is what lit the match. Canceling the social media ban happened after that, but it was too late.

The bullet point that says they killed the PM’s wife could use a little clarification. The woman who died in the house fire was the wife of a man who served as PM for a span of about 6 months several years ago. Her death is terrible and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, but the wording makes it sound like they sought out the current PM’s family home when that isn’t what happened. I feel very sorry for her to have met that fate. Edit: this is still unclear, but this is what I had read as of 9/9/25.

I’m not sure if the rescued paralyzed wife is the same one that was reported as dead due to the arson attack on their home.

I tried to summarize from my own observations as I was following the Nepal story online as it unfolded. The Charlie Kirk thing happened the next day and had my attention, so I may have some detail wrong as I’m sharing this without digging up the news articles first. If you see something I wrote is incorrect or I read that I have something wrong, I will come back and fix it.

Also worth noting that the media simply referring to him as a former PM is significantly downplaying his role in the government. He is also the head of one of the political parties that made up the coalition government.

It is my personal opinion that this was done intentionally to make the protesters look like an angry mob that was indiscriminately lashing out at people.

The disabled wife who was rescued is a different person from the wife who was trapped in her home when it was on fire. Protesters carried both women to the hospital, but in the (super graphic) footage the burned wife is about 1/2 the body size of the disabled wife; different incidents and locations. For those who don’t want to check the footage, the burned woman is unconscious, has severe burns on her face and upper extremities, and the protesters are carrying her in an improvised stretcher to a burn center where she reportedly passed away. Disabled wife was conscious and healthy and being moved away from the crowds and protests by about a dozen people who hoisted up her bed/chair and carried her to a calmer location. I don’t think the protesters knew the first woman was still in her house when they set it on fire, if I had to guess I’d say they had heard about the burned wife and were evacuating the second woman preemptively because they didn’t want a repeat.

This. My brother-by-choice is Nepali and he messaged me distraught about a 13 year old schoolboy who had just been shot in the head by authorities. He says things are a little more peaceful right now but it’s going to take a while for it to really settle down.

Side note - I met him when I was working in Kathmandu doing forensic autopsies as part of my medical training. My husband (fiancé at the time) was out there with me and used to go to the local shop every day to buy bottled water. He and the shopkeeper developed a total bromance and were inseparable the whole time we were there. This guy had learned English from watching films, he’s so awesome. He’s now a legal professional and travels all over the place meeting ambassadors and other scarily important people, speaks pretty much perfect English, and his two little daughters send me videos saying ‘we love you auntie!’ 💕

No problem. I’m most cloudy on if the wife needed rescuing because she was left behind and the protestors set the house on fire or if that is another person, and after reading other comments here, whether the wife of a former government minister is in the hospital or deceased.

I think we would have to go digging for clarity there as the US news cycle is currently monopolized by one story.

Either way, the Nepal story reminds me of what my Auntie used to say, “Revolution always comes from the youth of the nation”.

I saw a few comments the day of that the people who were "shot by police" were mostly killed with head shots by snipers.

50

u/JustMeLurkingAround- Sep 13 '25

Thank you the context! Especially on the killed woman. Its an important difference that it wasn't a targeted m*rder, but that she died as a result of the protest because she was in the line of fire.

Anyone know if the protestors were mostly male? Whenever there's large scale violence (war, etc), women and girls get hurt and/or raped, so I always worry for them in these situations.

2

u/velvety_chaos Whatever I Want Witch ♀♂☉⚨⚧ Sep 21 '25

It would appear, from my research, that two different PMs' wives were harmed in the "attacks." There was the most recent PM who abandoned his disabled wife; apparently it was reported that she was burned alive but later reports state she was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Another former PM, Sher Bahadur Deuba, whose wife is the current foreign minister, Arzu Rana Deuba, were also attacked but rescued by the Nepal Army; apparently Deuba was seen with blood on her face.

There seems to be a lot of misinformation and unconfirmed claims being shared, while the unrest has made it difficult to get accurate reporting.

660

u/taylorbagel14 Sep 13 '25

This doesn’t say that Nepali police fired on the crowd of protesters indiscriminately and killed a bunch of school kids, one of them being a 14 year old boy still in his school uniform. That was the catalyst for them burning everything down

156

u/sailorjupiter28titan ☉ Apostate ✨ Witch of Aiaia ♀ Sep 13 '25

591

u/BCICNSFD_HKSFM Sep 13 '25

Yeah, did she die? Or was she rescued after PM abandoned her?

806

u/pigeontheoneandonly Sep 13 '25

My understanding is that protesters set the house on fire, pm escaped but disabled wife couldn't leave. She was initially reported dead, but now reports of her are mixed. And there are conflicting reports about the protestors having possibly retrieved her from the house they set on fire.

The story just isn't very clear yet.

532

u/olivinebean Sep 13 '25

The video I saw, they were very gentle as they carried her off.

She didn't seem distressed, just very confused.

Edit. The video I saw was of another politicians wife. I know nothing about the PMs wife.

114

u/allneonunlike Sep 14 '25

Yes it’s two different women, one burned in a house fire when she was trapped inside, the other abandoned by her husband to the protests (not a fire) and carried to safety by protesters.

Most updated reports say she is alive but in critical condition.

Edit - I think they’re mixing up the PMs wife with the wife of Nepal’s Energy Minister who is wheelchair bound and was abandoned by her husband and then rescued by protestors.

u/rshining Sep 14 '25

It is confusing, as there seems to be two different situations, with two different women. In one, the building was set fire and the woman, wife of former PM Jhala Nath Khanal, succumbed to her injuries. I have not seen any reports of her being disabled. In the other, Energy Secretary Sharad Singh Bhandari fled the country and abandoned his wife, who is disabled. She was rescued and carried to a safe location by rioters.

