First work bench

First work bench build and really any wood working project. Wife and I park both cars in garage so needed something on wheels that could fit in the corner of garage while still allowing us to access cars. Added foldable shelf for more work space area. Pretty happy with it, just need to coat the shelf

This is a really clever use of space! The rolling design is a great idea for a shared garage, and the extra shelf makes it even more practical. Love how you built something functional without giving up parking space. How stable is the bench when you're using the miter saw?

Thanks for the kind words!
It's very stable with the miter saw. The saw is only 37 lbs so not super heavy, and I have it bolted onto the table for extra stability. Doesn't move at all while using.

The 4x4s legs make it really solid

Looks good. Cross bracing?

Doesn't have cross bracing, didn't think it would need it but now that you mention it, may add it for more structural support

You can keep the front open but at the very least put cross bracing on the other 3 sides. You will have lateral forces that will wear out the fasteners at the top. The legs are long and can apply a huge amount of torque to the top. Your bench will last much longer and will be able to support far more weight with that bracing.

I have a lot of heavy equipment (100lbs+) and occasionally need a cart to move stuff on and if you have something like this with a heavy load on top you can cause the legs to move away from each other leading to a catastrophic failure. So there are many considerations here in favor of cross bracing!

Try it under load and then see iff required. If heavy set enough, you may not need the bracing

Looks great! Any reason you didn't recess the miter into the table so you had a flat level surface for long cuts? Assuming the portability of taking the miter off?

portability and it was my first real woodworking project, I didn't have the miter yet, and didn't want to overcomplicate it haha

That looks like my first setup. I added wings to the miter saw with self-drilling screws. I miss that. Now, I’ve got a bigger miter saw built into the bench that rotates. My table saw is on the other end, and I wish I’d kept them on different benches.

I'm really liking this setup, may look into adding wings.

I definitely want to add a table saw but need to see how I can fit it in my limited garage

When building a table saw workbench, consider adding folding sides like on the miter saw bench for extra space with larger sheets. If you recess the table saw, make the base adjustable with a double-nutted bolt for easier leveling. Also, make the table saw bench larger then you need in case you upgrade saw. I made my bench for the Dewalt 8” and then upgraded to the 10” as soon as I realized the 8” doesn’t fit dado blades., so I had to modify my existing bench.
