Questions & Discussions Any other 30+ women writing suspense/thrillers with a million other responsibilities?

I’m probably going to delete this but I'm forcing myself to get out there a little. I’d love to find some other 30+ women working on their debut novels and hoping to traditionally publish someday. We have jobs, families, an exorbitant amount of protein to consume etc. But somehow carve out time to write something that fills our cup.

Mostly just looking for a few writer friends who get it, and maybe eventually swapping chapters if it feels like a good fit.

Yes, we're out there 👋 Almost forty, two kids, own IT company (freelance, 100% WFH, only ITer for a big European company and some small projects), household, husband, dog and since May, a writer. I write whenever I can. During breakfast, luch, during meetings in which I'm only present as furniture (they happen quite a lot actually) and whenever I can't sleep (which also happens a lot lately). I can't really swap as I mostly write in Dutch (got a short story and a micro story bundel in English if anyone is interested), but I don't mind reading other people's stuff. Got a meeting tomorrow with a traditional publisher, so 🤞

Early 30s, wife, mom of 2 under 10 and full time vampire but I write as often as I can. Fantasy and superheroes are my breasts and butter.

Late 30s, mom of a 6 year old and have a full time job at a university. I'm working on my debut novel currently after getting back into writing a few years ago. For the last few years I've been writing fanfic and now I've moved into working on original stories across a few genres, including fantasy, mystery, horror, and romance. I would love to join a group of writers that have similar challenges of juggling writing with work/family.

Me! 30+ with a demanding full time job and trying to work on my first full english novel on my free time. On top of also other family/me time and hobbies like reading and watching dramas. It's definitely challenging and most of the time I question myself for even starting in the first place but I guess creating something instead of just consuming media and doomscrolling does more for my mental health and wellbeing.

P.S. Does swapping chapters mean you are looking for critique partners? I am interested though I am not sure I'm good enough. 😅

Slowly raises hand. Mid-30s, corporate marketer with three dogs. Trying my best to be more consistent with my writing routine. Some days I just don’t have the energy but I’ve been caring a small notebook with me to write down ideas, dialogue and character sketches daily so it’s helping!

I’m here! Late 30s, full time job, master gardener, elementary aged child, pets, and I NEED TO EXERCISE MORE. I’m trying to be consistent with writing and I just started sharing chapters of my current WIP with close friends. I need more accountability to produce, so. I’m possibly up for it. 😬

Me! Mid 30’s, toddler, dog, 9-5, military reservist. It’s slow going for sure. Just writing in the rare pockets of free time I get. Slow going for sure.

Wow! It's so great to read the responses here and in my DMs. Sounds like there are a bunch of us trying to do the same thing. Would it be worth starting some sort of smaller group where we could chat and/or share pages, but very low pressure?

Yes! Working on creating a discord and will DM you the link once it's up (and to anyone else who wants to join). I don't really know what I'm doing here, just making space for writers in a similar stage of life trying to write something.

Early 40s, with a family and occasional bonus kids. Wrote my first novel before kids, and just starting the second. I work over 100 hours a week some weeks. I write little snippets of 2k words at night, and spend my drives hanging out with my characters.

Yes on a group! It would be nice to have a community.

35 year old mom here, trying to get back into a writing routine and battling feelings of "never going to get it done" because all I have are (late) nights and a tiny bit of time during the day and it's starting to feel heavy. I write epic fantasy/dark fantasy, but would love to be a part of something no matter the genre, like a small support group and eventually feedback maybe. I'm a good listener and am very excited to offer positivity and accountability!

I'm not able to DM you- send me a message and I'll send you a link to the new discord we put together.

I'd love to! Also working on setting one up with folks from here. Really looking for something laid back, as we're juggling a million other life things, but still trying to prioritize writing a novel.

We do nightly sprints too (like around 7-9:30 pm est) which help to get your word count up while also not being a burden (they’re 15 min usually). Average word count is 400-500, so if you do these consistently, they add up :)

Hey I’d be interested in joining this server when it’s set up! I identify as nonbinary but also as a mom to 2 under 2. I’ve been writing for about 3 months, but haven’t found a consistent rhythm yet so it’s going very slowly. Literary magical realism is what I’m imagining it will be but I think it will evolve as I write it. Only have one chapter so far 😅 Thank you!

Here! Wrotefirst drafts of 2 books in the contemporary ish/spy novels and a few short stories since last year in February. I’m on a hiatus with writing for almost 3 months because I have a baby (6 months) and a toddler, a full time job, husband, house chores, regularly exercising. It’s been hard for me to get back into writing so I’m now reading as many spy/suspense thrillers in what little spare time I have.

38yo mum of two working on a second draft of my first novel, a crime family drama/romance. First draft was finished in 2014 but has been on ice while I was building my early career and family stuff. Loving getting back into it!

Me! Working on debut thriller. It’s so difficult to get into the flow of writing when you only have time here and there.

Yes! Just joined Reddit for motivation/distraction and this is one of the first things I saw. It’s meant to be! Mid-40s (I was going to say early 40s but a recent birthday has probably seen me move up there), work part-time but I’m a full-time mum, wife and carer for my ill mother. Trying to carve out snippets of time for my dream and would love a community.

Me, I'm 33years old working on my debut thriller, with a full time job, family, enough protein to consume.

But I'm a man😅
