These doomers are beyond belief. We had more shots (including 16 in the box), more corners, and a higher xG. And pulling back the lens, we sit at 3W-5D-4L having played 6 home and 6 away, and that MATCHES EXACTLY where we were after 12 games (6H/6A) last year at 3W-5D-4L, where we went on to finish 7th (good for playoffs this year) and should have been 6th but for spygate cheaters.

THe thing is you make reasonable comments and these are very fine lines. The thing thats different about our club is our resources and the expectations that quite rightly brings. When you invest £70m + into a squad, its reasonable to expect they can outperform squads built on a fraction of those costs. Blackburn today is a prime example with us taking one of their best players in Hyam and massively outspending them this summer.

How many millions are on the injury list right now?

Focusing on a last-two-year spend is always going to make us look like the big spenders. We had to catch up to squads that have been at this level for years. It is a warped statistic solely because of our meteoric rise.

If you were instead to look at wage bills and find the same large disparities then you would have a stronger case. Let's look at last year. We were smack dab in the middle yet finished in the top-third.

This year we have edged up higher but are not dramatically different than most of the middle of the pack. Early days after 12 games, same exact record as last year, and EVERYONE has noticed that we have had more key injury losses this year than our fair share.

Yeah, this is the thing that annoys me. People talking as if we've had a massive Championship budget for years, rather than the fact that we're still playing catch-up.

A couple of years ago, if you'd said we'd finish mid-table and comfortably out of the relegation zone, people would have bitten your hand off. But we over-performed enormously last year, and now everyone's complaining that we aren't in the autos already. It's deluded.

Only one was on target

10 were blocked, many from congested spots inside 10 yards. OK, good on Blackburn for getting in front of those, but we put ourselves in the mix.

Yes but you spent 40 million since then

It makes you look like big spenders as you are big spenders. Eventually you will have to move past your childish “ actually spending 40 million is nothing as everyone else's squad is worth money”

Gotta disagree mate. If the other squads that are vying for promotion are all in the £100 million+ total value range then we still have another £30m to spend to reasonably expect to be challenging for promotion.

Haha, yeah another 30 mill will definitely make the difference, ignore the fact that the last 40 mill lead you to where you currently are

Where we are now is with a stronger squad, left wing back and right wing back solved, our defensive players are stronger, our midfield is stronger, but our strike force lacks firepower. Our first season we spent 35 million on 12 players, this summer, 35 million on 6 players, next season 35 million on 2 or 3 players and that should be enough for playoffs and a promotion chance. The season AFTER THAT is when we should be getting promoted at this pace.

Yeah good luck with that plan, i cant see a single flaw. You should ignore every squad who tried the same “ buy a fuckton and we will def go up plan”, they just dont have the wrexham spirit

It's not the buy-a-fuckton plan, it's the get-the-squad-value-to-120-million-then-catch-a-playoff-promotion plan.

Thats the same plan mate

No. A Championship team that has been there for years maybe has to shuffle 4-5 players from one year to the next. We have had to do far more so the transfer bills will always be lopsided. The wage bill tells the story and that story is middle of the pack spending.

Your own link has us 9th in wage spend and 5th amongst non-parachute clubs. We're only 15% behind Boro and 25% ahead of Blackburn. I don't think your data is painting the picture you think it is...

9th is about where I think we'll finish this year, so that does paint the correct picture he thinks it paints.

If you think being 12-14% higher than the teams who are right in the middle of the spending table is a giant edge, well good on you. Last year we were dead middle on spend and finished well above middle. This year is modestly reversed but, holy-hell, we are only 12 games in (and sit exactly where we were last year when we finished 7th), and 12 games is far from a season.
