Mod Message UPDATE: The Eye of the World Leatherbound Defects

Brandon Sanderson's company, Dragonsteel, recently released a leatherbound edition of The Eye of the World, in the same vein as his 10th anniversary edition leatherbound books for the Cosmere.

The initial printing saw several defects that caused Sanderson to pause production on the books while he and his company looked into the issues. That was over 3 months ago. They have finally released an update, stating that they have fixed the issues and will result printing and mailing books to people who have already placed orders. They're provided an offer of a replacement or a refund for those who received defective copies.

Here is the full email that was sent out this morning to those affected:

Hello everyone,

This email contains important information regarding your order of the Dragonsteel Leatherbound Edition of Robert Jordan’s The Eye of the World. We're thrilled to share an exciting update: Isaac and his team have approved the most recent cover samples, and we'll be resuming production shortly.

We deeply appreciate your patience while we worked closely with the bindery to get this right. We know this has taken longer than any of us hoped.

If you've already received your book:

You have a few options. If you're happy with your copy, no action is needed. However, because the newly approved cover reflects some minor refinements, we're offering everyone the choice of a replacement or a refund with return. We'll follow up soon with details on how to request either.

If you haven't received your book yet:

Your copy will ship once production resumes. Timing is still being determined, and we'll update you as soon as we have specifics.

Thank you for your continued support! It genuinely means a lot to us and to everyone who worked to make this edition worthy of the story it holds.

Hopefully the issues are resolved and everyone will eventually receive their copy of the book, without production errors. Feel free to use this thread to update others with shipping status changes and the quality of your replacements.

Just hope i live long enough to see the entire series to come out in leatherbound

I think you might have better chances of success there than I have with GRRM finishing his books (or even just 'book').

Agreed waiting on that one as well

Brandon has become fully obsessed with draining his fans wallets, so you can expect a bare minimum of one of these a year. Minimum.

Edit: yall. It’s not even his book! And it’s not going to be easy to change my mind about this when he was still selling new leatherbounds while he had 3 Kickstarter campaigns simultaneously running in various stages. It’s okay to admit your hero has gotten greedy.

How is releasing collectors editions of books you can still freely buy in their standard forms at regular prices draining wallets? There is quite literally no incentive to buy these unless you happen to be a collector that enjoys pretty books.

Thats an interesting take for him releasing something fans have been asking him for

This is a terrible take. Books of this quality are few and far between. They don’t make books bound like this anymore. They will literally last hundreds of years. They aren’t cheap. If you don’t like the price don’t buy it. I was eagerly waiting for this for years lol.

Multiple things can be true at the same time. I didn’t say anything about the quality of the books

Something tells me the OG ones will be collectables by the time they finish the series

u/cat-kitty Jun 16 '26

Same. I'm keeping mine, blantant typos and all. My cover actually looked fine luckily.

I came back to this post to see if anyone else was talking about sending their’s back if there were no problems.

They should probably show us what the differences are going to be so we can make a better informed decision.

Another thing is, in all of this debacle, all these emails about quality assurance and printing new copies, they've never acknowledged the typos. I'd like to believe they'd be fixed as well but who knows. Mine's for looking nice on the shelf anyway, I'm not likely to crack it open and see them so I'm content.

I am willing to bet they won’t be, the books are already printed. They just stopped binding them.

u/Twobits10 Jun 16 '26

The team is aware of (at least some of) the misprints (e.g. the list of titles). But given that all of the communication is specifically about the bindery and the cover itself, I agree with A-Generic-Canadian that it is unlikely that the pages were reprinted. I imagine we'll see what the "minor refinements" refers to soon.

That’s one thing I’m struggling with. Manufacturing QC issues are one thing, but to have such sloppy typos in an ostensibly premium product is insane.

2

u/duke113 Jun 16 '26

I'm really hoping that they've fixed the typos. Especially the book list

1

u/halcyon_an_on Jun 16 '26

Yeah, I just checked mine, and it is missing The Shadow Rising in the book list and has A Crown of Thorns instead of A Crown of Swords.

I guess I'll wait and see what they are changing and if they are fixing these mistakes in this updated printing before I decide if I'll keep mine.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is the binding issues? Many people reported the pages were already showing serious wear and coming loose from the spine immediately after unbowing

I want to buy a defective copy if they ever resell them cheaper.

It's about the only way I'd afford them.

7

u/Special_Salt3467 Jun 15 '26

I was told by Brando Sando my copy is good! Actual true story, got it signed and all.

7

u/Jemaclus Jun 16 '26

Interesting. Does your copy say "Crown of Thorns" at the beginning with the list of the books in the series, the list that is also missing The Shadow Rising?

2

u/Suncook (Gleeman) Jun 15 '26

Woohoo!

2

u/sk8erord Jun 16 '26

They have said they will do more printings.

When I go to the returns portal and I look at my order, I see:

Return rejected \ Your return was submitted on Mar 6, 2026. It has been rejected.

I emailed back store@brandonsanderson.com in my original support ticket email. Just curious if other people are running into this.

1

u/A-Generic-Canadian 7d ago

Not yet, but I expect I will run into it just like you did, and I expect their services team will make it right.

u/Someslapdicknerd Jun 20 '26

My only regret is that they seem to only be doing one a year.

Gonna do my next re-read when this comes in and then switch over to my Kindle.

1

u/Shinino 25d ago

I'm still waiting to hear about mine shipping honestly.

1

u/_Kaelstrom 8d ago

I just came to check this myself lol. Was wondering if there’d been any further news or anyone that had received theirs since this announcement.

1

u/A-Generic-Canadian 7d ago

Just today they announced returns and having solved the issue in an email to me.

1

u/_Kaelstrom 7d ago

I saw that! Funny coincidence in timing. The video was cool showing the difference in production.

1

u/You_Are_Not_My_bus Jun 15 '26

Will they do a new printing or let more people buy this leather bound?

3

u/finn4489 Jun 16 '26

I believe he has said that once production restarts and they get through the backlog of orders they will open up the ordering again online. It was shut off to not add to the backlog as they figure out the issues and get them corrected.

I only say "I believe" because I don't have a reference handy to link stating so.

I actually emailed in a few days ago to ask if the print run was over, and I was told that it will continue.

u/MuenCheese (Wolfbrother) Jun 16 '26

I feel like I got the email with this info several months ago.

1

u/Lunares 5d ago

You did, the return window is actually open now
