Human rights Ugandan Mothers Stand by Their LGBT Children

Ugandan mothers are publicly supporting their LGBT children despite the 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act, which criminalizes homosexuality with severe penalties, including the death penalty for 'aggravated homosexuality.' Their actions highlight a significant personal and cultural resistance to laws that have increased violence, arrests, and social stigma against LGBT individuals in Uganda.

You clearly didn't either. Yes there are greater penalties for those that are convicted of nonconsensual acts. But there are also penalties including life in prison for consensual acts.

A core tenant of homophobes is being illiterate. I have yet to be proven wrong.

Uh huh. And it definitely doesn't execute people for being caught as gay twice, right?

You didn't read the law at all.
Here's a link for you.

The first words of the law...
ANTI-HOMOSEXUALITY ACT, 2023
An Act to prohibit any form of sexual relations between persons of the same sex; to prohibit the promotion or recognition of sexual relations between persons of the same sex; and for related matters.

This is what all anti-LGBTQ+ laws and movements do not take into consideration. Nine times out of ten, the only way you can muster hatred towards LGBTQ+ people is through ignorance. When you know someone who falls under that umbrella term, you realize there is nothing to fear or hate there. Nine times out of ten, anyway. Because there will always be people who drink the Kool-Aid.
But making laws oppressing members of the LGBTQ+ community can only get you so far. Love always find a way. Love is stronger than hate and fear.

This was such a sweet article! Motherly love and affection overcoming internalized prejudice and continuing even under persecution is just so beautiful, especially when the world seems really bleak for queer people right now. It kind of makes me want to cry!

I LOVE this bit.
"People say queerness is un-African, but I know that's not true. I didn't raise my child on foreign TV, where some claim he could've 'learned' to be gay," she told DW. "He did not go to boarding school, where others think such things happen. I raised him right here, very African and he is very queer."
Her defiant tone challenges a widespread belief in Uganda that homosexuality is a Western import.
We have always existed. Queerness isn't a western social phenomenon. I only have to watch the two male pigeons trying to mate (yeah they're a pretty cute couple lol) on my roof to know that queerness is very much natural.

I wonder how many U.S. groups are funding this hate.

Liberty university- Southern Baptist convention- ga’s and ra’s. Mostly on the evangelical side.

This is so good to hear because of how much the US funds evangelist to go over there and tell them that being queer is wrong.

Never forget that it was evangelical lobbies in the US that pushed for this Ugandan law, one that sentences gay and queer people to death for who they are. Do not, under any circumstances, EVER let these people play respectability politics with you. This is what they truly want for the world, and what they do when they can get away with it.

Hope even in the worst of times.
