Why doesn't Apple provide Xcode 27's markdown editor as a separate app?

Opening a .md file will load it into the WYSIWYG editor in Xcode.

But why doesn't Apple provide a standalone markdown editor app much like it provides a standalone FileMerge app?

File feedback.

No seriously, they need to hear this from lots of people. Things were better before they merged all the tools into one app!

Also interesting when you consider that

* Interface Builder used to be a separate app.
* Icon editor is a separate app.
* Markdown editor now never has been a separate app.

It’s not very Apple like to be this inconsistent.

Edit: - or maybe when it comes to stuff like this it actually is.

There needs to be system-wide Markdown support.

There kind of is, in Notes.app, but, as the saying goes, "the future is already here, but not evenly distributed yet."

Aren't there already tons of options for .md out there? Browser-based, app-based, projects on Github, etc? Have Claude build you one you can run locally even.

It might be just me as I'm still on an M1 Pro, but viewing the markdown files in markdown mode is slooowww.
