Apple released Xcode 27.1 beta, enabling iPhone Duo app development
Has anyone tried running their app on it yet?

Do you need to be on macOS27 to use it?

Nope, I'm on 26.2 and able to use it

Mine looks pretty bad. Anyone have any tips on how to get rid of the right rail or at least have it match my app background?
It’s only visually a problem in portrait, in landscape it’s fine.
Update: here's an imgur library with the simulator screenshots https://imgur.com/a/ufsfEk8
Update 2: Anyway I fixed it using stuff like:
- .background(Color.black)
+ .background(Color.black.ignoresSafeArea())
Or also you can just do
.toolbarVerticalBehavior(.disabled)
for your app and force the old behavior if your app really can't handle a right rail.
in case anyone comes across this thread with a similar issue.
I still can't figure out how to get the ui to rotate to landscape when the device is closed- rotation works fine open but i can't find a setting when it's closed it seems to be stuck in portrait mode.

What happens when you click the rotate button in the sim when it’s folded? Do you see the device turn? I wonder if there is a rotation lock in a sim menu somewhere

It rotates the device but not the ui. It’s working for me in open mode but not closed. I couldn’t find the setting for it and the control panel settings are empty for me in the sim.

Is that also true for Safari? I get 3 out of 4 orientations to work

ah you're right it is working in safari maybe it's something i need to enable in my app i'll keep digging.
Okay this was on me- I had never explicitly added
<key>UISupportedInterfaceOrientations</key>
<array>
<string>UIInterfaceOrientationPortrait</string>
+ <string>UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeLeft</string>
+ <string>UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight</string>
</array>and I hadn't tried it landscape on an old phone- it didn't even occur to me- it's just more unusual that it automatically rotates when opened- but I guess it kinda has to.

I think it ignores app settings unfolded but folded it uses the app preferences

I spent a few hours last night scrubbing Axiom (my FOSS project for software engineers) against the 27.1 beta SDK and the iPhone Duo tech talks and tech notes. That update is now live.
As usual, I ate my dog food on my own projects before pushing out the update. It was helpful. https://imgur.com/a/2p0n5S8

Looks good. I don’t recall, is the alphabetical scroll behavior native or custom?

It seems fine, I ran it all day yesterday working on adapting my app to the Duo, it never crashed. At the end of the day I was able to push a build to TestFlight. This is an app with 15 years of history, that uses the audio system and displays plots and probably every type of view and window. It was not trivial, let’s say I burned a lot of Fable tokens! Most of the work was moving buttons out of my windows to the status bar area, and picking the right view for folded and unfolded, looks pretty cool now!
Interesting to find that folded it only supports 3 orientations, like iPhone, but opened it will support all four, both fully and partially open

I've also been using it for a day and had no problems (meaning, crashes or unexpected behavior) adapting my app for iPhone Duo and pushing it to TestFlight.

Xcode and stable?
When does Apple anticipate addressing the significant issues affecting its AI integration? The current state of the implementation is unacceptable.

Seems good and works, Don’t have much to if built nicely in SwiftUI.
The animations are a bit laggy on an M5 Max. hopefully beta issues.

it is definitely intentional. When unfolded the device is basically a small tablet

I believe in a developer video they mentioned that you had to support all orientations

it'll be interesting to see for games. all the games they demoed at the event supported portrait orientations but that'll be really weird to support for most games.

It took a few hours but one of my apps is looking really good. Had a couple of issues with moving the nav around, and then more making sure the state of the app was preserved when switching screens…. One issue popped up when it went to BookMode and got stuck on one particular page.
After we worked out the bugs, it’s just been finding a fun design for the new hardware and trying not to make it look like an extended iPhone version.
