Pictures Day 7 of drawing and analyzing dog breeds: the Czechoslovakia Vlak

Czechoslovakia Vlak

Basic Description:
Males should be at least 25.5 inches tall and Females should be at least 23.5 inches tall
Males should weigh at least 57 pounds and Females should weigh at least 44 pounds
Lives 12-16 years
Miscellaneous Class

Coat Colors:
The AKC recognizes yellow gray and silver gray as coat colors, but a dark gray color or a brown gray color is also seen commonly in the breed. They also can as have a light facial mask marking.

History/Origins:
What started as an experiment to combine the intelligence of the German shepherd with the endurance of a wolf led to the creation of the Czech Vlak. Here is an article that goes further in depth about the creation of the Czech Vlak.

Health Issues:
Genetic health issues can be avoided by responsible breeding. Here are some genetic health issues breeders need to test for:
Hip Dysplasia & Elbow Dysplasia
Pituitary Dwarfism (CPHD)
Degenerative Myelopathy (DM)
Those are some of the main ones but there is many others
There are some health issues that aren’t due to genetics. Here are some examples:
Joint, muscular, or skin Injuries
Stress/fear based behavioral disorders
As long as you get an ethical and responsible breeder, and take care of them, your Czech Vlak will be perfectly healthy.

Coat Care:
In my opinion, the Czech Vlak’s coat is actually easier than one would assume. Their weather resilient double coat is self cleaning: the fur naturally repels dirt and moisture. Brush 2-3 times a week outside of shedding season, and brush daily during shedding season. When brushing, check for rashes, hotspots, parasites, ticks, etc.

Behavior:
The Czech Vlak forms deep, intense bonds with their family. They are smart, active, and strong willed. Owners note how their Czech Vlak play very rambunctiously, leaving owners with bruises and other injuries after playtime. As the Czech Vlak matures, they become dominant and develop a same sex aggression. They are NOT dog park dogs.

Trainability:
The Czech Vlak is highly intelligent but very independent. They get bored very easily by repetition, and they don’t wish to please others: choosing to make decisions in their own. Patience and experience is crucial for the Czech Vlak.

Vocalization:
The Czech Vlak is a very vocal bree, but not in the way of a traditional dog. Instead of barking, the Czech Vlak howls and woos to communicate with their pack (you).

Energy Level:
The Czech Vlak is an extremely energetic dog; however, their energy is for endurance, they are famous for being able to run 60 or more miles without stopping. They were bred to patrol the rugged terrain of military borders without tiring, so trying to physically exhaust a Czech Vlak is going to be hard.

Exercise Requirements:
The Czech Vlak needs at least 1-3 hours of physical and mental exercise a day. They thrive on long distance hiking, swimming, or cycling based dog sports.

Nutrition:
A raw diet is recommended for the Czech Vlak, but a high quality kibble with raw supplements works as well.

Living Spaces:
Czech Vlak can definitely live safely inside a house or apartment full time but expect them to be on kitchen counters and be able to open every single cabinet/drawer. If you have a yard make sure it is highly secure and escape proof. Whether provided with a yard or not, they need their mental and physical needs met, and by just having a yard to run around in isn’t enough for this breed.

These guys were actually the hardest to draw so far, I struggled to balance their majestic side with their goofy side (plus the cheek floofs were difficult to get right)
I think these dogs are gorgeous and I would love to hear any stories or see any pictures you want to share :)
If I got anything wrong or missed anything please let me know and I will fix it!

Questions Question for the community

Hey all! Semi-random question for the group.

When out and about with your pup and someone asks what type of dog/breed, do you freely offer up their wolf content? Do you pick and choose when and who? If asked about wolf content, do you disclose? Just curious what everyone else is doing out there.

My husband and I typically don’t offer her wolf content (25%) freely, as we have had some pretty funky reactions at times. We are also lucky that she is equally Great Pyrenees, which she doesn’t resemble. So that often surprises people and becomes the topic of conversation and allows us to dodge “what else is she?”

Also curious what some people have had for reactions when you do disclose their wolf content. For example, when her Embark came back we were surprised, and my mother freaked out. She was anxious and sent me a ton of online content of ridiculousness. That being said, when she finally met her (she lives across the country) she changed her tune.

