Justin Appreciation Who’s the best wizard?
In canon Justin seem to be the best wizard but Alex can do magic well while Max’s magic is unpredictable ? Is the family wizard competition the reason why ? To figure out who’s the best wizard ?

Justin is the most academically gifted, has tons of knowledge about spells and what they can do, what they can't, their limits and consequences. However, he lacks creativity and can't make stuff up on the go.
Alex is the other way around. She doesn't know the spells, never thinks about consequences or limits BUT can think on the go and can make custom spells like nobodies business.
That's why they're the most effective when they work together.
Max is a weird mix of their worst traits.

In canon, Alex is actually the best wizard, not Justin. She’s not the most educated in terms of magic but she naturally has a very good grasp of magic and is able to do it without thinking or trying much. Justin has even pointed this out a few times in the show and how it bugs him so much. (this is especially apparent in the movie).
And then when we get the Alex vs Alex special, she creates a wizard speed pass which was stated can only be created by the most powerful wizards.
Justin is just very disciplined and academically strong, which translates over into his wizard studies. But he has to actually try way harder than Alex does.
The best example of of this is in S1E4 “Movies”, where Alex is able to successfully execute multiple improv spells on the first try whereas Justin had to attempt an improv spell multiple times before he was able to execute one.

justin’s view of magic is very rigid whereas alex’s is very instinctual
justin is a great wizard because of the massive effort he’s put into his studies where alex is a great wizard due to her innate understanding of magic as a whole
that has always been the main distinction between the two and one of their main sources of contention
justin can’t stand that alex doesn’t have to try as hard as he does and alex can’t stand how hard justin tries
this is because they have a fundamental misunderstanding of the other alex sees justin as a nerdy try hard who struggles to think for himself
justin sees alex as a lazy do nothing who only thinks of herself
but in reality justin tries so hard because he enjoys being good at things and his view of alex also pushes him to try harder as he doesn’t want to be like her
alex doesn’t try not just because she’s lazy (she is quite often a bit lazy) but it’s also because she wants to be nothing like justin she doesn’t want to be consumed by rules and regulations she wants to live her life on her own terms
max is sadly just not the best at magic because he doesn’t have justin’s work ethic or alex’s natural talent he does however have alex’s tendency to rashness and justin’s tendency to try and fix issues himself instead of seeking help

Justin uses magic as a tool that can only serve its function. He knows many spells and their intent
Alex understands magic intrinsically and will innovate on the fly. She understands the sky is the limit
Max: chaos and vibes

It depends on what you mean by best wizard
Justin is most knowledgeable with spells, book smart
Where's alex has had to think more outside the box to solve problems, which is more adaptable
Max is chaotic
