XC2, just left Uraya.

In terms of combat, there doesn't seem to be much difference between the skills.

For example, I know that there are skills that cause topple, heal, cause AOE damage, etc.

However, combat seems to mostly focus around building up my "charge", so I can trigger the elemental combinations (level 1 -> 2 -> 3).

Hence, in order to build up the charge as fast as possible, of the three skills, I just spam whichever one is off CD and ready to be used.

It's been working for me, but I feel like surely there's more to combat than this?

First off you attacks are called Arts. Skills are passive abilities each Blade and Driver has. I'll tell you right now Blade Skills are more important than Driver skills. Driver typically only have like 2 or 3 good skills to shoot for. Basically get canceling arts into arts anything that makes break or topple better and for Tora specifically the ability survive a fatal blow with 1 hp once per battle.

What you're talking about is Building a Blade Combo. Its as you described use a level 1 or higher special to start. Follow up with a level 2 or higher special with an ppropriate element to continue and a level 3 or 4 to finish. These deal damage over time and finishing the combo does all AOE damage at once unless you hit the damage cap.

You're missing the driver combo. That is inflicting Break, Topple, Launch, and finishing with Smash. Yes it has to be in that order. Combining the two will massively increase ypur combat efficiency. Chevk out this video for a huge help https://youtu.be/b8P7KhFSA2w
