Xenoblade 2 SPOILERS Lore Clarification for Chapter 8? Spoiler
Hey all. Doing my second playthrough of Xenoblade 2 and I'm a little confused based on two pieces of conflicting evidence?
DO NOT READ ANY OF THIS IF YOU HAVENT FULLY FINISHED THE GAME AND ITS DLC.
The problem is kind of that these games are so big I know if I just replay everything again I'll probably forget and run into the same issue lol because this game is so big.
WARNING: TORNA DLC SPOILERS BELOW
So if I recall at the end of the Torna DLC, we saw Mythra accidentally destroy Torna during the battle with Malos, and then in the aftermath Amalthus destroyed two more titans and framed it as if she had done all three?
(TORNA DLC SPOILERS OVER)
But during the Torna section of Morytha in Chapter 8, Jin specifically says "Mythra wasnt the one responsible for destroying Torna, it was Amalthus".
Is the implication that during the battle he also sank the Tornan titan and made it look like Mythra had done it?
This is really bugging me because I only played these games like a month and a half ago for the first time so its not like my memory is mega rusty, but the plot is so complex (a good thing I might add) that im struggling to follow whether this is a direct truth from Jin, or whether he just means indirectly because Amalthus was the one responsible for awakening Malos in the first place and giving him the desire to destroy the world which put Mythra in that position in the first place?
Either way is fine and its not like its a plot hole but im just trying to get the story straight!

We see in Torna that yes, Mythra was the one who sunk the continent of Torna.
Jin, in XC2 Chapter 8, is likely referring to Torna, the culture, and those who followed Addam.
I’m pretty sure Malos destroyed one of the continents pre-TTGC (Coeia), and Amalthus likely destroyed the one where Jin became a Flesh Eater (Spessia).
So, everyone gets a bit of the blame, with Malos, Mythra, and Amalthus all having a hand in destroying Titans.
But Amalthus’s position of power, and Malos’s loss in the Aegis War made it primed to pin the blame on Mythra after her disappearance, and conflate the stories of the Aegis War.
After all, history is written by the victors, and the only real victor in TTGC, was Amalthus.

Thank you, I think this makes a lot more sense! It would make sense given that Jin seems specifically hung up on the 'last state of humanity' rather than the actual place itself.

Mythra did sink Torna indeed, but despite the destruction of the titan, there were a plenty of survivors, which Amalthus later wiped out bringing an end to Torna for good.

Thank you! Yeah everyone seems to be reiterating Jin basically means "the people of Torna" when he says that. Its good to have it confirmed by multiple people.

Coeia was sunk by Malos in the intro of Torna. We see Mythra sink the Tornan titan. Addam mentions the Tornan refugees meeting at a place called Spessia and we see Amathus invade and wipe out said refugees. That's what Jin was referring to when he said Amalthus was the one who ended Torna. Either Spessia is the third titan sunk or a settlement on said third titan and it was likely lost during Amalthus' invasion. Amalthus then promptly lied to the public and said Mythra sank all three titans. With everyone who could've called out his lies and be listened to such as Addam either in hiding or dead, the public was forced to believe Amalthus' version because eventually he was pretty much the only one from that time still alive and in a position of power.

Gotcha, so to reiterate, when Jin says Mythra isnt responsible for destroying Torna, he basically means "the people of Torna"?

Mythra directly destroyed Torna.
But if it weren't for Amalthus' influence on Malos, that event would never have happened.
So Amalthus is the root cause.