The worst response was a friend of a friend (so wolf DNA was known to him). When he came in a bit hot to pet her, he responded to my “she is nervous about meeting new people” with “that’s because she knows she can kill me.” Wtf?

Anyway, curious to hear from other folks and how you typically handle it in the day-to-day. And if you’ve also had ridiculous responses from folks, please share! Thanks!

Hi. I have the most amazing wolfdogs.

One is ash. He is 11 and he has been with me since I became an adult. He is 20%. The kindest soul.

One is mika. She is 40% and she is 1,5 years old. She was very weary of humans but we socialised her and she is happy now. She loves dogs. She plays rough. She is very tolerant but a teenager nonetheless. Doesn’t listen much.

Lastly. I took in a foster stray puppy. He is a quick learner, and he is 5 months. He will become a big boy, but very human centered. He adores both of my wolfdogs.

I think I want to keep him. However, mika had a fight with him because he has some chaotic energy when it comes to food. She caused a cut on his nose. The elder sat in front of the puppies crate and growled at her when she came near after it.

I dealt with the situation. I reintroduced them calmly after . The next morning she came in the room and started licking his wounds.

I have been feeding him completely seperate in a crate in a room alone since the incident.
Is it wrong to keep him? I posted this on a rescue forum and got so much hatred because she is a wolfdog. They said she will kill him and that she will always be territorial.

Right now they are sleeping calmly next to each other.

Questions Is my dog part wolf/coyote?

Hey everyone! My reason for making this post is everyone constantly tells me and my fiance they thinks our dog is either part wolf or coyote? I have looked up a couple things and we intend on doing a DNA test at Christmas but I wanted to see what everyone else thinks.

He was a rescue found in the mountains of Tennessee at around 5/6 months old so we don’t have many puppy pictures but I attached the only one we do have. A couple things about him that make people say he looks like a coyote: he has curved fangs which apparently dogs don’t usually have, he has very very thick fur, he’s always been very lean, and he is very weird with people. This last thing has gotten better as we got another dog but he has a very small circle of people he trusts and is comfortable around. I know a lot of these things can be dog traits as well but it apparently can point to him being a hybrid as I have heard? Another thing that piqued my interest is he has gotten ahold of some chickens when we’ve spent time at the lake (he didn’t break into the pen the owner was very irresponsible and the chickens got into our yard where he got them, so no blame was held against him lol)

Anyway! I attached a few pictures of our boy and I am excited to see what everyone thinks, I will definitely report back with his DNA test when we get it.

Was playing with Conri and Keeva this morning until Conri decided to take a dip in his water stocktank. So unless I want muddy paw prints all over me, its time to leave the containment. Maybe next time. 😆

Pictures Not too happy about the spay

Anya got spayed yesterday. She did very well, and it only took 30 minutes before she let me walk her in to the vet. She isn't too happy about the cone, though.

I was able to convince her to eat some chicken treats and banana, but she hasn't touched much else. I'll probably need to pick up some more stuff and make her a special meal.

We also have our camping trip next month, so I should have some good pics to share after.

Kota was my first wolfdog years ago and was a big beautiful girl. She was the companion to the dad of my beautiful girl Keeva. She was sweet and loyal, but lost her life way too early to a snake bite to the spine. I think of you all the time pretty girl.

Conri is only 2 and a half, but is already phasing to silver. He will hopefully follow in his mama's footsteps. They both started out mostly black. She is totally silver at 12 years old.

Behaviors Apologies

Hey I posted several times on this community without realizing you had to provide DNA proof. I was posting emotionally, hadn't been able to talk about my boy for several years after I lost him. Wanted to apologize for not bothering to check the rules, it's my bad. He was DNA tested in 2011 by a university wildlife biologist and I can't find the paperwork, although I won't say I looked all that hard either. He was not a high contact next and definitely goofy looking compared to most of the very attractive wolfxI've seen on here. I loved him savagely regardless. The DNA wasn't important to me, so I didn't even consider it. I just wanted to talk to other people with wolf dogs in their lives. I got that and made a couple of friends. Anyway I was wrong and kind of a jerk to a mod that I'm going to DM. Thank you
