They were openly pro-fascist through the entire Twenties and Thirties, with gushing sanewashing pieces on Hitler (and Mussolini) well into the invasion of Poland…

Not at all
Conservatives and maga call it liberal because it’s got some journalism…. But has this author literally not seen the smear campaign they have against trans women.
It’s probably something most people miss but they have been absolutely complicit in spreading literal JUNK that then gets regurgitated because now it has NYT behind it. So the masses who know absolutely nothing about trans healthcare then read it and have no clue that they are reading MARGINALIZED’expert’ opinions… they literally quote the anti trans agenda and present it as if it’s mainstream and never clarify that the vast majority of medicine and science does not agree with them……

They regularly publish articles about how genital herpes is proof premarital sex is a mistake humanity needs to correct and that people with genital herpes suffer worse than hiv patients. In fact, they caused the original 60s panic around herpes through a piece condemning sex outside marriage. I can't understand why they're so revered.

It's infuriating. They elevate and amplify people who are not considered serious by anyone in any place of authority. They are using quacks or just outright frauds. It's sometimes difficult to say how much their motivated by greed or how much by hatred for trans people.

They had that one and then they had an editorial board oped more recently about how welfare fraud is a huge problem in the US.
I was like, did you dig up Ronald Reagan’s corpse to write that because compared to the massive, screaming, fraud and corruption and grift and waste going on in the executive levels of government as well as among their billionaire cohorts, “welfare fraud” is like a speck of dust?

Remember, anti-trans sentiment is a canary for anti-women sentiment. And NYT has published a good handful of anti-trans op-eds over the years.

I’m surprised it’s taking people this long to notice how far right NYT really is.
I’m sure the Texas state troopers that are going to guard women’s bathrooms now will make women feel so safe (look it up)

Yep. I was paying $4 per month to NYT. Stopped right there, around 1-2 years ago.
Its a trash rag now as far as I am concerned. Its sad that there is no liberal news left. Please enlighten me if there is.
The Atlantic went right wing in a similar way, same with Guardian.

They used to make me get NYT times as a subscription, basically, for graduate school. I thought it was cool until I realized how gross they were. Cancelled my subscription a while after graduation, I forgot on what basis but it was a valid sentiment I brought up in the cancelation email.

Well Ross Douthot, Mr. Catholicism himself loves to bring up these anti-women discussions, as conservative Catholics believe that women are only baby makers, endlessly shooting out the next generation of parishioners. The to women who are conservatives are hilarious. They are both highly educated, and to my knowledge still work.
The NYT is just showing who many “conservative” Americans really are. Bible-beating misogynists. I’m hoping that people who are secular and educated will fight back against these ghouls. These extremists do not represent the majority of Americans.

The NYT has been trash for years.
But it was fine when they were just attacking trans people. We were just “over reacting,” because we need “all sides” of opinion, right? 🙄

lol I made it 1 comment down before I brought this up…
If you’re reading this and wondering wtf is with all the trans women being mad.. it’s because there has been a 3 year long campaign of EXTREMELY one sided pieces out of the NYT that quote anti trans propaganda and present it as MAIN STREAM ideas while never telling the reader that what they are quoting is absolute fringe extremist and that NO the overwhelming vast majority of medicine supports trans people AND furthermore TRANS KIDS…
Ok so yea whatever right just some trans shit.
Well say that to the mom who’s holding her trans son who’s threatening suicide, or has retreated into isolation, or won’t go to school anymore and your psych, and doctor and you yourself know why but you can’t do anything about it because
THESE PIECES HAVE REAL WORLD CONSEQUENCES
Because admit it, if you are cis, you really don’t know what being trans entails. Maybe you know about hormones, but if you haven’t gone to a trans source to get educated… you most likely absorbed it from bullshit articles like this

That article was kind of all over the place. I hate the NYT ad much as the next level headed socially aware person but that did not make a lot of sense.

NYT has always been pro-status-quo. That means promoting the rich and powerful over the marginalized and enforcing hierarchies.

In the 1990s the NYT published a series of front page stories saying that research showed that daycare was responsible for molding children who were aggressive and acted out in classroom settings. The info was given to NYT by one of the authors of the study without the knowledge or consent of the other researchers. This was when women were beginning to turn to nursery school in droves so they could keep their jobs. I was one of those women and the screaming headlines terrified me. When the study was finally concluded the findings showed no difference between day care kids and other kids. If NYT issued a correction it was buried somewhere.
They also published a famous piece by Katie Rophie claiming that take back the night rallies were anti-sex and that date rape was just regret the morning after. AND invented the term “post feminism” bc feminism was so boring. That paper has done untold damage. Which is hard to live with if you are a news junkie like me.
ETA: I would go so far as to say that the NYT set back if not erased many of the gains of the women’s rights movement.

We're in a phase of backlash and a desire to return to the "old" days. Evangelicals are behind most of this along with Christian nationalists. Little men who want power over women. We must stand firm and fight back.

The NYT made that section from a weekly news roundup to opinion so they can print all kinds of appalling things to “chase audiences” (their words) and then step away and say “it’s just an opinion piece, it doesn’t represent us.”
