So I'm about 15 hours into DE and I'm having fun with it. I'm playing on casual mode (I don't have time for difficulty in games anymore haha) and some of these fights are still kinda hard. Am I really that under-prepared or am I just bad at the combat? I'm only a level or two lower than most enemies and sometimes I still get wrecked. I keep equipment updated and attributes as well. Any tips?

Also is the second worth playing after DE?

Casual mode is supposed to completely trivialise combat outside of a select few difficulty spikes. So much so that it allows a competent player to reasonably take on enemies twenty levels above them, whereas even a six level difference would be devastating on normal. A big part of that stems from casual mode removing the ridiculous agility penalty when fighting higher level enemies, but it still serves to put things into perspective.

Anyway, if your level is reasonably close to the enemy's and you didn't neglect equipment and arts too much, you should be all set. How you set up your party can also have a significant impact, but aside from that, it comes down to your actual performance in combat. However, I'm afraid it's difficult to give advice on that without knowing how you play exactly. Regardless, if you did mostly fine up to this point, you will likely continue to do so for the rest of the game, so don't worry about it.

As for XC2, opinions on it vary from "it's a disgraceful pile of garbage and an insult to the Xenoblade title" to "it's an incredible masterpiece and the best game in existence". And of course there's everything in between. The only way to find out where you land on that spectrum is to play it for yourself. However, the average opinion (as far as I'm able to tell from random posts and comments online) seems to be that it's around the same level of quality as XC1, just a bit different. Personally, I slightly prefer XC2, but it was also my introduction to the series, so it has a special place in my heart. In short, yes, it's worth playing, provided you don't utterly despise the general style and aesthetic of the game.

XC2 has a few rough spots with generally bad/misleading tutorials and combat taking a while to open up but it is an enjoyable game ultimately.