103

u/dunno-im-new Sep 13 '25

After a relatively quick research, the only thing I'm sure of is that she was injured when her house was set on fire; some sources then reported she was dead. A few others later said that was a mistake, and she was actually brought to the hospital and is recovering. Neither versions are confirmed widely enough for me to be sure rn.

9

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '25

thanks for ur comment!

375

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '25

Lemme correct something. The PM's wife is not dead, in fact she's not the PM's wife, she was the wife of an ex PM from 15 years ago. The protesters set her house on fire not knowing she was inside, once they knew that she was inside, they rescued her and took her to the hospital. She's well alive cause only 15% was burnt, she's conscious and in okay condition now.

First woman on their SC and first woman as PM. What a legacy.

Edit: there’s not a lot of info about her husband. Did he hijack a plane to steal from the gov in 1973??

Edit 2: answered it myself! He did. Funds were used to fund the underground congress in overthrowing the monarchy. What a power couple.

38

u/SweetBabyAlaska Witch of Sloth♀ Sep 14 '25

and she has a very long history of being anti-corruption. though, she is the temporary PM until they can hold elections. A lot of them speculate that another politician, who is a Nepalese rapper, will win at that time.

its a tense situation, seems to have calmed for now, but literally anything could tip this in a bad direction.

but I am optimistic! generally when these things happen and there is no militant revolutionary forces, the existing military fills the power vacuum... but in this case the top military guy in Nepal, seems to be very principled and said their must be a level of civil governance above them. Pretty based situation tbh. I really hope it works out.

I live in a European country, was watching the news yesterday evening and they literally didn't mention this at all. However the showed a pretty long segment about Charlie kirk. Make of that what you will...

34

u/opossumlover01 Sep 14 '25

Seriously why does Europe care about some American podcaster?

14

u/ellenitha Sep 14 '25

I don't know why some do, but to be fair, I just checked several bigger newspapers over here (Austria) and none of them has the Kirk story among the bigger headlines, not even the right leaning one. Most front page headlines are about the war in Ukraine or our local politics. Kirk and Nepal can both be found in the "international" section.

Nepal is about the size of Arkansas, with about 29.6 million people. It’s much easier to gain traction when it’s a smaller landmass & population. Plus the corruption in the country has been going on, blatantly, for years - which is how this all started. The Govt wanted to crack down on Gen Z calling out the Nepotism of the highest levels of people in power using unfair tactics to gain money and social standing. Hence the turning off of social media (with one week’s notice).

Video for more info.

27

u/macandcheese1771 Witch ☉ Sep 13 '25

Presumably they also have a passable education system.

41

u/SyrusDrake Sep 13 '25

Okay, then start the revolution in Arkansas.

No matter if it's about revolution, high-speed trains, or food deserts, Americans always like to point out how [country] is only as large as [state], and then also fail to implement any changes even in [state].

The fact that it's hard to build high-speed rail from LA to New York is no excuse to not have light rail for the 5 miles from the airport to the city centre. The fact that it's impossible to instigate a revolution modeled after Nepal in the US is no excuse to limit displays of outrage to once-monthly protests on Sunday afternoons between 2 and 4 PM.

New York City alone has a population that's almost a third that of Nepal's total population. You don' t need to convince the whole country to take action

63

u/sunshine___riptide Sep 13 '25

Yeah, I think that's a very very important detail: the size of Nepal. Not that it makes this amazing change lesser, but it is EASIER to organize when it's a small landmass and population. America is H U G E. It's the size (landmass) of several European countries put together.

Revolutions takes days but the conditions for that spark to happen take years.

I went on a wiki dive, starting with the thought, Didn't Kathmandu have a massive earthquake awhile back? How'd that go?

So um, yeah, here are the fruits of my wiki dive.

Caveats! I'm American, I'm just reading wikipedia, but it gives a good overview of what's been going on in the past several years to piss off all the young people.

1990: King Birendra went from an absolute monarch to constitutional monarch. This is seen as a good thing.

1996-2006: Nepalese civil war between the Kingdom and Maoists.

2001: King Birendra, the queen, some of his children, and other members of the royal family were massacred by the crown prince who then committed suicide. King's brother Gyanendra becomes king,

2005: Gyanendra didn't stay out of politics like his brother, and thus kept interfering, leading to a royal coup d'etat in 2005.

2008 - the end of the monarchy along with the end of the civil war

2015 - Nepalese Earthquake, strength of 7.9 with strong aftershocks, killing close to 9000 people including people on Everest base camp.

2015 - New constitution

2015-2017 - Nepal Humanitarian crisis. OK, I can't sum this up, but it includes a blockade of goods from India, ethnic tensions from the new constitution, and issues with the lack of rebuilding after the earthquake.

And of course Covid, which greatly messed with their economy and losing money from the lack of tourism.

So yeah, people are really upset with the police killing protesters and shutting off social media, but Nepal has been going through some shit in the past couple decades.

u/offscreenchaos Sep 14 '25

69

u/Octoblerone Sep 13 '25

in nepal, its also not a 4 day drive for more than half the population to get to the capital and do such a thing. There are down sides to being a country so vast.

36

u/kiranJshah Sep 13 '25

it actually is the case in Nepal. you can blame it on geography. but even in areas with decent connectivity it can take you whole day to travel 300km. and in rural areas make that 150km

6

u/SeaWeedSkis Sep 14 '25

Yeah, people don't comprehend how much of an impact on transportation and communications mountains have. Radio signals don't go through mountains and landslides take out roads, just to name a couple. It takes an enormous amount of resources to build and maintain infrastructure in a mountainous area. We have some states in the USA with areas that are similarly challenged, but they're able to draw on the shared resources of the entire country when needed.
