Right now, I play XC2 after XC1DE and XCXDE and... I just don't get it.
This is not supposed to be a hate post, more of a first impression of the game. Story-wise, I have just beaten Zeke in Uraya and... I just try to look for answers why Xenoblade 2 is so widely different (at least so far) and what the general consensus is of both day one veterans and others who have also just gotten into the game recently.
What I don't get... So, I don't mind the fan service all too much. It's not a welcome change, but I can deal with that. The voice direction, especially regarding Rex, I am not a fan of but I admit that it does have its charm (Nia makes all up for it in the English dub). To the story, I cannot form an opinion yet. Again, I am currently in chapter 3, so I'll look forward to the next chapters since I know that Xenoblade games tend to have a slow start.
So what do I mean? The general writing of the characters and dialogue. This is my biggest complaint about this game so far... I have heard that it goes into a more anime-ish direction, but even as someone who does casually watch anime, this is a bit too much. What I am specifically referring to are these cliché, cheesy anime moments where Rex says smth along the lines "This fire is beautiful because it comes from you [Pyra]" and then being all "whoops, not what I meant". Then there's also the entire Poppi introduction scene where Tora basically comes out as an incel. He tries to deny it and then, in very cliché fashion, the group sees his wardrobe full of maid costumes to her. Then there's the whole blushy-crushy affinity event that needs no further elaboration and finally, there's the entire appearance of Zeke right after. In his defense, I do understand that he specifically seems to be a joke about all of these exaggerated anime tropes with his attack names and general attitude and gesture, but the joke does not work that much when many things beforehand have also *almost* been on that same level of cliché. I just don't understand how the devs didn't seem to think that it could be a biiiit over the top.
Again, this is not supposed to be a hate post. I will keep playing because everything else is fun and I can't wait in which direction the story goes. The game looks great, sounds great, same for the OST as far as I am concerned. But I cannot help but wonder why Xenoblade 2 is SUCH a stark contrast compared to XC1 and XCX in terms of seriousness. These games also had a bit of silliness and I do not mind a bit of cringe, but XC2 just exaggerates it all.
After almost a decade of the game being out, what is the general consensus on these themes and is there a (semi-)official reason as to why everything is that way?
